- Chapter 12 - "Or, Shall I Help You, Master?"
“Shall this humble servant assist you?”…
Yun Chuanzhi retracted her earlier thought about Bai Fenghuo’s good fortune. She never imagined that the Kun Dan Sect, which appeared so luxurious and serene, was actually a dragon’s pool and tiger’s lair, where even a lowly Immortal Servant under Bai Fenghuo harbored treacherous intentions.
“Are you… are you alright?” Yun Chuanzhi asked, looking at Bai Fenghuo. Uncertain whether to offer support or not, she could only hover her hand in mid-air.
Joyous Union Powder was a somewhat notorious aphrodisiac in the cultivation world, but it was only effective against cultivators with low cultivation levels. Someone like Bai Fenghuo, with her advanced cultivation, shouldn’t have been easily affected.
Yet her increasingly flushed complexion and increasingly hazy gaze clearly indicated that the drug was taking effect.
As if sensing her thoughts, Bai Fenghuo murmured, “This venerable one was careless. Though I recognized the Joyous Union Powder, I assumed my cultivation would render it harmless, so I drank it.”
“But I forgot that my old illness had recently relapsed, leaving my body weakened. Even with spiritual energy, I can’t dispel it.”
Her voice sounded strange, as if coming from her nasal cavity, the soft, breathy tone almost a gasp. Her hands, frantic and desperate, collided with Yun Chuanzhi’s palms, her fingers entwining with his, burning hot.
Yun Chuanzhi was so startled by her sudden intimacy that she nearly leapt away. However, remembering her duty as her personal Immortal Servant, she gritted her teeth and endured.
“I… you… I’ll go fetch Ling Shui,” Yun Chuanzhi said, turning to leave. But Bai Fenghuo’s grip was too strong; she couldn’t even take a step before being yanked back to her original spot.
“Why call her?” Bai Fenghuo’s voice was soft as water, seeping into Yun Chuanzhi’s heart like a gentle stream. Yet a cold smile flickered across her face. “Do you still imagine someone can cure me of this Joyous Union Powder?”
Then what else am I supposed to do? Sleep with you? Yun Chuanzhi thought, but naturally dared not voice the thought aloud.
“Stop dreaming,” Bai Fenghuo murmured, her voice trembling despite her efforts to control it. “Every single one of them wants to kill me.”
“As you can see, scenes like this happen almost every few days,” Bai Fenghuo continued, her body sliding down the table to collapse on the floor like water-soaked rice paper, drenched in sweat.
Yun Chuanzhi was stunned. “So many?”
Just how many despicable acts has Bai Fenghuo committed to offend so many people?
“Mm,” Bai Fenghuo murmured, weakly clasping Yun Chuanzhi’s hand. “As I told you yesterday, I’ve never trusted anyone.”
“I simply didn’t have time to deal with you before falling into their trap.” She forced a smile. “You got your way.”
“Got my way with what?” Yun Chuanzhi frowned, crouching down to meet Bai Fenghuo’s gaze. She tilted her head, studying her eyes.
Bai Fenghuo paused, then asked, “You won’t kill me?”
I really want to, Yun Chuanzhi thought, averting her gaze. If Bai Fenghuo hadn’t said those words, she would have killed her without hesitation.
But hearing that everyone in the sect wanted her life stirred a sudden pang of sympathy within her.
Yun Chuanzhi had never considered herself soft-hearted. Normally, she would cut down those who wronged her like chopping cabbage, her hand never trembling.
Yet she wasn’t a mindless killing machine. She spared those who posed no threat to her or those who evoked her pity.
Ultimately, for her, killing was merely a means of self-preservation, a way to protect herself from being bullied.
“This humble servant wouldn’t dare,” Yun Chuanzhi said calmly. She crouched down, turned around, and exposed her slender neck and back to Bai Fenghuo.
She swayed slightly. “Here, I’ll carry you.”
Her frail body looked like a grass stem that could snap in two with the slightest touch. Bai Fenghuo lowered her gaze, the lamplight flickering in her pupils. She remained silent for a long moment.
“Didn’t you say yesterday you couldn’t carry me?” she asked.
“Carrying you down the mountain would be difficult, but carrying you back to bed is no problem at all.” Yun Chuanzhi patted her bony shoulder. “I used to carry firewood as a child. Get on.”
How dare she speak so informally? Bai Fenghuo wanted to scold her, but the words never left her throat. She reached out and wrapped her arm around the girl’s neck.
As she had promised, she actually managed to lift her onto her back. Her steps faltered for a long while before she finally steadied herself, looking like a desperate grasshopper. Bai Fenghuo couldn’t help but smile, though she quickly suppressed the urge.
Idiot, she thought.
This person, whom she had imagined as grimy, sticky, and filthy, actually smelled faintly of a clean fragrance—a scent so subtle it vanished almost as soon as it appeared.
Yun Chuanzhi swayed as she walked to the bed, turned, and gently laid the woman down before leaping to her feet and smoothing her disheveled clothes.
The woman’s temples were damp with sweat, her dark hair clinging to the back of her ears. Her cheeks were so thin they seemed translucent as she rolled over on the bed, her fingers gripping the silk beneath her.
Her slender fingers now looked as vibrant as flower petals. Yun Chuanzhi felt a surge of heat in her chest and turned her back, pretending to pour tea.
