- The White Moonlight Who Went Mad in Silence [Rebirth]
- Chapter 13 - She Will Always Remember
On the top floor of Ye Group, Yi An stood alone in the center of the spacious office. Outside the tall floor-to-ceiling windows, the sun shone brightly overhead. Her eyes were lowered slightly as she listened to the exact same words she had heard in her past life. The familiarity of it all made everything around her feel unreal. The dazzling sunlight blurred her vision and stirred her emotions, leaving her slightly disoriented. But then, clarity came sharply and suddenly.
The fog that had clouded her memory was now gone. Every moment she had relived became vivid and undeniable. It was as if she had awoken from a long dream. The weight of reality settled in. She now fully accepted the truth—she had been reborn.
The two people sitting across from her looked at her with puzzled expressions. Yi An steadied her rapidly beating heart and took a slow, deep breath.
“This news truly caught me off guard,” she said softly. “I need some time to process it.”
“Of course,” said Chairman Ye, who was already over ninety years old. He stood slowly with the help of his cane and held a photo album in his hands. He led Yi An to the sofa and motioned for her to sit beside him.
“These are photos of your parents. You really look like them. If you are willing, I hope you will return to the Ye family.”
Yi An took the album from him and opened it. The people in the photos were young, probably in their twenties. It looked like a wedding album. In one photo, a handwritten label in the corner read “Mr. Ye and Miss Lin.” The couple appeared close and loving in every picture. Their emotions were sincere and clear.
What struck her most was how much she resembled them. Her facial features mirrored Mr. Ye’s, and her face shape was identical to Miss Lin’s. It was no wonder Chairman Ye had recognized her instantly.
Yi An had flipped through this photo album in her past life, but even now, looking at it again, her heart remained uneasy. Near the end of the album, she saw a photo of Miss Lin in a flowing white dress, visibly seven or eight months pregnant. Beside her, Mr. Ye had one arm around her waist as they looked at each other and smiled. Yi An even remembered what was written on the back of that photo—a message filled with hope for their unborn child.
The final image showed the couple in a hospital room, holding a newborn wrapped in a soft blanket. The baby was fast asleep, while the young parents each held a toy and smiled at the camera. The photo had been taken casually, but it captured warmth and happiness.
“It has been more than twenty years,” said Chairman Ye as his eyes rested on Yi An. “I never believed you died in that car crash with your parents. Heaven has finally answered my prayers. Now, as my days grow shorter, I have found you at last.”
His voice trembled slightly, and though he tried to remain composed, the sorrow in his heart was impossible to hide.
Chairman Ye had faced many hardships. After his family lost everything in his youth, he had built his business from nothing. His wife passed away young, leaving behind only one son. He raised his son alone and eventually built Ye Group into a powerful corporation. His son married and had a child, and for a brief time, life was full of joy.
But just when he was ready to retire and pass down the family legacy, disaster struck. His son and daughter-in-law died in an accident. Their young child vanished without a trace. He was left completely alone.
Most people would have collapsed under the weight of such tragedy. But Chairman Ye endured for more than two decades, holding on to the hope that one day he would find his great-granddaughter. He had nearly given up. But in the end, fate brought her back to him.
When Yi An closed the album, Chairman Ye had already shared everything with her. He looked at her with deep emotion.
“You must have suffered so much over the years. Please, come home.”
After confirming her identity through a DNA test using her parents’ preserved samples, Chairman Ye had thoroughly investigated her background. He knew how difficult her life had been.
Her parents had died in City A, but somehow Yi An—barely a year old—was later adopted by a small, obscure orphanage in N City. Clearly, something was wrong with that story, but uncovering the truth would take time. For now, all Chairman Ye wanted was to bring his great-granddaughter back home.
Yi An gently traced the cover of the album with her fingertips. After a long silence, she nodded.
“Alright.”
Her answer was calm. As she spoke, her eyes briefly shifted toward the man who had been standing quietly on the side. He had tried to appear invisible. His tears had not yet dried, but the faint twitch at the corner of his mouth revealed his true thoughts.
Chairman Ye’s family had experienced one disaster after another. Twenty years ago, when it looked like the family line might end, many of his extended relatives had seen an opportunity and began trying to gain favor. Among them was his brother’s son, who was now the acting president of Ye Group.
These people had long viewed Ye Group as their own. For years they worked hard, believing that once the old man was gone, everything would fall into their hands. But Chairman Ye had lived on into his nineties and now had found his true heir.
