- Chapter 12.1 - New Progress – Holding Hands
Seeing how well-behaved he was now, Ning Yao suddenly felt that there was no rush to ask questions anymore.
When she was a child, Lao Jie, who raised her, often told her all sorts of interesting and pointless stories. One of them went like this:
“A man lost several cows and was sure that his neighbor did it, so he killed him. Is he bad?”
Ning Yao had been taught to distinguish right from wrong since childhood, so she immediately said righteously, “Yes! That’s bad! Was it really necessary to go that far?”
Jie Zhongyi said, “Then let me tell you this—the neighbor was a strange person who had tried to set his house on fire multiple times. The man even overheard him saying that he had failed to poison him and only managed to poison the cows. In a moment of anger, he killed the neighbor. Now what do you think?”
Ning Yao hesitated. “What kind of neighbor is that? He wanted to harm people first, so he brought it upon himself.”
Jie Zhongyi continued, “But what if I told you that years ago, the man had brutally killed the neighbor’s wife and drowned his child? The neighbor changed his identity just to get revenge. What do you think now?”
Ning Yao sighed. “I just want to say, Lao Jie, can you tell the whole story at once instead of flipping it again and again?”
Jie Zhongyi laughed. “Yao Yao, that’s how things are in this world. Events keep turning around. No one comes with their entire life story written on their face for you to understand at a glance. Everything happens for a reason, and those reasons lead to consequences.”
Thinking about this, Ning Yao pushed herself up from the ground and reached out a hand to Feng Jingzhuo.
“Jingzhuo, I won’t ask about your past. It doesn’t matter. Here in the mountains, knowing or not knowing won’t help us live any better. So if you ever have a problem, just tell us. We’ll figure it out together, no questions asked.”
She shook her hand slightly. “Come on, I’ll pull you up.”
Sunlight passed through her fingers as she moved, casting a golden glow. Even before touching it, the warmth could be felt.
Feng Jingzhuo slowly lifted his hand. His fingertips hesitated for a moment before carefully touching hers, only letting their fingertips meet.
He couldn’t quite describe the feeling—just that it was especially…
Soft. Soft enough to make something deep in his heart collapse a little.
Ning Yao, being straightforward, grabbed his whole hand and pulled him up in one go.
She patted the dust off her clothes. “Let’s head back. Miss Bamboo (Ning Yuzhu) is probably still waiting to be comforted. But he’s too much trouble, so you handle that yourself. I wouldn’t be much help.”
Feng Jingzhuo apologized, “Ning Yuzhu was really angry this morning. It was my fault.”
Ning Yao gave him a sideways glance. “Ning Yuzhu? Who’s that? I don’t even know who you’re talking about. He’s just your younger brother. And when dealing with younger brothers, you just smack them once and then give them something nice. They’ll be wagging their tails in no time.”
Feng Jingzhuo chuckled. “I’ve never heard of anyone treating their brother like that outside of Luoxiang Mountain.”
“Well, that’s up to you. But he does like you,” Ning Yao observed, then added, “because you look good. That’s why he likes sticking close to you.”
Hmm, he really did look good—even with those little flaws, he was still stunning.
Feng Jingzhuo fell silent for a moment. Thinking about his face and everything that had happened today, he finally mustered up the courage to say, “Yao Yao, I’m willing to tell you my story.”
Ning Yao was surprised. “Huh?”
Feng Jingzhuo said softly, “You treat me sincerely. If I keep hiding things, I’m afraid you’ll think I’m not being sincere with you.”
Ning Yao stared at him in a daze, feeling a little nervous. It was the kind of nervousness that came when something you’d been hoping for was finally within reach.
She thought about how Feng Jingzhuo had been at the beginning—neither alive nor dead. And now, here he was, saying, ‘I’m afraid you’ll think I’m not being sincere.’
So honest. Like a little puppy.
He’s making progress, right? He’s starting to open up and trust her now, right? She’s a little closer to her goal, right?
Ning Yao was delighted. “Go ahead. I’m listening. That way, I’ll know better how to protect you.”
Feng Jingzhuo’s expression softened. He was just about to speak when a loud voice called from above:
“Yao Yao! Someone’s here from Xuanyue Immortal Sect. Hurry up! They’re not easy to deal with!”
It was Chu Xiao anxiously reporting.
Ning Yao tensed up for a moment. Not easy to deal with? Could it be that Xuanyue Immortal Sect had fallen under Cangyuan’s control and sent someone to attack them?
Then she thought again—no, that couldn’t be it. If it were an attack, it wouldn’t just be one person.
Xuanyue Immortal Sect… they were probably here for Feng Jingzhuo.
She turned to him. “Jingzhuo, you should—”
Feng Jingzhuo quickly said, “Yao Yao, I want to go with you.”
Ning Yao hesitated. “They’re not good people. If they say nasty things to you, what then?”
Feng Jingzhuo shook his head, his tone firm. “I’m not afraid of words. Since they’re here for me, I want to hear it for myself.”
Ning Yao thought about it and agreed. “Alright. In any case, I’ll be there.”

Ning Yao didn’t really love Jingzhou. She just used him. Too bad for him suffering for a thousand years in guilt for killing her when that was really her goal in the first place.
