- Chapter 29 - Dog Hearted With A Human Face
Just like ten years ago.
Ten years ago, Lin Xunye was seventeen, in the first semester of his senior year in high school. He secretly signed up for an arts entrance exam without telling his family. Nobody knew about it until a week before the exam.
But the day before the exam, because of Lin Xunye’s carelessness, Lin Youjia found out.
At that time, Lin Youjia held the exam admission ticket he had taken from Lin Xunye’s room and threatened him: if he didn’t do as told, the ticket would be torn up.
Lin Xunye didn’t have a backup of the admission ticket file. To save money, he only printed this one copy.
Lin Xunye was very young then; all his time was spent studying. The overwhelming pressure squeezed him, and the tension inside him snapped instantly. He couldn’t think of any solution other than pleading with Lin Youjia.
So, Lin Xunye agreed.
Lin Youjia took him to a dark alley near the school and lied that he had a puppy that accidentally ran deep into the alley.
If Lin Xunye could go in and bring the puppy out, Lin Youjia would return the admission ticket.
The alley was very deep and dark.
At first, Lin Xunye didn’t believe Lin Youjia.
But when barking was really heard inside the alley, Lin Xunye clenched his teeth and entered.
However, there was no puppy in the alley, only three of the school’s most notorious thugs and a phone playing dog sounds.
That day, Lin Xunye fought three against one.
When he came out of the alley, Lin Xunye’s face and clothes were stained with bl00d, and his hand had a long cut, leaving Lin Youjia stunned.
The phone playing the dog sounds was smashed onto Lin Youjia’s body, followed by a punch from Lin Xunye.
It was also that day Lin Xunye realized that blindly enduring was useless; the only thing that truly intimidates bullies is a fist.
When the unlit cigarette was thrown into the trash can, Lin Xunye witnessed Lin Youjia being taken away by the police.
The female omega had spoken up a few words for Lin Youjia at first, but her injuries were real, and she was also taken to the police station.
One of the bodyguards stood at the back, making a call. Lin Xunye hid in the crowd and watched everything thoroughly.
He could already predict how furious Lin Gaoyuan would be, maybe even call him to ask why he treated Lin Youjia like that.
But Lin Xunye didn’t care about all that.
Sure enough, that night, Lin Xunye received a call from Lin Gaoyuan.
Lin Gaoyuan raised his voice on the phone, complaining endlessly, repeating a few questions that Lin Xunye could recite by heart.
Lin Xunye didn’t put the call on speaker, but thoughtfully connected his phone to Bluetooth so Lin Gaoyuan could talk all he wanted.
Meanwhile, Lin Xunye was figuring out how to bathe a kitten.
Gu Pei was sitting beside him wearing a low cut top, occasionally glancing at him, then withdrawing his gaze whenever Lin Xunye looked back.
After a few repetitions, Lin Xunye stopped what he was doing.
He patted his hands, stood up, walked over, pinched together two fingers, and took the file from Gu Pei’s hand. “If you have something to say, just say it. Don’t be so awkward like a little girl.”
Gu Pei took the chance to wrap his hand around Lin Xunye’s waist, “You didn’t finish explaining why you were busy this afternoon.”
Gu Pei’s reminder made Lin Xunye remember.
His eyelids twitched as he forced himself to recall the blue haired man’s features, then said, “Help me find someone.”
Gu Pei’s heart jumped; he had a bad feeling.
The next moment, Lin Xunye said, “Blue hair, a mole on the side of the nose, pretty decent features. Oh, and he’s an alpha with an orange-scented pheromone,”
After finishing, he looked at Gu Pei and added, “About your height.”
Seeing no reaction, Lin Xunye waved his hand in front of him, “Okay?”
Gu Pei’s eyes darkened compared to before. Lin Xunye saw his reflection in Gu Pei’s pupils and raised his eyebrows.
Pretty handsome.
After a long moment, Gu Pei’s hoarse voice asked, “The reason.”
Lin Xunye: “What?”
Gu Pei: “The reason for finding him.”
Lin Xunye gave him a confused look, not understanding why Gu Pei was so talkative today. He rubbed his hair and turned around, “If you can help, then help. If not, forget it.”
Sure enough, Gu Pei wasn’t a good guy either.
Heart of a dog, face of a man.
Back in his room, Lin Xunye collapsed onto his warm and comfortable big bed.
It was summer, but Lin Xunye covered himself with a thick quilt.
Just like how he liked to bury his face entirely in the sink to tell himself he was still alive, the heavy quilt pressing on his body gave him a sense of reality.
Though sweating was an unavoidable problem.
But Lin Xunye showered twice a day, so this was a minor issue.
When Lin Xunye went upstairs, he didn’t take his phone with him. So when the door was knocked, his first reaction was to look for his phone.
But he couldn’t find it.
So Lin Xunye had no choice but to open the door with his messy bedhead.
Gu Pei stood there fully dressed, holding Lin Xunye’s phone.
Lin Xunye yawned, sleepy and displeased, “What is it?”
He didn’t even open his eyes.
Gu Pei handed the phone over.
The cold phone screen pressed against Lin Xunye’s cheek, making him shiver and open his eyes to glare at Gu Pei.
Gu Pei said, “The person you asked me to find last night, I’ll help you.”
Lin Xunye’s brain froze, blankly asking, “Who?”
The answer was Gu Pei’s footsteps going downstairs.
