- Chapter 18 - Almost Forgot They Were Already Divorced
“Xiao Yi?”
There were faint, messy footsteps outside. When Chi Yi woke up, Wen Ranqing was gently massaging her temples. The lingering floral scent still hung in the air, faintly agitating her nerves.
“How did I fall asleep…” Chi Yi turned her face away, avoiding Wen Ranqing’s touch. Her head ached faintly from not having slept enough.
Her delicate brows furrowed again. With a lazy stretch, Chi Yi sprawled bonelessly across the chair, her usually crisp and lively mid-length hair hanging down in loose, casual waves.
Standing so close, Wen Ranqing couldn’t help but notice how Chi Yi had slimmed down. Her skin had tanned slightly into a healthy light wheat color, transitioning to a paler tone around her exposed neck.
Chi Yi had a perfect right-angled shoulder line, yet she rarely wore dresses in her daily life. Wen Ranqing had only glimpsed the beautiful curve of her neck and shoulders during special events — like the night Chi Yi wore a gown, the smooth skin over her collarbone illuminated under the lights.
“President Wen, what are you looking at?” Chi Yi tilted her head slightly, giving Wen Ranqing a bland glance as she rubbed her eyes lazily.
Outside the window, the late evening sky burned red. Judging from the noise outside, the rescue team had probably arrived. Wen Ranqing had woken her up but hadn’t spoken a word, forcing Chi Yi to break the silence. Two Alphas and Omegas sharing a room for so long could easily cause misunderstandings.
“It’s nothing. Don’t rub your eyes like that — it’s not hygienic.”
Wen Ranqing’s face still bore the lingering traces of earlier emotion, and her ears flushed red again. Embarrassed, she quickly averted her gaze from Chi Yi’s collarbone, forcing herself not to dwell on the things that made her heart race. She gently lowered Chi Yi’s hand.
Wen Ranqing’s fingertips were warm. She still wore only the rumpled short-sleeved shirt, draped with a thin blanket, while Chi Yi’s windbreaker was now covering her.
How long had she been awake?
Chi Yi didn’t resist, but her brow remained furrowed as she exhaled a long breath.
Actually, the people outside had arrived twenty minutes ago. Since there hadn’t been any danger, the rescue team hadn’t come into the courtyard; instead, they chatted with the forest ranger about the surrounding mountain conditions.
Those waiting in the courtyard were all Wen family personnel. Because of Wen Ranqing’s sensitive condition, only her private doctor and her brother, Wen Junze — the only two who weren’t Betas — accompanied her.
Wen Ranqing’s personal doctor, An Li, an Omega woman who also participated in Wen Corporation’s pharmaceutical R&D projects related to Wen Ranqing, had already noticed the unusual pheromone saturation coming from the room. She grew worried about her boss’s state.
“Young Master Wen, should we go knock?” An Li asked anxiously. “President Wen’s condition may deteriorate if we delay further without administering medication.”
Holding an umbrella, Wen Junze stood tall and upright, a conflicted look crossing his youthful features.
“My sister said she would be out soon, so let’s wait a little longer,” he said.
Inside, Wen Ranqing’s warm fingers rested gently against Chi Yi’s forehead, smoothing out her frown. Because Chi Yi was sitting, Wen Ranqing had to lean in close, bracing herself on the table. As she bent over, the blanket slipped slightly off her shoulders, revealing a stunning, seductive silhouette right before Chi Yi’s eyes.
“President Wen heard that, didn’t you?” Chi Yi’s brows furrowed again. She grabbed the sides of the blanket and yanked Wen Ranqing closer, her voice sharp — as if angry at herself for not being able to stay unaffected.
“Xiao Yi…” Caught off guard, Wen Ranqing could only steady herself by kneeling one knee onto Chi Yi’s chair, her weight almost entirely pressing against Chi Yi. Her soft lips brushed Chi Yi’s cheek as she moved.
Wen Ranqing tried to shift away, but Chi Yi’s grip on the blanket kept her locked in place. Knowing that Wen Junze and the Wen Corporation staff were just outside the door, shame surged through Wen Ranqing.
Chi Yi leaned in close, murmuring into Wen Ranqing’s ear,
“Hmm? Didn’t President Wen hear them?”
“It sounds like people are waiting outside. So why is President Wen still here, getting handsy?”
Wen Ranqing’s breathing grew ragged, her eyes turning misty. She couldn’t handle Chi Yi’s torment at such close proximity and pleaded softly,
“Let me go first, okay? I… I have something to say to you.”
Outside, the pheromone saturation had reached critical levels. An Li, worried sick, asked,
“Young Master Wen, should we knock now? President Wen’s body can’t sustain this without the injection.”
Footsteps approached the door. An Li gave a few gentle knocks, while Wen Junze discreetly moved away with the other staff members to avoid suspicion.
Seeing Wen Ranqing’s panicked expression, Chi Yi suddenly felt a cruel satisfaction — not because of anything malicious, but simply because Wen Ranqing, with her flushed cheeks and tear-bright eyes, looked breathtakingly beautiful. It stirred a mischievous impulse deep inside her.
She tugged lightly on the blanket and teased,
“No. Can’t President Wen still talk like this?”
“I—I can…” Wen Ranqing stammered breathlessly.
