- Chapter 1.30(1) - The Fairy Kingdom - Part 1
The most shocked by Prince Leonhart’s arrival was Geoffrey. It was rare to see him flustered, but in a hurry, he expanded his defensive magic to cover Leonhart as well.
“Lady Lufenya, what is it that you desire?”
My uncle wasted no time using the latest information. He remained completely unfazed by Leonhart’s sudden entrance.
“ETERNAL SUFFERING! TO THOSE WHO GAINED THE POWER HE SO DESIRED!”
“Lady Lufenya, why are you so enraged?”
Each time my uncle spoke her name, her frenzied shouts seemed to subside slightly, as if she was regaining a fraction of herself. Perhaps it had been a long time since anyone had called her by her name.
“HE KILLED ME WITH MY OWN SWORD!”
“It was not Wolff himself who struck you down—it was his grandson.”
“YES, THAT’S RIGHT! HE REFUSED TO TELL ME WHERE WOLFF WAS… HE LIED TO ME… TOLD ME WOLFF WAS DEAD…!”
Suddenly, she fell silent. Her eyes became vacant as if she was lost in thought, reliving her memories.
“Prince Leonhart! Were you granted permission to be here?”
“Not at all. But I refuse to be left out.”
With a composed air, he joined us inside the defensive barrier.
“Judging by your demeanor, you have more information, don’t you?”
“What kind of remark is that…? Of course, I do. But… is it safe to speak freely here?”
Lufenya had been frozen in place for about five minutes. No one had moved from their positions, but we were all watching carefully to see if it was an opening to communicate. My uncle glanced at me and gave a small nod. Taking that as approval, Leonhart slightly raised his voice and revealed new information.
“The power of House Olden was granted through a contract between the first head of the family, Wolff, and Lady Lufenya, the daughter of the Fairy King.”
That aligned with what she had said earlier.
“House Olden’s first patriarch played a significant role in our kingdom’s founding. If that’s the case, he may have been the first person to receive this gift.”
Geoffrey accepted the explanation, and I, too, nodded in understanding.
“I couldn’t find the exact details of the contract, but it seems Wolff was supposed to live in the Fairy Kingdom. However, while Lady Lufenya was away seeking permission, time passed, and when she returned to this world, he was already gone.”
Fairies are essentially immortal, so their concept of time is vastly different from that of humans. It was easy to see how something like the Urashima Tarō phenomenon could have occurred.
“Unable to accept Wolff’s death, she lashed out and ravaged his lands in grief.”
“That’s beyond unreasonable…”
“Well, some say fairies are nature itself.”
So, nature itself is unreasonable? Luca and I exchanged troubled looks.
“And the one who came to defeat her was none other than Wolff’s descendant, bearing the very power she had bestowed.”
“I suppose that must have infuriated her.”
“And to make things worse, she was slain with the very sword she had given them.”
“I can see why she would be angry.”
Still, it felt like misplaced resentment. Wolff’s descendants likely hadn’t lied to her.
“I wonder… did Lady Lufenya love Wolff?”
“He had a wife and children at the time, didn’t he?”
Huh? Geoffrey was the one saying that? In the original story, he had been supporting Leonhart and Iris even before my engagement was broken.
“Geoffrey! Romance doesn’t always follow a set timeline!”
Luca, you did that on purpose, didn’t you?!
“I am against adultery!”
I had to make that clear. If people wanted to be together, they should at least follow the proper order.
“There are many forms of love.”
Leonhart, don’t act like you’ve got it all figured out!
“Besides… maybe it was simply a decision made for the sake of her kingdom.”
Seeing how Wolff’s descendants had carried on, that possibility seemed very likely. House Olden was unwavering in their dedication to protecting their loved ones and their duty.
Though I doubted she had heard our casual discussion, Lufenya suddenly stirred. She seemed unable to bear her own thoughts any longer.
“WOLFF BEING DEAD… I REFUSE TO ACCEPT IT! IT’S A LIE! A LIE! HE KEPT IT FROM ME… HE BROKE HIS PROMISE TO ME!”
She had revived in the worst way possible. Now, she was writhing in an attempt to break free from the defensive magic. Worse still, her movements completely disregarded the strain on Louise’s body. We needed to stop her immediately—she was pushing herself to the point where the very sounds of her body straining filled the air.
All at once, we shouted her name.
“Lady Lufenya!”
“Lady Lufenya! Please, calm yourself!”
But by then, it seemed she could no longer hear us.
“I’ll drag her out!”
My uncle called out to everyone. Then, placing his hand on Louise, he poured a massive amount of healing magic into her.
(Healing magic? In this situation?)
As if forced out by the spell, Lufenya’s spectral form emerged from Louise’s body. Even in her translucent state, she continued to shriek furiously.
My uncle staggered, and the Grand Marshal moved to support him, but he waved him off.
Because this was where the real battle began.
Negotiation had clearly failed. That meant the next step—forced expulsion.
Lufenya didn’t resemble the fairies I had read about in the original story. I had expected something small, fluttering with delicate wings, but instead, she had no wings at all. Her height was no different from an adult human woman, and only the pointed ears hinted at her fairy heritage.
“That’s a fairy?”
“She looks nothing like the illustrations in the books.”
“She doesn’t even have wings, which were supposed to be their defining trait.”
The defensive magic was dispelled, and Louise collapsed to the ground. Her brother, Wilhelm, rushed forward and caught her before she could hit the floor.
Meanwhile, Lufenya hovered near the ceiling, clawing at her face, screaming, “Why? No! This can’t be!” over and over again. She was completely disoriented.
“Can you take care of Louise?”
“Leave it to me!”
Wilhelm brought Louise over to us. Though still unconscious, her complexion was the best it had been in days.
“Lady Lufenya, what will you do now? Why not return to the Fairy Kingdom?”
That phrase seemed to trigger something in her. In an instant, her transparent form lunged straight at my uncle.
“I CAN’T GO BACK! I GAVE UP MY WINGS! I FINALLY OBTAINED THIS BODY!”
A defensive barrier was hastily erected, but the strength wasn’t enough—it shattered instantly. Just as she was about to reach my uncle, the Grand Marshal’s sword pierced through her form.
“Physical attacks won’t work.”
Lufenya’s body simply dissolved into mist for a moment before reforming again. She then swung her arms violently, unleashing countless razor-sharp gusts of wind in every direction.
“Whoa!”
Everyone was suddenly in danger, but another set of wind blades intercepted hers midair, canceling them out.
It was my father and Professor Alibara.
“That was incredible!”
Luca let out an admiring gasp.
From there, the battle shifted into a full-fledged magic duel. As planned, my father and Professor Alibara launched direct attacks while House Olden’s members focused on precisely timed defensive barriers. It was a process of trial and error, but soon enough, we discovered that ice magic was the most effective. Parts of Lufenya’s body began freezing solid.
“Let’s freeze her completely.”
But then, something unexpected happened.
“Mother! Stop!”
Louise’s mother suddenly charged forward, wielding the enchanted sword. Her fury was silent but unmistakable—her son had been killed, her daughter nearly suffered the same fate.
Without hesitation, she plunged the sword into Lufenya’s frozen form, shattering parts of her body.
“KIIIIIIYYYAAAAAAAAHHH!”
Lufenya let out a shrill, piercing scream as she collapsed to the ground.
Yet Lady Olden did not stop. Without a moment’s hesitation, she climbed onto the fallen fairy and repeatedly drove the sword into her, again and again.
With each strike, the shimmering ice of Lufenya’s body crumbled further.
I couldn’t tell if the scene unfolding before me was terrifying or mesmerizing.
No one in the room even remembered to breathe.
