The Unmarried Omega Falls into Being a Wife - Chapter 8
Lin Xunye withdrew his gaze, catching a glimpse of Gu Pei’s flawless nose from the corner of his eye. Through gritted teeth, he said, “Fine.”
People with moles on their noses are bad news; those without are even worse.
With that confirmation, Gu Pei turned his head and said politely, “We can start taking the photo now.”
The staff looked at the two people suddenly leaning close in the camera and figured this young couple had probably been arguing. Luckily, they’d hesitated long enough not to call the police.
Click! The photo was taken.
The moment Lin Xunye received the photo, his vision blurred for a second. A vast lavender field appeared out of nowhere, its scent enveloping him. But it wasn’t purely lavender there was a faint hint of citrus mixed in…
He shook his head, and the vision faded but the smell didn’t.
The citrus scent was still there.
Lin Xunye whipped his head toward Gu Pei. The other man looked calm and composed, even handed him an orange candy. Lin Xunye remained wary, his gaze fixed sharply on the candy in Gu Pei’s palm, his mind racing with possibilities.
But everything was interrupted by the crisp sound of a tangerine being peeled.
Seeing the staff member peel the orange, Lin Xunye’s probing gaze immediately softened.
He was overthinking it. Gu Pei was so upright and rigid the number of times he’d ever been drunk probably could be counted on one hand. Even if he’d been to New Zealand, it would’ve been for business, not messing around like him. They wouldn’t have crossed paths.
Still…
Lin Xunye narrowed his eyes and pulled out his phone to file a complaint against the staff eating snacks on duty.
After the photo, the next step was getting the marriage certificate.
Lin Xunye wasn’t looking forward to it, but the stern attitude of the government staff made even him take things a little more seriously.
After reading the document carefully, he turned his head only to find himself caught in Gu Pei’s gaze. Gu Pei looked at him with a faint smile, his deep blue eyes like an endless ocean.
Lin Xunye boldly met his gaze and gave him a clenched fist in return.
After being tricked by Gu Pei once, he now couldn’t resist reading any black printed text that appeared in front of him.
Once the forms were signed and the fingerprints done, Lin Xunye rejected the ceremony offered by the civil affairs bureau and took the certificate, heading straight out.
From behind him came the staff’s voice: “Congratulations on your marriage.”
But all Lin Xunye heard was: “A pig drinks cold water.”
He had no intention of standing like a monkey in front of empty chairs, reciting fake vows of eternal love.
Walking out of the civil affairs bureau, Lin Xunye finally relaxed completely.
The air outside was great. Fresh and clean.
“Where to? I’ll take you,” Gu Pei followed right behind, sounding very considerate.
Lin Xunye: Great, the mood killer’s here.
He reached back for his cap, grabbed at nothing, paused, then lowered his hand. “No need, I’ve got a phone. I can call a ride.”
Gu Pei said, “It’s rush hour. Hard to get one now.”
Lin Xunye laughed twice seemingly looking up at the sky, but actually weighing the truth of Gu Pei’s words.
Suddenly, a newlywed couple started arguing on the roadside.
“I told you we should’ve bought a car earlier, but you insisted on waiting until after we got the certificate. Now look we can’t even find a ride to go home!”
“You’re just mad my mom didn’t agree to buy a house and pay a bride price before we registered! My mom said, once we’re married, she’ll take care of it the dowry, the car, and house. Don’t worry, I’ll get them for you.”
The omega rolled their eyes, furious: “Your mom says, your mom says it’s always your mom! If it weren’t for my mom insisting you were a good person, I’d have rather hanged myself than marry you!”
“And don’t act like you’re doing me a favor. It was our money, and I wanted to buy you a car. You refused and insisted on choosing one yourself. Three months and still nothing. Tell me the truth did you spend the money?”
The alpha stammered, “N-no! I was investing! It just hasn’t paid off yet!”
Seeing the omega raise their hand to hit him, the alpha quickly stepped back nearly bumping into Lin Xunye.
Gu Pei reached out in time and pulled Lin Xunye behind him.
Lin Xunye peeked from behind him, still watching the arguing couple.
At first, he wanted to help, but it was their own business and with how angry the omega was, stepping in might just earn him a scolding.
“Oh, so you gambled again?! I must’ve been blind to marry you.” The omega wiped their tears, grabbed the alpha by the collar, and stormed back into the civil affairs office. “We’re getting divorced. Now!”
From a distance, Lin Xunye could still hear the alpha arguing, “It’s investment! Investment! Don’t you understand?!”
After watching the drama unfold, Lin Xunye clicked his tongue. “Figures. All alphas are jerks.”
Gu Pei: “Hm?”
Lin Xunye looked up and met the amusement in Gu Pei’s eyes. With a glare, he turned away. He almost forgot standing in front of him was the king of jerks.
“Still want that ride? Divorce on the day of the certificate counts as breach of contract, remember.”
Lin Xunye: Ha.
He was wrong. This wasn’t a jerk. This was a fighter jet among jerks.
