The Villainous Scum Alpha Was Reborn (GL) - Chapter 7
“I don’t like sunflowers? Who said that?” Wei Ke smiled and nodded politely at the server bringing over the porridge.
Jiang Ying was shocked. “What do you mean who said it? You said it yourself! What kind of reaction is that? Did your personality change, or did you lose your memory?”
“Oh, then you must have remembered wrong. What I said before was that I don’t like sunflower seeds. I hate the noise people make when they crack them open,” Wei Ke said seriously, making things up as she went. Since getting a second chance at life, she had discovered that her ability to lie without blinking had improved far too much. Definitely not a good sign.
Jiang Ying snorted. “Well, I’ve seen you eat shelled sunflower seeds more than a few times.”
Wei Ke pretended not to hear her and kept her head down, drinking her porridge.
After the meal, her throat felt a bit better. It was still a little hoarse, but much improved compared to how it was that morning when she first woke up.
Now that she was sure she was not sick, the last layer of worry disappeared. Using the excuse that she had not completely sobered up yet, Wei Ke had Jiang Ying take her home to grab a thermal container, and then drop her off at the Wei family home.
Jiang Ying looked at the automatic gates of the villa opening in front of them and sighed. “I honestly don’t understand what your family hired a driver for. You have to come back yourself even for something like this. Since we’re already here, why not just get it over with today?”
“Enough with the unnecessary talk.” Wei Ke unbuckled her seatbelt, turned around, and reached for the thermal container in the back seat. Then she opened the door and got out of the car.
Wei Ke’s father, Wei Hongbo, had just turned fifty this year. About six months ago, he started living in semi-retirement. His eldest daughter, Wei Huan, was highly capable and had taken over the family business. He was more than happy to enjoy his free time, which he often spent washing his prized car collection himself.
Wei Ke carried the thermal container into the house. Jiang Ying, bored in the car, noticed a temporary hose on the ground and quickly guessed that Uncle Wei was probably home. She followed the hose to find him.
Mrs. Xu Bingzhi was not at home. After her lunch break, she had gone out to spend money. Wei Ke did not bother playing games. She went straight to the master bathroom, quietly removed the brush heads from the two electric toothbrushes hanging on the wall, sealed them in a piece of plastic wrap she had torn from the kitchen, and tucked them into her pocket.
It went far more smoothly than expected.
After coming downstairs, Wei Ke briefly spoke to Aunt Qian, explaining that she was not seriously ill and would be back for the Mid-Autumn Festival. Then she left.
Unexpectedly, just as she stepped outside and was about to reach the car, she saw that the driver’s seat was empty.
Jiang Ying was gone.
Wei Ke raised her hand, about to ask a nearby auntie if she had seen Jiang Ying, when she heard cheerful voices coming from her right. She looked down at the ground and immediately understood what was happening.
Her father must have skipped work again today to mess with his beloved cars.
Wei Ke sighed deeply and turned toward the backyard.
There, she found Jiang Ying standing beside Wei Hongbo, who was dressed like a full-blown car wash worker and smiling brightly as she chatted away. She had not stopped talking.
Wei Ke stood and listened for a moment, seriously wondering if Jiang Ying had used up all her vocabulary to deliver those compliments.
In fact, that was exactly what had happened. After rattling off a long list of flowery praise, Jiang Ying could not help glancing back to see if Wei Ke had come yet. Fortunately, the heavens showed mercy, and the moment she turned around, their eyes met.
Wei Ke deliberately ignored her pleading look, walked over quickly, took the towel from her father’s hand, and started helping him wipe the roof of the car.
“Dad, you should let Xiao Fang handle small tasks like this. Your back really cannot take this kind of strain.”
Wei Hongbo scoffed. “What’s wrong with my back? When I went to your Uncle Yu’s banquet, he said I looked well-preserved for my age. He even thought I looked forty, not fifty.”
“That’s called a compliment. He said you ‘look like’ you’re forty,” Wei Ke replied, glancing at the sweat on his forehead. Then she moved from the roof to wipe down the rear of the car as well.
Jiang Ying let out a laugh. “Ke, don’t look down on older people just because you’re young. I think Uncle Wei is still very strong for his age.”
Wei Hongbo laughed. “Ke, you should learn from someone like Ying. Look how sweet she is. Now listen to how harsh your own words sound.”
“People usually say ‘still going strong’ for folks in their sixties or seventies, Dad. You’re just…” Wei Ke trailed off on purpose, but the implication in her silence could not have been more obvious.
The message was clear. See? She just compared you to someone in their seventies, and you still think it was a compliment?
Wei Hongbo’s face darkened immediately. Jiang Ying panicked and quickly tried to explain.
“Uncle, I didn’t mean it that way.”
Wei Hongbo motioned with his hand, palm facing down. “No need to worry. Uncle understands what you meant.”
Wei Ke wiped the last few drops of water from the rear lights, gave a small laugh, dropped the towel, and started running.
“I’ve got something to do, I’ll be back for the Mid-Autumn Festival.”
“You little rascal!” Wei Hongbo raised the water gun in his hand, aiming to spray her. Jiang Ying, nearly caught in the crossfire, quickly lifted her foot and ran after her.
After leaving the villa, Jiang Ying did not waste time. She made a call to confirm the hospital had availability, and since the timing worked out, she brought both the toothbrush heads and Wei Ke back to the hospital.