Wen Ranqing’s knees were weak, her eartips so red they looked ready to bleed. Her soft waist and abdomen dipped into a graceful curve, the exposed skin rising and falling with her breath as she spoke to Chi Yi:
“Will you be attending the graduation ceremony, Xiao Yi?”
It wasn’t the fear of being caught by others that made her feel so nervous and embarrassed — it was because…
Chi Yi, fully conscious, was now leaning in so close. Her youthful, vibrant features were right in front of Wen Ranqing’s eyes, those pure black lashes fixed intently on her.
The lively, warm little Chi Yi she once knew had grown up into someone who could even tease her now.
Chi Yi’s lips, looking so soft and tempting, parted slightly.
“Of course. There will be plenty of good-looking junior brothers and sisters to see at graduation, and my most admired professor too…”
“President Wen, are you alright?”
A knock sounded at the door not far away. But Chi Yi, ignoring it completely, kept speaking. Wen Ranqing bit her lower lip, lifting her eyes to meet Chi Yi’s teasing gaze. Her cheeks flushed even deeper.
“Xiao Yi…” Wen Ranqing called out in a soft whimper,
“You know that’s not what I meant.”
What she truly hoped for was to see Chi Yi — as the representative of the outstanding graduates — give her speech. She had imagined placing the tassel on Chi Yi’s cap with her own hand, witnessing her shining brightly under the spotlight.
She had wished for this since the first time she returned to her alma mater to deliver a commencement address.
And ever since realizing her true feelings, she had awaited this moment every year.
She wanted to see Chi Yi graduate this year. She had slowly handed over the company to Wen Junze, letting him learn to manage things — not by practicing with a subsidiary, but by transferring real shares and authority to him, despite facing criticism.
After Chi Yi’s graduation, Wen Ranqing hadn’t decided what she would do next — but the idea of simply living her life with Chi Yi filled her heart with happiness.
Even though they were now divorced.
The school, in diplomatic words, had canceled her role in the tassel-turning ceremony as an outstanding alumna.
Yet she still wanted to be there — to witness Chi Yi’s most important moment.
Graduating from Beihang University, something Chi Yi had worked tirelessly toward since high school, must be a milestone of profound importance for her.
And in that moment, Chi Yi would surely be dazzling.
“President Wen, may I come in? Your physical condition is becoming dangerous,” came another urgent knock at the door.
Chi Yi also realized that Wen Ranqing’s pheromone concentration was becoming too heavy. Her heart softened slightly. She stopped teasing her and gently pulled the blanket up again, covering Wen Ranqing’s shoulders.
“I never refused the invitation,” Chi Yi murmured.
Such an intimate posture almost made her forget —
they were already divorced.
Something soft fell against her shoulder — the thin blanket slipped to the floor. Wen Ranqing’s trembling shoulder brushed hers. After a moment’s hesitation, Wen Ranqing rested herself lightly against Chi Yi.
She wasn’t trying to be seductive.
She didn’t know how to test Chi Yi’s feelings or judge them.
She had no tricks — she simply wondered: if Chi Yi was even the slightest bit shallow, would she find herself moved by Wen Ranqing’s appearance?
Wen Ranqing feared that her late confession would only deepen Chi Yi’s misunderstanding or even disgust.
But she also knew — Chi Yi had once made her choice already.
The only path left now was for her to pursue Chi Yi alone.
“President Wen, what do you think you’re doing?”
Chi Yi’s breathing grew heavy. Everyone knew they were divorced.
She didn’t want others to misinterpret Wen Ranqing’s actions, to gossip about her.
Wen Ranqing, still worried, whispered,
“Did you mean it?”
In the tight, confined space, Chi Yi could see every fine detail — the curve of Wen Ranqing’s lips, the tension in her body pressing against hers. And yet her expression was so earnest — like a clumsy little fox.
“I meant it,” Chi Yi said, not knowing what to do with her hands.
“President Wen, could you get down now?”
Chi Yi’s heart pounded loudly in her chest. Wen Ranqing slowly rose, steadying herself with the armrest of the chair. The joy in her eyes slipped out unconsciously, and she clutched the jacket Chi Yi had draped over her shoulders a little tighter.
“Xiao Yi… could you wait a bit before you go? I have something I want to give you.”
Dr. An Li, now wearing a face mask, entered the room after getting permission.
As soon as she stepped in, she was met with the overwhelming scent of concentrated florals mixed with a faint trace of whiskey — exactly as she’d expected. With the mask on, she couldn’t smell it directly. She greeted Chi Yi with a curt nod.
“Hello, Miss Chi. This is for you. I’ll have to ask you to leave the room for a moment.”
An Li was Wen Ranqing’s personal doctor. She and Chi Yi had met several times before, but each time had left Chi Yi with the distinct impression that the woman wasn’t particularly friendly.
Chi Yi took the familiar brand of suppressant from her hand, raised an eyebrow slightly, then gave Wen Ranqing a glance before walking into the bathroom and pulling the door shut behind her.
It took her a moment to come back to her senses — Wen Ranqing’s gentle smile had left her in a bit of a daze.
When she finally looked up at herself in the mirror, she saw a vacant expression staring back. Her brows pinched together slightly. Then, without another word, she injected the suppressant.
