- Chapter 12: - Becoming the Shamaness in the Beastman World
Becoming the Shamaness in the Beastman World
As Xue spoke, a bold idea flickered through Bai Yue’s mind.
If the Beast God was the supreme deity of this world,
didn’t that mean no one would dare question her if she claimed to be His messenger?
She could actually live like a divine shaman here.
And if she became one, who could say who would be burned next time her or her accusers?
The thought made her bl00d hum. She lowered her gaze to hide the
spark of excitement in her eyes and nodded calmly.
Then I’ll meet them.
Good. I’ll tell the others right away, Xue said with relief, her shoulders loosening.
That simple yes meant Bai Yue no longer held a grudge.
Where’s Bafeng? Bai Yue asked when she noticed he wasn’t around.
Xue pointed up toward the rocky ledge above the cave. He’s being punished.
Punished?
He said he did something wrong this morning and asked me to tie a stone to his back.
He’s been up there all day, standing under the sun the
same punishment he used to get whenever he angered the witch doctor.
Did something wrong.
Bai Yue pressed her lips together. Was he talking about their fight that morning?
She didn’t go after him. Instead, she sat down in the cave and
finished every bite of the meal Xue had brought.
Maybe it was because she’d been here over a week now,
but her body was finally adjusting to this world. Her appetite had grown frighteningly so.
She ate more with each passing day, her belly softening beneath her hand.
Another few minutes passed. The last sliver of sunlight vanished beyond the horizon.
She stepped outside and tilted her head up. So late, and still not down yet?
A faint noise came from above. Then, with a heavy thud, a figure leapt down from the cliff
a beastman carrying a boulder three times his size.
Every movement made the rock shift precariously on his back.
Bai Yue winced, half expecting him to be crushed.
Aren’t you afraid of falling? she asked carefully.
Not afraid, Bafeng panted, his chest heaving.
The sun had scorched his skin several shades darker,
and his bare shoulders glistened with sweat.
His breath carried heat, wild and alive.
He blinked once, water clinging to his lashes, then held out several gleaming spirit stones to her.
I’m sorry, he said. I misunderstood you this morning. I came to apologize properly.
After learning that Bai Yue had saved so many, he’d realized how wrong he’d been.
But when he’d returned to the cave, she’d already been asleep.
So instead of waking her, he’d punished himself first.
There were five stones in his hand, mostly blue-green.
Bai Yue took them, raising a brow. Planning to give me spirit stones every time you upset me?
The black-haired beastman scratched his head, looking embarrassed.
Can’t. Don’t have that many left.
Bai Yue laughed a soft, genuine laugh that made her eyes curve like crescent moons,
reflecting his tall shadow in their light.
Still smiling, she said, I’m a very petty beastman, you know.
Just apologizing isn’t enough to earn forgiveness. Otherwise, I’d lose all face.
Bafeng tilted his head, frowning as he thought hard about her words.
After a long pause, something flicked atop his head two black,
furry ears popped out from his dark hair.
And beneath them, his face turned crimson.
He’d heard other males say females loved soft fur. Maybe… maybe this would make her smile again.
He didn’t know if it would work.
It worked perfectly.
Bai Yue fought the urge for a few seconds and lost.
She tucked the spirit stones into her system space,
then stepped closer and reached up to touch his ears.
They twitched beneath her fingers, and the great black wolfman shivered
like a toy with a hidden switch.
Bafeng, she asked while running her hand over them, what kind of beastman are you, anyway?
Her touch was anything but gentle. She kneaded, tugged,
and explored as if she were testing the quality of the fur itself.
Bafeng could hardly breathe. The tingling shot down from his ears,
crawling over his skin like invisible sparks, making every nerve hum.
I… he tried to speak, but his voice caught in his throat.
Before he could form the words, something swished out behind him a long,
black tail flicking in the air.
Bai Yue’s eyes lit up. So you’re a black dog, then?
Dog?
His face darkened instantly. Wolf, he corrected stiffly.
Wolf? She squinted at him, taking a few steps back to inspect him from head to toe.
Doesn’t look like it. I’ve never seen a wolf that looks so… earnest.
For a wolf, being mistaken for a dog was an insult worse than death.
Especially for a wolf king.
Bafeng didn’t argue. Instead, he simply shifted.
In the blink of an eye, a massive black wolf stood before her over three meters long,
its muscles rippling under midnight fur.
Its eyes were as large as her fists, burning with primal light.
All the humor drained from Bai Yue’s face. The thing in front of her wasn’t cute anymore.
It was terrifying.
She couldn’t even move.
He looked too real too much like an actual predator that could swallow her whole.
Sensing her fear, the wolf lowered itself. Its body shrank, smaller and smaller,
until the towering beast became a soft, palm-sized cub.
The suffocating pressure vanished with it.
So you really are a wolf, she murmured, more to fill the silence than anything.
The little wolf padded over and rubbed against her leg,
letting out a gentle howl that sounded almost apologetic.
White foxes and black wolves didn’t share the same beast language,
so Bai Yue had no idea what he was saying though his eyes made it clear enough.
Don’t be afraid.
Alright, alright, I get it, she sighed, scooping him up.
Her tone was half-hearted, but her hands weren’t.
She rubbed the small wolf’s head with the enthusiasm of someone kneading dough.
Still, the misunderstanding between them had finally dissolved thanks to
Bafeng’s rather creative effort.
The sun set. Then rose again.
The next morning, the hunting party still hadn’t returned,
but the day dawned bright and golden perfect for foraging.
Outside Bai Yue’s cave, a group of females had already gathered in a nervous circle.
They didn’t dare speak. Bafeng sat by the entrance like a dark guardian,
his aura enough to silence anyone who might have disturbed her.
Compared to the graceful white fox males, this black wolf was rough, intimidating
and fiercely protective.
So when Bai Yue finally stepped out, rubbing her eyes, she was met by rows of anxious faces.
The moment they saw her, they all exhaled in relief.
Bai Yue, you’re awake!
We’re going up the mountain to pick sweet fruits will you come with us?
The chatter rose all at once five or six voices overlapping in a jumble of
excitement she could barely untangle.