While they waited for the results, Jiang Ying murmured, “You seemed to be getting along really well with Uncle Wei just now. I honestly can’t imagine you not being related by bl00d.”
Wei Ke looked down the empty hallway. Her voice was hoarse.
“I brought both their toothbrushes. Let’s wait for the results.”
Jiang Ying opened her mouth, then lowered her head without saying anything.
What Wei Ke did was a definitive move. Bringing just one brush would not have been enough. She brought both, clearly wanting to rule out every possibility. Whether she and her father had different mothers or different fathers, everything would be tested at once.
But maybe that was for the best. At least it would prevent any misunderstandings.
Still, this was not something that could be spoken about openly. There was no easy way to discuss it. Jiang Ying knew that Wei Ke would never say it out loud, but inside, she was hurting.
So Jiang Ying held back the urge to ask questions and quietly sat there, pretending to be invisible.
The test results would take two hours to come out. Wei Ke waited outside the lab the entire time, unwilling to take a single step away. It was as if she feared that the moment she left, someone might tamper with the results.
Jiang Ying saw everything and felt both helpless and heartbroken.
Wei Ke leaned against the wall, caught in a whirlwind of emotion. A part of her wanted them to truly be her parents, while another part wished they were not.
She could not let go of the love she had felt for more than twenty years, but she also wanted to give herself a reason for being pushed out of the family.
The conflict inside her was painful.
But her inner turmoil could not be shared with anyone. She had swallowed everything from her past life on her own, and there was no need for Jiang Ying to know about all those painful memories or the people who caused them.
And she certainly did not want her to know that she might die again in the not-so-distant future.
Since things had already restarted, it was best to stay hopeful and keep moving forward in a better direction.
Letting her mind drift made the wait easier. Before she knew it, two hours had passed.
The sky had darkened, and lights around the hospital began to glow.
Jiang Ying and Wei Ke exchanged a look and walked together to the window to collect the test results. But when the envelope was handed over, Wei Ke immediately rolled it up tightly.
Jiang Ying stared at the report, now curled into a tube. She didn’t dare ask anything. She just quietly followed Wei Ke downstairs, got into the car, and left the hospital.
The temperature outside was around the low twenties, just the right kind of weather to feel comfortable.
Wei Ke sat in the passenger seat and rolled down the window. Her right hand rested on the frame, and her Alpha pheromones had started to leak into the breeze.
Jiang Ying, also an Alpha, instantly noticed the faint but familiar scent that belonged only to Wei Ke. A sense of alarm rose inside her. She sniffed again to confirm it. Yes, it was definitely Wei Ke’s pheromones.
Without hesitation, she turned on the indicator and made a U-turn, heading straight back to the hospital.
“What are you doing?” Wei Ke asked. She seemed agitated as the car pulled back into the hospital parking area.
The spot they had parked in earlier was already taken, so Jiang Ying drove directly to the emergency entrance and stopped there.
Wei Ke’s frustration became more obvious. She turned toward Jiang Ying with visible irritation in her voice.
“I’m asking you a question. Why are we back here?”
Jiang Ying knew that Wei Ke would never respond well to being pushed. But now was not the time to argue or delay. She forced herself to stay calm. Trying to sound light and playful, she tapped Wei Ke gently on the arm.
“Come on, don’t be mad. I just realized my pheromones might be acting up. I think my sensitive period is coming. I just need a quick suppressant shot. I promise I’ll be right back. It won’t take long.”
Wei Ke didn’t say a word.
Jiang Ying got out of the car, taking the keys with her out of habit. When she saw that Wei Ke had no intention of getting out, she walked to the front of the car and teased her with a grin.
“What? Staying in the car so you can sneak a look at the test result?”
“Get lost. Go do what you need to do,” Wei Ke said, lifting the rolled-up report like she might swat her with it.
Jiang Ying was already standing at a distance. She easily sidestepped the motion, gave a smug smile, and walked quickly into the emergency room. There, in the nearest consultation room, she asked the doctor to give her a suppressant shot.
As an Alpha, she was always extra sensitive before and during her estrus cycle. Since her cycles were irregular, she had made it a habit to get her shot every time she sensed someone else’s pheromones.
Wei Ke, on the other hand, had a perfectly regular cycle. Every year, her sensitive period came right on September tenth. As long as she got her shot in time, everything stayed under control.
But life had other plans.
When Jiang Ying walked out through the emergency exit, she saw Wei Ke leaning against the car with her eyes closed. Sweat was pouring down her face, and her body was trembling slightly and shifting restlessly. The test report she had been holding was now lying on the ground beside the car.
What was happening?
Was Wei Ke’s earlier restlessness not because of pheromone incompatibility, but a sign that her sensitive period had just begun?
Jiang Ying rushed over, grabbed the paper from the ground, and sprinted back to the emergency entrance, calling for help as she ran.
Fortunately, the emergency room was not busy. Medical staff arrived quickly. Wei Ke had only been affected for a couple of minutes before she was placed on a stretcher and given both a sedative and a suppressant injection.
In all the years Jiang Ying had known her, this was the first time she had seen Wei Ke go through an episode like this. Her heart was still racing, and she stood outside the treatment room talking to herself.
“Do I really look that awful when mine starts? That was terrifying…”
But if Wei Ke could have seen what Jiang Ying did next, she would definitely accuse her of pretending to be worried. Because right after saying that, Jiang Ying slowly unrolled the report in her hands.