Seconds later, Lin Xunye’s memory returned, recalling the conversation with Gu Pei the night before.
His mood lifted slightly. He closed the door and lay back in bed, forcing himself to close his eyes and continue dreaming.
When the even, long breaths started, Lin Xunye fell back into a dream.
This time, Lin Xunye was back in a lavender field.
Smelling the familiar scent, Lin Xunye felt a sense of home.
He stood still waiting for a while, but the boy didn’t appear.
Only after the sun set did the boy run from afar.
He held a bunch of sunflowers and stood beside Lin Xunye, hooking their pinkies gently.
The blue ribbon tied the three sunflowers together, looking like a bridal bouquet.
Lin Xunye looked at the boy, who looked back.
Suddenly, the boy said, “Brother, let’s get married.”
The breeze blew through the never-closed small window, moving a few strands of silver hair on the bed.
Then a fluffy head poked out from under the quilt.
Lin Xunye covered his head and shuffled to the washbasin to squeeze toothpaste.
“Brother, let’s get married.” This phrase felt like a spell, lingering in his mind.
His hands trembled as he finished brushing his teeth and buried his head in the sink as usual, but this time he felt a slight headache and a sore throat.
But Lin Xunye ignored it and quickly got ready to leave.
He woke up very late; it was now rush hour, and the roads were congested.
The taxi stopped and started, and Lin Xunye stared out the window.
His phone rang twice: one was from Gu Pei, the other from Li Ye. Lin Xunye didn’t open either.
His mood was complicated.
The dream he could never remember clearly, the confession he couldn’t forget, repeatedly striking his nerves, like a treasure buried long ago. Lin Xunye didn’t know the code but vaguely guessed it.
Everything was blurry.
Only the confession was clear.
So annoying.
Suddenly, Lin Xunye remembered Gu Pei standing beside him outside the banquet hall, his tone firm and every word serious, “You are my omega.”
Lin Xunye rubbed his temples, feeling even more confused.
The road ahead was more and more congested until it stopped completely.
The taxi driver glanced at Lin Xunye’s silver hair through the rearview mirror, hesitated for two seconds, and said, “Young man, are you in a hurry? There seems to be an accident up ahead, causing the traffic jam.”
Lin Xunye shook his head lightly and pressed his fingers to his temples, massaging slowly.
The driver said “oh oh” and turned his attention back to the road.
Silence returned in the car.
Half an hour later, Lin Xunye rolled down the window, stretched his head out, and looked at a blurry figure in the distance that looked like Gu Pei.
But Gu Pei wasn’t wearing those clothes this morning.
Lin Xunye withdrew his head, bored, scrolling through his phone and occasionally messaging Li Ye, telling him where he was.
The driver was so startled by Lin Xunye that he broke out in cold sweat, thinking Lin Xunye was about to jump out the window. He immediately said, “Young man, you’re still young, don’t think about giving up.”
Lin Xunye looked up blankly, frowning deeply. He wanted to say he had no such thoughts, but realizing it might sound bad, he changed his words to: “No, I just saw someone I know.”
Lin Xunye didn’t lie; he really thought he saw someone familiar just now.
Maybe frightened by Lin Xunye, the driver kept spouting intermittent motivational speeches.
Lin Xunye, after hearing so much, went from trying to argue to gradually understanding. Seeing his change, the driver was very happy.
Until Lin Xunye got off, he could still hear the driver shouting “Keep going!”
Very awkward.
When Lin Xunye arrived at the institution, Li Ye was still eating.
Lin Xunye sat in the corner of the sofa and opened a game app, about to start a round.
Li Ye pushed a lunch box to him, “Try our new lunch box; I specially saved it for you.”
Lin Xunye looked at the tiny water droplets steamed inside the lunch box and had no appetite. “No thanks, you eat it.”
Li Ye ignored him and kept eating.
Lin Xunye finished a game round; Li Ye finished eating.
He wiped his mouth and asked Lin Xunye, “Are you sure you want to come help at the institution?”
Lin Xunye said yes and opened the lunch box, eating.
Once the food touched his stomach, he felt nausea.
Li Ye sighed seeing his state.
Lin Xunye’s lethargy almost floated onto him.
“When you start working here, don’t expect a high salary even though you’re a boss.”
Lin Xunye finished the food in two or three bites, twisted open a bottle of water, took a sip, and suppressed the nausea.
Then he stood and spun around in front of Li Ye, stopping at the door, “I’m off.”
Li Ye found this amusing and pushed him back onto the sofa by his arm.
“Come to work tomorrow, remember not to be too harsh, or you might get complaints.”
When Lin Xunye first taught at the institution, parents complained because of his red hair and exaggerated earrings.
They said he was corrupting morals, had no artistic talent, only artistic illness.
The insults were harsh, but Lin Xunye didn’t respond.
After the parents vented, he said simply, “Left turn, refund.”
That parent never asked for a refund, because Lin Xunye promised to help their child win an award in one month. If not, he would pay back the full fee out of his own pocket.
With that promise, the parent gave him one month.
One month later, the student really won an award.
But Li Ye didn’t approve of Lin Xunye’s method.
Competitions had too much luck and subjectivity. If a judge just didn’t like a certain style, even the best work might be rejected.
And reaching that level requires huge mental effort and heavy pressure.
Lin Xunye knew this clearly, but he still chose to gamble.
