Chapter 1: Opening Her Eyes to a Battlefield
Fu Yining was woken up by a noisy mix of male and female voices, arguing in chaos.
When she opened her eyes, she saw three people standing in front of her: two women and one man.
The woman in a flowing lotus-colored dress was being held in the man’s arms, while the other, dressed in pale pink with softly curled hair, was half-sitting on the floor. Her tear-filled eyes trembled, making her look utterly pitiful.
The man, cradling the pure and delicate lotus-dressed woman, pointed angrily at the beautiful pink-clothed woman on the floor and shouted, “You actually pushed An Ran down the stairs? How can a vicious woman like you be worthy of marrying into our Yu family!”
The pink-dressed woman tearfully pleaded, “Mingze, I didn’t! I didn’t push her!”
“You didn’t? I saw it clearly from behind. And you still dare deny it?”
The man was furious, taking a deep breath. “An Ran just returned from abroad. You said you’d get along with her, but now it’s clear you were lying! Be honest. Have you been planning to hurt her all along?”
“I didn’t!”
“Song Qingyu, stop lying!”
The lotus-dressed woman gently tugged on the angry man’s sleeve, her voice soft as she tried to calm him down. “Mingze, let it go. I believe Qingyu didn’t do it on purpose. Look, I’m fine. Don’t be so harsh.”
“An Ran, you’re just too kind!” The man held her soft hand and said, “If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes and pulled you back in time, Song Qingyu’s vicious plan would’ve worked!”
“Mingze, why won’t you believe me? I really didn’t push her!”
The pink-dressed woman couldn’t believe what she was seeing—her own husband was being this intimate with another woman?
“Song Qingyu, stop calling my name! A woman as toxic as you doesn’t deserve to stay in the Yu family!”
“Mingze—”
Song Qingyu. Mingze. An Ran. The Yu family… The more Fu Yining listened, the more familiar it sounded.
Wait a minute—weren’t these the exact same names as the characters in that web novel she was reading before bed last night?
Speaking of that novel, Fu Yining had shed plenty of tears over it. But not from the touching romance between the male and female leads—most of the time, it was because she was fuming over how ridiculous the plot was.
The whole story was filled with melodramatic tropes—it was one of those classic “cold CEO chasing his ex-wife after a painful breakup” dramas.
It all began when the male lead, Yu Mingze, was forced to marry a pitiful girl named Song Qingyu whom he didn’t love. And thus began the flaming wreckage of the “ex-wife” arc.
There was no falling in love after marriage. Because in Yu Mingze’s heart, there was always the perfect, untouchable first love—his pure white moonlight. He saw no other woman as worthy, and unfortunately, his first love left the country to study abroad after they broke up.
During that time, Yu Mingze stayed loyal to his “white moonlight,” keeping himself pure for her—even after marrying Song Qingyu. They slept in separate rooms, maintaining his pure, saintly image.
Well, except for one drunken night, where things went off the rails and Song Qingyu ended up pregnant.
From there, the drama escalated: the white moonlight returned from abroad and deliberately sowed discord, leading to endless misunderstandings. The couple grew apart, Song Qingyu lost the baby and fell into despair, while Yu Mingze finally realized he had feelings for her. Thus began the classic “she runs, he chases” storyline.
Of course, everything wrapped up neatly: the white moonlight’s vicious nature was exposed, and she was forced to flee abroad in disgrace. The male and female leads reconciled, had two fat, healthy babies, and lived happily ever after.
It would’ve been perfect—except for what the male lead said at the end:
“If only our first child were still here.”
“If only…”
“If…”
Only.
Seriously?! Do you really not know who was responsible for that child never being born?
And the worst part? The female lead actually leaned into his arms and comforted him, saying, “Well, we have two kids now. Let the past stay in the past. It’s okay.”
“It’s okay”?!!
The female lead actually said “it’s okay”?!
Wasn’t it she who got emotionally and physically hurt from being betrayed and having a miscarriage?
While the characters in the book embraced their happily ever after, Fu Yining was so furious she couldn’t sleep that night. Even after leaving paragraph after paragraph of scathing one-star reviews, her anger remained.
But she didn’t expect the author—apparently also a night owl—to reply to her comment shortly after.
“:)”
That small, smug smiley face caused immense psychological damage to Fu Yining’s already fragile heart.
She had planned to put her phone down and go to sleep. Instead, she sat up in bed and started a full-on battle with the author over the ridiculous ending and the absurd dialogue between the main characters. By 3 a.m., a crowd of gossip-hungry spectators had gathered to watch the drama unfold in the comments.
The author firmly defended their characters, insisting the male and female leads belonged together and all those other events were “necessary for the plot.” Fu Yining, on the other hand, believed the female lead should have kicked that dumbass male lead to the curb and let him spend the rest of his life with his precious white moonlight.
Neither side would back down. Among the hundreds of replies, their heated exchange—full of name-calling and sarcasm—stood out in stark contrast to the others.
Finally, the author replied with one last sentence:
“If you’re so capable, why don’t you write it yourself?”
Fu Yining’s vision went black. It felt like she fainted from sheer anger.
When she opened her eyes again—
The very characters she had just been furiously trashing were standing in front of her.
Hiss—
The three people were in a stalemate, repeating lines she remembered clearly from the novel. Fu Yining stood silently to the side, watching them.
If her guess was right, this scene must be when the “white moonlight” side character just returned from abroad and was beginning to stir up trouble between the male and female leads.
Watching this melodramatic scene unfold before her like a real-life soap opera, Fu Yining went quiet.
Then… who was she?
Was she some matronly side character in the Yu household—responsible for handling the household chores and acting as an occasional witness to drama?
Or maybe just a humble little maid who mopped the floor while secretly eavesdropping and munching on popcorn?
Just as Fu Yining was trying to figure out who she might be, the male lead Yu Mingze noticed her prolonged silence. Looking slightly confused, he turned to her.
“Mom, something like this just happened. What do you think we should do?”
…Mom?
Fu Yining instinctively looked around, only to find there was no one else nearby. The servants in their matching blue-and-lotus-colored uniforms were all standing far away, as if afraid of being caught up in the “war zone” that was unfolding.
Fu Yining frowned slightly and quickly glanced down at her outfit.
She was wearing an expensive custom-made dress… a giant gemstone ring on her finger… and a translucent jade bangle on her wrist…
“Mom, what’s wrong?” Yu Mingze finally noticed Fu Yining’s strange behavior and asked again, anxiously.
The lotus-dress girl beside him, Zheng Anran, also stepped forward with concern.
“Aunt Fu, are you alright? It’s my fault… If I hadn’t suddenly shown up today, this wouldn’t have happened.”
But Fu Yining still didn’t respond.
“I… I should go.”
Zheng Anran dabbed the corners of her eyes, which had welled up with tears, and made a move to leave.
“Anran, this isn’t your fault!” Yu Mingze immediately stopped his white moonlight and reassured her before glaring at Song Qingyu.
“If anyone’s at fault, it’s Song Qingyu. If someone should leave, it’s her!”
His actions left Song Qingyu in tears.
With misty eyes, she looked from the furious Yu Mingze to the expressionless Fu Yining, shaking her head and explaining over and over:
“Mom, Mingze, please believe me. I really didn’t push her!”