Yi An had no doubt that many people would have sleepless nights ahead.
None of that mattered. What mattered was that Chairman Ye’s expression brightened the moment she agreed to return. His mood lifted, and he clapped his hands joyfully.
“Excellent. Excellent. Excellent. Send out invitations. Prepare a grand banquet. Invite everyone we can. Tomorrow evening, I want the world to know that my great-granddaughter has returned.”
“Yes. I will take care of it right away. This is a celebration worth remembering,” the current president said.
As he lowered his head in agreement, he glanced at Yi An. She looked back at him with a calm gaze and smiled politely, giving him a slight nod. That one gesture made cold sweat run down his back.
He had good reason to be afraid.
Yi An looked at this man and thought back to her past life. If it had not been for him constantly creating obstacles and sending her overseas, she would not have been delayed in taking over the Ye family. She would not have learned about Ming Lan’s tragedy too late. And by the time she returned, everything had already fallen apart.
It was also him who had later joined forces with Li Jue and others, leading to the mysterious death of Chairman Ye. She had been declared illegitimate and stripped of her inheritance, forced out of the Ye family with nothing. She and Ming Lan had spent their days wandering, while the ones who had stolen everything lived in luxury.
But now, she had been given a second chance. This time, she would not let things go that way.
Their eyes met only for a second before Yi An turned away. She stood beside Chairman Ye, ready to go home with him.
As the president moved to follow them, Chairman Ye turned and tapped his cane against the floor.
“You have meetings to attend. Stay here.”
“Yes, sir.”
He could only stand there and watch them leave. Not even the faintest trace of dissatisfaction dared show on his face.
Yi An was not the same naive girl from before. She was no longer confused and powerless. She would not be manipulated or silenced. She had lived one life already, and this time, she knew how to fight back.
As she sat in the car on the way to the Ye family estate, her gaze passed over the towering building of Qinglan Group. She wondered whether Ming Lan had finished work yet.
While Yi An looked out the window, Chairman Ye watched her quietly. From the moment she received the DNA results until now, she had remained remarkably calm. Aside from a brief moment of disorientation, she had shown no major reaction. For someone so young, her maturity was unusual.
“Xiao An, life has not been fair to you. If there is anything you want, tell me. I will do my best to give it to you.”
Yi An turned to look at him and shook her head.
“I can support myself now. I do not need anything. What I wanted most, I have already found. Even though my parents are no longer here, I know they never abandoned me. What they gave me is no less than what anyone else receives. And you never stopped looking for me. I got to meet my last living family member. How could I not be grateful?”
Chairman Ye stared at her, momentarily speechless. Her eyes were clear and sincere. He believed every word.
Yi An truly meant it. She had always been grateful to him. As for the rest of the Ye family, she did not see them as relatives.
He reached out and gently patted her shoulder.
“You are a child of the Ye family. From now on, it will be just the two of us.”
“Then you must live a long life. Without you, there would be no point in me coming back.”
In her previous life, Yi An had barely spoken a word to him. She had been too timid to even meet his gaze. Back then, she had been like a puppet with no voice of her own.
Now, everything was different.
Chairman Ye smiled faintly. Thinking about the mess back at home, his eyes briefly turned cold. But when he looked at Yi An again, his expression softened.
“Then I will be like an old turtle and live forever.”
His lighthearted words brought warmth to the car. Yi An looked at the white-haired man beside her and felt for the first time that her world was starting to change.
At Qinglan Group, Ming Lan finally made it to the end of the workday. She quickly sent Yi An a message to ask when she would be off so they could go home together.
Yi An heard her phone vibrates while sitting across from Chairman Ye, enjoying a cup of tea. She glanced at the screen, and her heart softened.
She had grown up without a home. Now, there were two people waiting for her.
A warm smile appeared on her face as she picked up the phone and replied.
Almost done. Wait for me half an hour.
Alright. I will meet you downstairs.
Chairman Ye noticed her change in expression. Curious, he slowed his hand as he stirred the tea.
“Xiao An, who are you messaging?”
Yi An looked up and answered calmly.
“A friend. She is waiting for me to get off work. I have been staying at her place these past few days.”
After glancing at the time, Yi An stood up.
“Great-grandfather, I’ll head back to the company now. Everything that happened today was so sudden, I haven’t had the chance to explain it to her yet.”
