The White Moonlight Who Went Mad in Silence [Rebirth] - Chapter 11
The ride back was quiet and somewhat tense. Ming Lan rested her chin on her hand, staring out the car window in a daze. She wasn’t used to interacting with people. Because of her poor health since childhood, she had limited contact with others and often spent time alone. She didn’t have the energy to try making friends.
She only became close with Li Jue and the others because they took the initiative to approach her. Li Jue used to be her neighbor. They would run into each other all the time. Bai Tingqiu was from a family that had ties with the Ming family. Since he was neglected by both his parents, he spent more time at the Ming home than his own. As for Xiao Shaoyan, he showed up in her life after she saved him once, and after that, he clung to her persistently and tried to make himself noticed whenever he could.
When she finally began to treat them as real friends, the result was only hurt and disappointment.
The more she thought about it, the more upset she became. Ming Lan closed her eyes and took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. There was no need to rush. She would take things slowly.
While Ming Lan was lost in thought, Yi An was watching her from the corner of her eye. She started to reflect on whether she had been too harsh earlier. Ming Lan only wanted to be kind to her. If she felt uncomfortable, it was because she was too sensitive. That wasn’t Ming Lan’s fault.
When she saw Ming Lan take a deep breath and close her eyes, Yi An felt a wave of regret. Maybe it would be best to let Ming Lan do what made her happy.
Just as she was wondering how to make up for her attitude, her phone rang. She glanced at the screen. It was her supervisor from work.
Ming Lan looked over as Yi An answered the call.
“Do you know what time it is? Where are you?”
Yi An frowned slightly at the phone. “It’s Saturday.”
“Do you think that means you don’t need to work? You know how tight the schedule is for this project and how important it is. Do you even want this job? I don’t care where you are right now. Get to the office immediately.”
The call ended without giving her a chance to reply.
The voice on the other end had been so loud that even Ming Lan could hear it clearly. She looked at Yi An, noticing the tension in her expression. Ming Lan wanted to tell her to quit. She could come work at Qinglan Group instead. But the situation wasn’t that simple. Yi An was the lost heir of the Ye family. She had only been found because of her connection to them. If Ming Lan encouraged her to quit, it might disrupt everything that was supposed to follow.
Besides, Yi An had just told her that friends shouldn’t treat each other that way. Maybe she didn’t want to rely on Ming Lan at all.
“I’ll take you to the office,” Ming Lan said to Yi An.
“But what about you? You’ll be home alone,” Yi An said, looking at her with concern.
“It’s fine. It’s just for the afternoon. I’ll read through some company materials and get more familiar with the work.”
Yi An couldn’t argue. When the car stopped in front of Ye Group headquarters, she gave Ming Lan a few instructions. Don’t move around too much. Be careful at home. She would come back as early as she could.
“Don’t worry. I’m not a child,” Ming Lan said, waving as the car pulled away.
As her car merged into traffic and Yi An turned toward the building, a black luxury car quietly parked nearby. Yi An didn’t glance at it and walked straight inside. She didn’t notice the back window slowly rolling down. Inside sat an elderly man with gray hair. It was Master Ye.
“Find out who she is,” he said in a calm but firm voice.
He watched Yi An disappear from sight. His eyes, which had shown no emotion for many years, now revealed rare traces of shock and sorrow.
By the time he reached the top floor of the building, Yi An’s file was already waiting on his desk.
At her workstation, Yi An ignored the cold stare of her supervisor and turned on her computer. The work itself wasn’t difficult for her, but there was just too much of it.
As her fingers moved across the keyboard, she noticed that many of the tasks were pointless. There were clearly more efficient ways to do them. But she remembered that her supervisor lacked vision. Even if she finished the work quickly, he would find another excuse to make her stay late.
She propped her chin on her hand and looked at the screen. Since the work wasn’t urgent, she decided to focus on something else. She recalled a memory from her past life. During her time overseas, when she was being trained, she had designed a program during her spare time. She still remembered it clearly.
Maybe she could use this to test whether her memories were real. If she could create that program again, it would not only prove her memories were accurate but also result in something valuable.
She glanced at her supervisor’s desk, then switched her screen and quietly started working on her own project.
She had just begun when someone came in quickly to announce a surprise medical screening. The whole company would go through it, one department at a time. They were first.
This wasn’t unusual, so most people didn’t react. But Yi An realized something. This event had also appeared in her memories. And based on the timing, it had happened earlier than expected.
She was about to find out whether everything was real.
Yi An stood and followed the others to get ready for the screening. This time, she paid close attention to everything. She noticed the nurse drawing her bl00d paused when she saw Yi An’s name, then looked up at her carefully before inserting the needle.
