- Chapter 2.1 - My Brother, Kaito Mitsurugi
I am Satsuki Mitsurugi.
A noble daughter of the Mitsurugi family, one of the most powerful clans in the nation.
And I have an older brother.
His name is Kaito Mitsurugi.
A man blessed with unparalleled swordsmanship, magic, and a natural affinity with spirits—as if the gods themselves had commanded him to walk the path of supremacy.
However, I have never once seen my brother attempt to claim that throne.
The brother I remember from when I was five was arrogant and domineering, always looking down on others. To be honest, I found him a little intimidating.
The brother I know now, however, is different.
He is laid-back yet genuine, with an endearing innocence. He is gentle and kind, always paying attention to me. He praises me when I work hard, helps me when I truly need it, and—above all—he frees me from the crushing responsibilities that come with being a noble.
When I feel suffocated by my duties as a representative of the nation, he allows me to simply be a girl of my age, free from burdens.
He is the coolest, the kindest, and—without a doubt—the most wonderful brother in the world.
Wanting to be of some use to him, today I carried the documents he needed and made my way to where he was.
My brother can usually be found in one of three places:
- Sneaking out of the estate.
- Lounging on the roof of the mansion.
- Or sunning himself on the flying bed he crafted in the garden.
Many of the ignorant common folk misunderstand this as him “slacking off,” calling him a “peacefully oblivious slacker.”
Since my brother himself finds the nickname amusing, I have refrained from addressing these fools—but if he ever gave me permission, I would eliminate every single one of them.
My brother does not slack off.
He finishes everything efficiently, leaving himself time to relax.
His mind has reached divine levels of foresight.
He knows everything. He can see a thousand years into the future.
Thus, he always makes the smallest possible move to bring about the best possible outcome.
I am still too immature to fully understand the depths of his wisdom, but the results speak for themselves.
One day, I hope to understand his way of thinking so that I may support him.
And so, as I searched for him, I found him in the garden.
“Brother!!”
“Hm? Oh, Satsuki.”
His drowsy expression was adorable. My heart warmed as I ran toward him.
“Brother! I compiled the information you requested—the distribution and movement patterns of magical creatures in the surrounding region!”
“Huh? You actually put that together? You didn’t have to go that far… But thank you. This really helps. As expected of you, Satsuki.”
“Ehehe~”
Hearing his praise and feeling his hand gently ruffle my hair, my cheeks grew warm with delight.
“By the way, Brother, why did you need that information?”
“Oh, I didn’t mention it? I’ve been invited to a massive barbecue party at Yamada’s ranch in a few days.”
“Oh! Is that so? As expected, everyone adores you, Brother.”
My brother often sneaks out of the estate to take strolls through the city, and as a result, he has become beloved by the townspeople.
This is highly unusual for a member of the Mitsurugi family.
Our lineage has always been defined by absolute strength—leaders who charge forward with unparalleled power, leaving the people no choice but to follow in their wake.
But my brother is different.
Despite his overwhelming strength, he never flaunts it.
Instead, he walks among the people, speaks to them as equals, and shares in their laughter.
At first, I didn’t understand why he did this.
But now, I do.
As rulers, we are the head and heart of our people.
Without us, they would falter.
But the same is true for us. We need them just as much.
Without the people, we would have no power to wield. Without them, we could not survive.
Our ancestors ruled with overwhelming strength, compelling the people to follow them out of sheer might.
But my brother saw that true power could not be realized that way.
Instead, he chose to earn their trust by engaging with them directly.
By doing so, he fostered a stronger, more unified bond between ruler and subject—one that empowered the people to stand beside their leader of their own will.
This city itself is an extension of my brother’s power.
“Am I really that admired? I still have a long way to go.”
(Ah… Even with all his strength, he remains so humble. That’s just how my brother is.)
I found myself falling for him even more.
“Anyway, back on topic. Since I’m attending the barbecue, I thought I should bring a gift. And what’s better for a barbecue than premium meat? I was thinking of bringing some Heavenly Ox.”
“I see. That would certainly be an excellent choice.”
The Heavenly Ox, as the name suggests, is a rare breed of cattle with angelic wings.
Its meat is considered divine, said to be so exquisite that it could transport one’s soul to the heavens.
However, catching one is extremely difficult due to its enhanced danger perception.
Heavenly Oxen possess an almost supernatural ability to sense threats, making them incredibly hard to find.
Even if spotted, their ever-changing migration routes—which shift based on the local ecosystem’s predator activity—make them nearly impossible to track down.
“There have been recent sightings of Heavenly Ox in the area. I probably could have found them without a map, but having one makes things easier. Plus, the information will be useful in other ways too.”
“I see! I’m so happy I could be of help!”
“Yeah, you really helped me out. I’m lucky to have such an incredible little sister.”
“Ehehe~”
His praise, along with a gentle pat on my head, filled me with pure happiness.
“Oh, that reminds me. I was invited to sample the meat for the barbecue today. Do you want to come along?”
“I… Can I really come?”
Being invited by my brother made me incredibly happy, but I was also nervous.
I wasn’t used to interacting so casually with commoners the way my brother did.
Would I make them uncomfortable? Would I ruin the mood?
Sensing my hesitation, my brother gave me a reassuring smile.
He crouched slightly so we were at eye level and spoke gently.
“You’ll be fine, Satsuki. I just want you to enjoy yourself. If anything makes you uneasy, just tell me. I’ll take care of it. So just relax, okay?”
“Brother… Yes!”
My brother truly is a god.
And so, guided by him, I walked through the city.
His escort was flawless, making sure I was comfortable while introducing me to new experiences along the way.
Eventually, we arrived at our destination.
“Hey, Kaito! Good to see ya! And… wait, is this Satsuki-sama?”
A well-built man, exuding warmth and friendliness, greeted us with a broad smile.
“Yeah, that’s right. This is my little sister, Satsuki.”
“I am Satsuki Mitsurugi. Thank you for having me today.”
Unsure of how to respond, I defaulted to my usual formal greeting.
“Oh, uh… Well, um…”
“Haha, Yamada, no need to be so stiff. We’re just here to have fun.”
“I-I see! I might not be used to this, but I’ll do my best. Please forgive any awkwardness on my part.”
“No problem! If Kaito says so, then I’ll roll with it. Looking forward to it!”
It was clear that Yamada trusted my brother deeply, which reassured me.