“Let the driver and a bodyguard go with you. They can help move your things while they’re at it,” the old man suggested with concern, suddenly feeling uneasy. He wondered whether the investigators had done a thorough job—could they have missed the possibility that Yi An might have someone close to her?
“It’s already quite late. There’s no need to rush. I’ll stay one more night at her place and move tomorrow.”
To be honest, Yi An didn’t have much to pack. What she really needed was time—to tell Ming Lan everything. She also needed to go back to her rental place and tidy things up.
Thinking of the rental place made her remember Cheng Yurong. That situation was… complicated. Better to leave it for later.
Her thoughts shifted quickly. Yi An said goodbye to the old man and headed out. A driver was already waiting outside. Even if she wasn’t moving just yet, she still needed someone to drive her.
When they arrived downstairs at Ye Group’s building, Yi An immediately spotted Ming Lan’s car.
Ming Lan was looking toward the building, waiting for Yi An, when she unexpectedly saw her step out of a luxury car. With one glance, Ming Lan understood.
Yi An had been recognized by the Ye family.
This day had come sooner than expected. As Yi An opened the door and got into the car, Ming Lan did her best to act as if she didn’t know anything.
“Did you go out?” she asked casually.
“It’s a long story. Let’s go home first, and I’ll explain everything,” Yi An replied.
She waved to the Ye family driver to dismiss him, then shut the car door.
When Yi An turned back to look at Ming Lan, her emotions were far from calm. The memories she had once dismissed as dreams had become real. Now that she had fully experienced everything again, her feelings were raw and overwhelming. Looking at Ming Lan now felt like a moment from another life.
Ming Lan noticed the strange look in Yi An’s eyes. She thought Yi An might be about to say something, but instead, Yi An simply came forward, eyes red, and embraced her tightly.
That was all Ming Lan needed to know. Yi An had definitely learned the truth about her own background. Otherwise, with how composed she usually was, how could she have lost control like this?
It was only human. Ming Lan hugged her back gently, soothing her by patting her back. Even though Yi An was holding her a little too tightly, she said nothing and waited patiently for her to calm down.
The drive from the company to home wasn’t long, but due to traffic, it took a little longer than usual. Still, Yi An didn’t let go. It wasn’t until Ming Lan felt like she was struggling to breathe that she gently tapped Yi An’s arm. Yi An finally released her grip, allowing Ming Lan to take a breath.
Yi An realized she had gone too far. She looked at Ming Lan with concern.
“Did I hurt you?”
When Ming Lan saw Yi An’s red eyes, her heart softened even more. She reached out and pulled her into another hug.
“No. I just wanted to check if you were alright.”
Yi An leaned into her quietly, this time wrapping her arms gently around Ming Lan’s waist.
“I’m fine. I just lost control of my emotions for a bit. I’m sorry.”
“You don’t need to apologize to me. Let’s go home first.”
They arrived downstairs. As they got out of the car, Ming Lan didn’t forget to gently hold Yi An’s trembling hand as she pushed her wheelchair. Her touch helped Yi An slowly relax.
When they finally made it upstairs, Yi An helped settle Ming Lan down, then took a deep breath to compose herself before sitting beside her and beginning to speak.
She told Ming Lan everything that had happened that day.
Of course, Ming Lan already knew much of it. But this was the first time she had heard it in such detail, especially coming from Yi An’s own mouth. When Yi An talked about the photo album, Ming Lan couldn’t help but feel her eyes sting. She knew all too well what it was like to feel completely alone in the world.
She reached out and cupped Yi An’s face in her hands. For a moment, she didn’t know what to say. No words felt meaningful enough. Finding family again should have been a joyful thing, but for Yi An, it also came with pain. That joy quickly turned into sorrow. It was like losing her loved ones all over again. Ming Lan could only imagine how deeply it must have hurt.
They sat very close together. Yi An could clearly see her reflection in Ming Lan’s eyes, eyes filled with concern and tenderness. She knew Ming Lan had always been soft-hearted and was probably hurting on her behalf now. Yi An couldn’t help but offer comfort in return.
“Don’t cry. It’s alright. I’ve gotten used to it.”
That simple statement only made Ming Lan feel more heartache. She held Yi An tightly.
“Everything will get better. From now on, you have me.”
“Okay,” Yi An replied softly, burying her face in Ming Lan’s shoulder to hide her emotions.
In her heart, she knew she would always remember these words.