Each person had several vials of bl00d drawn, using tubes with different colors. But Yi An noticed that she had one more tube taken than the others.
Some things were starting to become clear. After the bl00d draw, she pressed a cotton ball to her arm and got up. Now, she just had to wait for the results. There was still a lot she needed to do once the truth came out.
Back at home, Ming Lan didn’t waste her time either. After going through the company documents, she began reviewing recent news. In her previous life, she had paid too little attention to these matters. Now, she had a lot of catching up to do.
Just as she was reading, her phone rang. It was a call from Fang Yixing.
She didn’t expect him to be working on the weekend too. Ming Lan answered and turned the news volume down.
“Uncle Fang,” she said.
Fang Yixing’s voice was serious as he told her the results of the investigation into Director Zhang from the Finance Department. His tone carried a sense of guilt.
“It was my fault. I trusted the wrong person all these years. I nearly made a terrible mistake.”
“This isn’t your fault, Uncle Fang. After all, he was someone who made great contributions to the company in the past. It’s just that money can tempt the heart. Sometimes, we have to stay alert,” Ming Lan said gently to comfort him. “So, what do you plan to do next?”
“Now that we’ve started, we should take this opportunity to clean up the company properly. But we’re also at a stage where we urgently need people. It’s really not easy to manage right now.”
Fang Yixing had already assumed that Ming Lan was placed in the company by the former chairman. Naturally, his attitude had changed. He no longer treated her as a junior, but instead subtly sought her opinions during their conversation.
“You’re right, Uncle Fang. This all needs to be taken into account. There’s no rush to carry out a full purge. What we’re doing now is sending a warning to shake up those with bad intentions. Let them stay nervous for a while. For now, we hold our position. I noticed that the company’s next step involves business expansion. This is a perfect opportunity to recruit new talent. Once we’ve built up a strong enough team, we can evaluate the situation and proceed with restructuring. What do you think?”
Ming Lan didn’t want to act too hastily. Everything had to be grounded in reality. She could also sense the concern in Fang Yixing’s tone, so she followed his lead and gave a moderate response.
As expected, Fang Yixing felt relieved when he heard this. As long as Ming Lan didn’t think he was trying to cover up the issue or handle it carelessly, then everything was fine. “I think the same. Right now, the company’s development should be our main priority.”
The two of them spoke briefly about Ming Lan officially starting work on Monday. Just as they were talking, she heard the sound of the door opening. Turning around, she saw Yi An coming back.
“Then let’s meet on Monday, Uncle Fang,” Ming Lan said before ending the call and watching Yi An take off her shoes and walk over.
Ming Lan glanced at the time. Yi An had finished work right on time today, and it was still quite early.
“What do you want for dinner? I haven’t ordered anything yet.”
“I noticed this morning that there are still some groceries in the fridge. Let me cook tonight. No need to order in.”
As Yi An spoke, she went to wash her hands, then came back with the medicine to tend to Ming Lan’s injury. Her palm gently rested on Ming Lan’s ankle. The medical examination had been completed today, and the results should come soon. If everything unfolded as it did in her memories, then her return to the Ye family was not far away.
There was no excitement in her heart. Yi An knew what awaited her if she returned to the Ye family. The first thing she would lose was her freedom. Before she resolved the problems at hand, even seeing Ming Lan again would become difficult.
Ming Lan felt like Yi An was taking longer than usual to apply the medicine. Her foot shifted uncomfortably, but Yi An gently held it in place.
“Did I hurt you?” Yi An asked softly.
“No, I just wanted to see if it still hurts,” Ming Lan replied. Her foot remained in Yi An’s hand as their eyes met. For some reason, her heartbeat quickened. She quickly looked away and pretended to focus on the news, trying to act casual.
Yi An watched the side of her face and slowly released her ankle. She silently hoped the test results would take longer to arrive. At least until Ming Lan’s foot had fully healed. Otherwise, how would she manage if no one was there to help her with the medicine?
Unfortunately, things didn’t always go as hoped. The weekend passed in a flash. On Monday morning, since Ming Lan also needed to go to the company, they left together, and she dropped Yi An off on the way.
After getting out of the car, Yi An waved to Ming Lan, then turned and walked into the building. Just after clocking in and before she could sit at her desk, the secretary to the chairman appeared in front of her.
Under the shocked and curious stares of her coworkers, Yi An remained calm. She had known this moment would come sooner or later.
The memories from her previous life had now been fully confirmed. She adjusted her clothes, then followed the secretary to the chairman’s top-floor office, just like she had done in the past.
At the same time, Ming Lan was also on her way to the top floor of the Qinglan Group building. She was seated in a wheelchair, being pushed by Fang Yixing, heading into the executive meeting room.