In truth, her mind was spinning like hundreds of windmills, the friction making her ears burn. In this situation, what should an Immortal Servant do?
Running away would be desertion, but seeking the Medical Immortal was forbidden. Without spiritual energy, she couldn’t concoct an antidote herself. That left only one option…
Yun Chuanzhi took a deep breath, turned with the teacup, and met the gaze of the woman’s reddened, willow-leaf eyes on the bed.
Gritting her teeth, she asked, “Shall this humble servant assist you?”
The woman remained silent for a long moment, then lowered her brows and spoke, “Why do you wear such an expression? Does assisting this venerable one displease you so?”
“Not really,” Yun Chuanzhi mumbled, touching her nose, her eyes darting away from Bai Fenghuo’s.
Though such matters should have been commonplace for Bai Fenghuo, she found herself strangely embarrassed.
“Get out,” Bai Fenghuo hissed, experiencing for the first time the sensation of being so infuriated she almost laughed. “Get out now.”
Yun Chuanzhi, feeling as if he’d been granted a pardon, didn’t dare linger a moment longer. She bowed her head and fled from the chamber, her frail body moving with such speed it left afterimages in its wake. Bai Fenghuo’s anger surged anew at the sight.
She raised her hand to slam the door shut, channeling spiritual energy to hurl the heavy gate against the wall. The impact shattered half of it, sending splinters flying.
“Overplayed your hand, didn’t you?” a mocking voice echoed from the shadows. The Iron Puppet materialized from nowhere, crawling to Bai Fenghuo’s side and settling into a seated position. “Bai Fenghuo, the woman of a thousand charms, repeatedly humiliated by a mere Immortal Servant.”
Ignoring the puppet, Bai Fenghuo pressed a palm glowing with violet light against her chest. Spiritual energy surged through her meridians, swiftly purging the lingering medicinal effects from her body, which dissipated as steam.
“She’s a demon of unknown origins, not some ordinary Immortal Servant,” Bai Fenghuo murmured, collapsing wearily onto the couch and propping her chin in her hand.
“I didn’t intend to cause trouble today, but that Pei fellow recklessly barged in. Since the opportunity presented itself, why not test Cui Ergou?”
“You’ve repeatedly deceived her, and she hasn’t shown any signs of betrayal,” the Iron Puppet said, shrugging. “I see no malice in that girl. Let’s just leave her alone.”
“Though she hasn’t slipped up yet, she’s utterly repulsive,” Bai Fenghuo sneered, examining her slender fingernails for damage. “Just recalling her expression earlier makes my bl00d boil.”
Countless people in this world hated Bai Fenghuo, but only that little slave dared to show such contempt.
“Leave. I’m retiring for the night,” Bai Fenghuo said, extinguishing the hall’s lamps. The mountain night was like a bottomless pool, so dark that not a ripple could be seen.
Those willow-leaf eyes remained open and closed in the darkness for an eternity, until a faint dawn painted the horizon with rosy clouds, before finally drifting into a shallow slumber.
Yun Chuanzhi fell asleep the moment her head hit the pillow, sinking into a deep, restful slumber. When she awoke, her body felt light and refreshed.
The tranquil surroundings were perfect for rest. Yun Chuanzhi stretched her back on the bed, the morning light casting a misty veil over the furniture, blurring its outlines.
He lingered in bed for a while longer, until the distant mountain peaks were bathed in golden light. Yawning, she finally rose, pushed open the window, and gazed out at the world, listening to the birdsong and insect chirps.
The Spring Encounter Pavilion stood on higher ground, offering a clear view of Mount Everlasting’s main peak, perpetually shrouded in swirling clouds. Between the two peaks lay a series of jagged mountain ridges, through which the Flowing Abyss River surged relentlessly, its countless waves rushing eastward toward the Boundless Sea.
Legend held that Venerable Flowing Abyss, the creator of the world, had cleaved through countless mountains with a single sword strike. The waters that gathered in the resulting chasm formed the Flowing Abyss River, and the tallest peak among them became Mount Everlasting.
Yun Chuanzhi had only heard these tales from the fallen immortals of Avici City. Now, witnessing this legendary landscape with her own eyes, her heart couldn’t help but stir with emotion.
If only I could awaken my Spirit Root, she thought. Though she longed to live a life of peaceful indolence, far from conflict, having spiritual energy would undoubtedly make things easier.
She retrieved the Iron Puppet that had absorbed Bai Fenghuo’s spiritual energy and placed it before her. The puppet faintly glowed with a violet light, swaying gently from side to side.
If I had spiritual energy right now, I could inscribe a few talismanic formations and imbue this puppet with sentience, allowing it to speak and understand. But without it, it remains just a puppet.
She wondered about the innate talent of this body. For mortals to awaken their Spirit Root, they either needed exceptional natural aptitude or the assistance of a cultivator. Exceptional aptitude was unlikely, but seeking a cultivator’s help…
In her previous life, her Spirit Root had been awakened with that person’s aid. Yet on Mount Everlasting, with its rigid hierarchy, what Immortal Cultivator would willingly help a mere Immortal Slave awaken their Spirit Root?
She frowned in thought for a moment, then suddenly remembered something, her eyes lighting up.
“I’ve got it!” she exclaimed, clapping her hands together with a smile.
