Al, the Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing
The sound of quickened breathing reached the beastman in the lake.
In an instant, his head snapped around.
Bai Yue let out a strangled yelp and fell backward into the tall grass.
She didn’t dare look at him didn’t even breathe properly before spinning on her heel to run.
Except she ran straight into his chest.
Pain flared across her forehead.
Ow! That hurt!
Wait could he teleport?!
A low, velvety voice slid into her ears, smooth as honey and just as dangerous.
Where did this little pervert come from?
The tone alone made her skin tingle.
Bai Yue felt her face heat with embarrassment. I—I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to intrude!
she stammered, covering her face. Not because she was ashamed… but because
she’d seen far too much.
Hmm? The beastman stepped closer, unhurried.
He wrapped a piece of hide loosely around his waist,
muscles shifting beneath sunlit skin. The light caught the ridges of his abs,
every line moving like a wave.
Such a big lake, and yet you came right here? Hard to believe that was an accident.
Bai Yue’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. Her face was on fire.
He bent slightly, using the wooden stick in his hand as a prop,
meeting her eyes with a teasing grin. Why so quiet? Haven’t seen enough yet?
Bai Yue snapped her head up, finding her courage from nowhere.
Excuse me?! Maybe you’re the shameless one! Who bathes in broad daylight?!
If she was going to be humiliated, she might as well drag him into it.
No way was she taking all the blame for this disaster.
The beastman raised a brow but said nothing, clearly amused by her defiance.
Then, as she looked properly at him, Bai Yue froze.
Wait… she knew that face.
So it’s you, Bai Yue of the White Fox Tribe, he said with a smirk.
No wonder I didn’t recognize you before. I never realized the fox tribe
had someone quite this… bold.
His tone dripped with mockery. He lifted his stick like a walking staff.
Come on. I’ll take you back to the tribe.
Bai Yue’s ears twitched. Her lips parted, but no words came out.
She just nodded and followed behind him, too afraid of getting lost again.
Who could she even explain this to?
A few days ago, she was a college student. Now she was a time-traveler… and a peeping tom.
There was simply no coming back from that.
After walking for a while and finally cooling her cheeks, Bai Yue dared to ask,
Al, what are you doing here?
Exactly what you saw. Bathing.
Bai Yue stared. I didn’t mean that.
Then what did you mean?
She took a deep breath. I mean, why are you still in the White Fox Tribe?
You’re from the Eagle Clan, aren’t you?
Ah? He raised a brow, pretending surprise. You remember that? I thought you’d forgotten.
You’re not the same Al I met before, are you? she asked suspiciously.
In her memory, he’d been quiet and honest the kind of man people called “dependable.”
Not this… flirt with a smirk and abs that gleamed like sin.
Of course I’m the same, he said lazily, but the words were cut off as rain began to fall.
Al tilted his head back. The sky had been perfectly clear seconds ago.
Where had the storm come from?
Still, he plucked a large leaf and held it over her head like an umbrella.
Rain’s getting worse. We should find shelter.
Can’t we just head back to the tribe? It’s just rain.
Too far, he said and as if to prove his point, the drizzle turned instantly into a downpour.
Within seconds, Bai Yue was soaked through, the hide clinging to her skin.
They ran through the storm, splashing mud and water,
until they finally spotted a cave barely big enough to crawl into.
Bai Yue collapsed just inside, coughing and panting. I can’t… I can’t run anymore.
You really need to train, Al said flatly. With stamina that poor,
if a beast tide came, you’d be the first to end up as someone’s dinner.
Bai Yue’s eye twitched. In the stories, this was when the hero carried the
heroine bridal-style to safety.
So she asked bluntly, Aren’t you supposed to carry me or something?
He smirked. Are you asking me to be your beast-mate?
Bai Yue rolled her eyes. Forget it. Don’t answer.
He chuckled softly, then added, I’d protect you but only if I were your beast-mate.
She leaned back against the wall, choosing not to reply.
His gaze flicked over her the drenched hair, the wet hide clinging to her form
and his expression darkened slightly.
Take off the hide.
What?! Bai Yue’s face drained of color. She clutched the hide to her chest like a shield.
What are you trying to do? I’m from the White Fox Tribe!
Realization dawned on his face. That sounded… very wrong.
He raised both hands in surrender. I meant, I’m a Wind-Spirit Beastman.
Take it off and I’ll dry it for you.
A Wind-Spirit someone who could control the air itself.
Bai Yue eyed him suspiciously. She didn’t trust him one bit… but being drenched was miserable.
Fine, she said after a pause, but dry my hair first.
Deal.
He moved behind her, gathering her damp silver-white hair in one large hand.
White Foxes usually had pure white hair, but hers shimmered faintly silver
soft, luminous, and far too easy to stare at.
As he lifted the strands, something at the base of her neck caught his eye
a small white fox mark, glowing faintly against her skin.
A beastmark.
She already had a mate? A White Fox male?
No… wait.
That mark the red dot between the brows…
The Witch Doctor.
So he was her beast-mate.
Al’s lips curled into a silent smile. How amusing.
Karme’s little schemes were getting more and more interesting.
A warm breeze stirred, brushing against Bai Yue’s neck as
Al controlled the air with precision, drying her hair while
keeping the temperature perfectly comfortable.
Within moments, her hair was soft and dry again.
Thanks, she murmured, shaking it loose. It felt good to be warm again.
You’re welcome. He leaned against the cave wall beside her,
half a meter of polite distance between them.
So, why did Bafeng let you go up the mountain alone?
I wasn’t alone. We were picking sweet fruits all the females from the tribe.
And where are the others?
She scratched her head. I got lost.
You really like those sweet fruits? he asked, amused.
Of course! she grinned. I like all kinds of food. In a world without internet or TV,
sweets were all she had to live for.
What else do you like?
Bai Yue perked up immediately, pulling out a handful of things from her mysterious “space.”
This! And this! And this too!
Her hand waved over a small pile of spices and roots ingredients that hadn’t existed in this world.
Al didn’t even flinch at her conjuring trick.
He simply smiled knowingly.
So, she really had received the Beast God’s blessing.
No wonder the entire White Fox Tribe had been wary of him since yesterday.