The sun hung high in the sky, the heat increasing. Lin Xunye looked at it, then looked at Gu Pei.
He could still hear the arguing couple’s words in his ears or rather, the now ex-couple’s.
With a sigh, Lin Xunye walked to the parking lot like a reluctant bride forced into a decision. “Fine. You can take me.”
Gu Pei got in the car. Lin Xunye added, “It’s not like I want to ride with you. You’re just here, so I’m being gracious, that’s all.”
He emphasized the word graciously, as if proving a point.
Gu Pei was tempted to say, “Then get out.”
But he didn’t.
Because with Lin Xunye’s personality, if he did say that, the next second a full powered slap would land right across his face.
Gu Pei’s driving skills were, as always, excellent.
Though Lin Xunye had only ridden with him twice, he was sure if the Gu Corporation ever went bankrupt, Gu Pei could rise again as a ride-hailing driver.
Halfway through the drive, Lin Xunye’s phone rang.
He didn’t answer, waiting for the caller to give up or get impatient.
All he wanted now was peace from everyone, including Gu Pei.
Unfortunately, as soon as his phone stopped ringing, Gu Pei’s private phone started.
He had two phones one for work, one personal.
It was the personal one ringing.
Gu Pei was driving and couldn’t answer, so he said, “Help me out, wife.”
Lin Xunye gave a loud, displeased hmph and took the phone while snapping, “Don’t call me that. We haven’t even decided who’s the wife yet.”
As soon as he said it, a string in his brain snapped.
Was he insane?
Arguing with Gu Pei about who was the wife?
Teeth clenched, Lin Xunye glared at the smug look in Gu Pei’s eyes.
This damn guy, taking advantage of him again. As soon as they got out of the car, he was turning this man into hamburger meat.
The phone was still ringing. Lin Xunye answered it.
His father’s overly polite voice filled the narrow space: “President Gu? Is Xiao Ye with you? I just tried calling him, but he didn’t answer. I was worried something happened, so I called you instead. Hope I’m not bothering you?”
Lin Xunye sneered. Worried he had an accident? Or worried he ran off and skipped the wedding?
Because of Gu Pei, his father hadn’t sent anyone to watch him over the past month. Now this call probably meant he couldn’t sit still anymore ready to collect his benefits.
At a red light, Gu Pei stopped the car. He didn’t take the phone back. Instead, he leaned in toward Lin Xunye’s hand.
“Ah Ye is doing great. We’ve already registered the marriage,” Gu Pei said.
As he spoke, his cool, handsome features relaxed. His upturned eyelids flickered, his eyes reflecting nothing but Lin Xunye’s figure.
If they weren’t in a fake marriage, Lin Xunye might have thought Gu Pei really liked him.
After that, Lin’s father’s voice turned even more eager, his tone practically dripping with flattery. “Good, good! Getting married is the best thing for Xiao Ye fulfilling what an omega should do…”
“Mr. Lin,” Gu Pei cut him off.
“You’re a senior, and I respect that. But I really can’t agree with your views. No matter the gender, no one should be discriminated against and besides, Ah Ye is excellent. Marriage isn’t the only way to prove his worth.”
“He has unlimited potential. He should carve out his own future, not be reduced to someone who has to marry well to find value.”
Even as he finished speaking, Gu Pei’s eyes never left Lin Xunye.
In his chest, Lin Xunye’s ever loyal heart gave a few messy thumps which he forcefully suppressed.
Gu Pei was a dangerous man. No wonder there were always so many rumors about him.
Lin’s father was silenced. After muttering a few blessings, he awkwardly hung up.
The red light turned green. Gu Pei calmly returned to his seat, spine straight, as if the powerful speech he just gave hadn’t shaken Lin Xunye to his core.
The car moved again. Lin Xunye switched off the phone and stuffed it into the br3ast pocket of Gu Pei’s suit.
The pocket was shallow. The phone stuck out awkwardly, swaying with Gu Pei’s movements as if greeting him.
Gu Pei’s words kept looping in Lin Xunye’s mind. He blinked, his eyes slightly red at the corners.
Noticing the intense gaze, Gu Pei spoke: “If you want to check my phone, go ahead. No password on the apps. You can look at anything.”
Lin Xunye: “…”
“I’m not checking your phone!” He turned away, arms crossed, eyes fixed forward.
Then he added, “Narcissist.”
Lin Xunye looked fierce but wasn’t intimidating at all. Yet he still thought he was terrifying.
The car stopped.
Gu Pei handed him the phone. “Sure you don’t want to look?”
Lin Xunye glanced at it but stayed put, refusing to speak. His whole demeanor screamed stay away.
But Gu Pei had no plans to give him space.
He unlocked the phone, placed it on Lin Xunye’s lap, and leaned back in his seat with his eyes closed to rest.
Lin Xunye sat stiffly for five minutes, his gaze flickering to Gu Pei’s profile. When he was sure the man wouldn’t open his eyes, he slowly, sneakily picked up the phone starting with WeChat.
Pfft. As if he wasn’t going to check.
“Is it interesting?”
