- The Virtually Exiled Duke’s Daughter Is Troubled When Her Fiancé in a Neighboring Country Says, "I Will Never Love You"
- Episode 6 - Deborah's Journey to the Neighboring Country
With this incident, the Mamuto royal family… no, not just the royal family, but also the generals and the prime minister were all at their wits’ end.
Each of them had their own foolish son who had been led astray by the baron’s daughter.
Duke Mauzy vehemently protested, claiming his daughter had been insulted, and said he would make this public.
The guests who attended the party must all be excitedly gossiping right now. Even if we manage to silence Duke Mauzy, it will be difficult to keep this story under wraps.
So everyone, though surprised by Leroy’s proposed plot, had no choice but to go along with it.
Prince Aaron stepped down from his position as crown prince due to a serious illness and became unable to leave the detached palace.
The name of the disease was kept secret, but the saying “a fool won’t change until they die” about this incurable disease… isn’t entirely a lie.
Upon learning of his illness and realizing his (social) death, Prince Aaron seemed to have worried about Deborah, who had always been there for him. “It would be cruel to involve her and confine her to the palace.
But kind-hearted Deborah would say she would stay by my side until I die, even if I told her the truth. So, with the cooperation of the baron’s daughter and my close aides, I staged a shallow act in public to break off the engagement and set Deborah free.”
It seems that the general’s and the prime minister’s sons have sworn lifelong loyalty to Prince Aaron. Therefore, they are said to be giving up their future prospects and serving under the guards and attendants of the detached palace to protect Aaron.
It is also said that Baroness Fiona’s daughter, moved by the prince’s feelings, has joined the staff at the detached palace.
“…sigh. Then why am I being exiled abroad?”
At Deborah’s words, the maid stiffened and remained silent for a while, but eventually began to speak slowly.
Instead of swallowing Leroy’s proposal whole, the royal family demanded that Deborah be exiled from the country.
As Deborah herself said, you can’t put a lock on people’s mouths; you can’t trust when she might accidentally let the truth slip out. The royal family can’t spend all that time living in fear.
Deborah’s public stance is said to be, “At first, she was devastated by Prince Aaron’s betrayal, and then upon learning of the prince’s illness, she wept and locked herself in her room. However, when the Volks Kingdom hinted at additional demands beyond reparations, she selflessly offered herself as a human sacrifice to protect her beloved prince and her homeland, a truly noble maiden.”
Deborah got a headache from the terrible melodramatic story.
But, I see, if they send her off as a bride to the neighboring country, it would be as if they had sealed her mouth.
Even if she were to speak the truth in Volks, they could just claim, “She went mad from the hardships of living as a hostage in Volks,” which would protect the position of the Mammut royal family and also discredit Volks.
“Weren’t your father and brother opposed to the exile?”
“Of course, I think I opposed it! … But”
Due to the Prime Minister’s son becoming an attendant apprentice at the detached palace, the succession position for the Prime Minister, who has no other heirs but daughters, has become vacant.
Leroy married the prime minister’s daughter, became a son-in-law, and was set to succeed him.
The Duke of Mauzy has also created a debt with the royal family, and if the eldest brother succeeds the ducal house and the second brother becomes the next prime minister, the balance of power within the country will change significantly.
This would be more beneficial than having Deborah become the crown princess. The position of crown princess could probably be obtained by telling the royal family to “settle the debt” when the eldest brother’s child is born in the future.
(…or rather, I feel like Father and Brother Leroy had anticipated even that level of exchange conditions from the beginning.)
To put it bluntly, Deborah was sold out by the ducal family and discarded. Without even an escort, she was sent alone to marry a man in a neighboring country… a country that had been an enemy just six months ago, to a man whose face she didn’t even know. Moreover, her husband was a marquis, but a man who had lost his wife. They told her to become his second wife.
The maid in front of me explained that she was accompanying me to the border.
Deborah, having heard everything, let out a long, thin sigh and leaned back in the carriage seat.
“……I see.”
Deborah muttered with a nonchalant attitude, but then reconsidered, straightened her back, and put on a smile.
(…But well, it’s better than being exiled from the country, and this is also a kind of political marriage. Besides, it might be much better than becoming the crown princess as I was.)
Even if the other person is an old, greasy, lecherous man, it might be mentally easier than marrying the foolish and stupid Prince Aaron and spending a lifetime supporting him, Deborah thought as she looked out the carriage window.
The carriage descended south through the vast Mauzy Duchy, passing through one of the country’s most fertile agricultural regions.
After a full day’s journey, the carriage finally reached the border when it was completely dark. In the middle of the bridge spanning the river that separated the two countries, Deborah stepped down from the carriage to find a new carriage waiting for her.
By the light of the torches, she confirmed the crest of the Sisley Marquisate was engraved on the carriage. Standing next to it was a man
“Lady Deborah, we have been expecting you. I am Ashley, the butler serving the Sisley Marquess family. My master is waiting for you at the mansion. Please, get in.”
Thus, Deborah was taken alone to the Sisley residence in the Volks Kingdom.
