“Come back here. You still need another layer of Kongqing Revitalizing Dew—it’ll ease your pain.”
This time, Feng Jingzhuo didn’t listen. He remained in the same position.
“Ning Sect Leader, even if you broke down this ruined body and count it piece by piece, it wouldn’t be worth a single drop of Kongqing Revitalizing Dew. You should reconsider. Don’t make a losing deal.”
Ning Yao felt strangely upset hearing that. “Look at the way you’re talking.”
Feng Jingzhuo said nothing.
Ning Yao looked at the medicine in her hand. “Aren’t you underestimating yourself a bit too much? Ah, forget it.”
She uncapped the bottle and casually tossed the lid aside, tilting the bottle to pour the medicine over the wounds on his tail. His tail was long and had many injuries, so she moved along it as she applied the medicine. It took a while before she was done.
Feng Jingzhuo lowered his head. The places where the medicine covered felt cool, the pain easing significantly. It really was Kongqing Revitalizing Dew.
His dark, quiet glare lingered for a moment before he finally spoke. “Sect Leader Ning, you said something incorrect just now.”
Ning Yao had just finished the medicine. She tossed the empty bottle behind her, crouching down again to check the effects. “Does it matter? Are you going to fine me?”
Feng Jingzhuo paused, looking at his tail. “If you insist on taking me away, you will inevitably offend Lady Lian Zhen.”
“She wants every single one of the 1,191 dragon scales on my body. If even one goes missing, she will hunt it down. Whoever touches what belongs to her will only bring trouble upon themselves.”
He lifted his head. She bent down while he sat, their gazes meeting at eye level.
“Sect Leader Ning, Lady Lian Zhen is very fond of me. Sending me back to be punished is only temporary. Xuan Yue Immortal Sect has already given me to her.”
He paused for a moment, with no expression.
“I will always be her plaything.”
Ning Yao finally saw Feng Jingzhuo’s face clearly.
Looking at the burns and knife scars covering his features, she felt a deep, sinking shock.
Feng Jingzhuo avoided his eyes, lowering his head so his face was hidden in shadow.
“Murong Lian Zhen is known for her charm and cunning, while you, Sect Leader Ning, are pure and untainted. Now, do you really want to make an enemy and risk your reputation just to fight over a lowly demon?”
Ning Yao didn’t answer immediately. She slouched forward.
Feng Jingzhuo instinctively shrank back.
She moved closer again, and he retreated once more. But there was already a wall behind him—there was nowhere left to go. His weak leaning posture turned into complete contact with the cold surface.
Ning Yao said, “There’s no one else here. Just tell me honestly—do you not want to go back to Fengxie Dao Sect?”
Feng Jingzhuo turned his head away. “Sect Leader Ning, that question holds no meaning for me.”
“How could it have no meaning?” Ning Yao leaned in, following the direction of his turned face.
“As long as I’m here, I won’t let Lady Lian Zhen trouble you. If you hate that place, I’ll take you away.”
Feng Jingzhuo looked at her.
Her appearance was deceiving—especially in the dim light of the underground prison. Her bright eyes and the bl00d-red mark between her brows gave her an almost holy aura.
At first glance, she really did seem like a bodhisattva.
But bodhisattvas would never appear before him.
The only things that ever came his way were ghosts and monsters.
He said, “Sect Leader Ning, you must be joking. It doesn’t matter to me. Xuan Yue Immortal Sect, Fengxie Dao Sect, or Luo Xiang Mountain—it’s all the same.”
“Then—”
Just as Ning Yao was about to speak, Feng Jingzhuo’s eyelids drooped. He could no longer hold on and suddenly he passed out.
…
Luo Xiang Mountain was located upstream of Xu River, at the center of Zanxue Lake—a solitary mountain, surrounded by water.
The lake was tranquil, as still as a mirror. In the distance, celestial mountains stretched into the horizon, their silhouettes pure and boundless beneath the bright moon.
A single figure moved swiftly across the water, like a drifting cloud.
Ning Yao carried Feng Jingzhuo on her shoulder, returning to the mountaintop before midnight. After a moment of thought, she decided to place him in her own quarters.
She wasn’t one to fuss over things. She set him directly on her bed and stood with her hands on her hips, contemplating her next move.
Step one was simple—she had already rescued him.
Step two—becoming his wife—was a long-term goal, much more complicated. It would have to be done slowly.
First things first… before anything else, she needed to heal him. After all, romance could only happen if he was in good health, right?
Ning Yao stepped closer and placed her fingers on Feng Jingzhuo’s wrist.
As a Bodhi, she was a natural healer. Her healing abilities were far purer than offensive spiritual arts. As she examined his pulse, several treatment plans formed in her mind.
She was comparing which would be best when she heard rustling behind her.
Turning toward the door, she reached out and grabbed two peeking heads—. “What are you two so anxious for? If something happens, don’t you think I’d tell you?”
The old man and young boy exchanged guilty looks.
The younger one spoke first. “Yao Yao, is Sister Tang’s information correct? Did you really bring him back? ”
“Yeah.”
“How does he look? Is he pretty?”
Ning Yao replied indifferently, “Why do you care?”
The old man nudged the boy with his elbow and leaned in. “How far have things progressed between you two?”
Ning Yao said, “We’re getting married tomorrow. Straight to the bridal chamber.”
The old man was displeased. “Look at you. I just asked a question, and your attitude is already so careless? I’m your grandmaster! Where’s your respect for your elders?”
Ning Yao replied, “Becoming a wife isn’t like being a grandchild—it’s not that easy.”
The old man sucked in a breath. “You’re trying to anger me to death.”
The young boy, Ning Yuzhu, interrupted, “Master Jie, you’re being too impatient. I get that you’re worried—since Sister Tang is hopeless now, you’re placing all your hopes on Yao Yao. But she’s only just met that dragon for a few hours! You can’t force a marriage! He has to sincerely see Yao Yao as his wife.”
Ning Yao smirked. “Ning Yuzhu, you’re quite sensible today. Perfect—go run an errand for me.”
Ning Yuzhu peered into the room. “It’s so late—what do you need now? You just like ordering me around… Hey, don’t block the way! I just want a glimpse of my future second brother-in-law.”
Ning Yao stood in his way. “Scram. Since you’re so idle, go to the medicine valley and bring back Revitalization Pills and Bone-Growth Elixirs. Gather as much Bloodbone Ginseng and Green Ruins Grass as you can, and from the Sacred Bright Pavilion, loosen the soil around the Nine Yin Frost Lingzhi—we’ll need it soon.”
Jie Zhongyi frowned. “Just how severe are his injuries? Even the Nine Yin Frost Lingzhi? Did things not go smoothly?”
Ning Yao waved her hand to dismiss Yuzhu. “I’m fine. It’s Xuan Yue Immortal Sect that’s up to no good…”
