 - CHAPTER 2 - Ran Into the Original Heroine

Days of eating her fill but never truly resting made Bai Yue regret clicking on that cursed novel all over again.
Ding Mission alert. Please accept the task, host.
What task?
Scan five different plants in this world. Once the mission is complete, you’ll be rewarded with one square meter of storage space. Scanned plants cannot be repeated.
Storage space?
At those words, Bai Yue lit up like a spark in dry grass.
Now that, she understood.
The laws of transmigration never failed every world traveler got a golden cheat sooner or later.
Let’s go, let’s go! she said eagerly to her system, already striding toward the cave entrance.
Unfortunately, her adventure ended before it began. Standing outside was Bafeng, blocking the way like a wall of muscle.
The witch doctor forbids you to leave, he said flatly.
Her jaw dropped.
What, does he own my legs now?
Bafeng simply lifted one massive fist, the size of her head, and she instantly deflated.
Her smile turned painfully polite. No need to get all worked up, big guy. I wasn’t really leaving. Just stretching my legs. Very friendly of you, really.
With that, she spun on her heel and marched back inside, muttering curses under her breath.
Bafeng watched her go, expression unreadable. What a strange and noisy female, he thought. Exactly as the witch doctor described.
Back in the cave, Bai Yue kicked the stone table in frustration. She immediately regretted it barefoot, of course, and pain shot straight up her leg.
Host, host, what if we climb out?
Climb out? she frowned. Bafeng’s guarding the entrance.
Not that way. There’s a small hole above the side wall. You can crawl through it.
Really?
Absolutely.
And so, with the system’s help, Bai Yue successfully snuck out of the cave.
Outside, she scanned five different plants, loading them into her mind and earning herself one glorious square meter of space.
It wasn’t much, but enough to stash a few essentials.
Determined not to face the witch doctor again, she began to make her way down the mountain.
Technically, his cave was outside the White Fox Tribe’s main territory, but heading downhill meant safety no wild beasts dared approach that area.
She wandered and scanned as she went, collecting edible plants into her new storage space.
Her plan was simple: sneak down, sneak back up, no one the wiser.
Except she hadn’t even reached the bottom when someone caught her.
And not just anyone the original heroine herself.
The woman’s eyes widened in disbelief. Bai Yue? You’re alive?
No attempt at subtlety whatsoever. The disbelief on her face said it all. After all, in the original story, Bai Yue should’ve been a pile of bones by now.
Bai Yue calmly brushed off her hand and shot back, You’re the one who’s dead.
That snapped the heroine Kame back to her senses. She took two steps back, waving nervously. My mistake. I thought you were… a friend of mine.
Your friend also happens to be named Bai Yue? she replied dryly.
And just like that, Kame was cornered, speechless.
Before she could recover, a few other females wandered over.
Kame, you know Bai Yue? asked one with short white hair and a striking red mole under her eye an uncommon beauty among the pale-haired White Fox females.
Kame shook her head too quickly. Not really. She just looks like someone I used to know.
She had to cover her tracks. A foreign eagle-tribe female suddenly knowing someone from the White Fox tribe? That would raise questions she couldn’t answer.
The red-mole female smirked. Well, if she looks like someone you know, Bai Yue sure is lucky.
Bai Yue’s brows twitched.
Flattery for the heroine was fine, but dragging her down in the process? Unacceptable.
She rolled her eyes so dramatically that everyone could see. Then, just to make sure they didn’t miss it, she rolled them again, full circle.
Sorry, but I look like myself. Any other female who resembles me should be honored, not the other way around.
The original Bai Yue might’ve been brainless and mean, but no one could deny she was beautiful.
That was partly why she hadn’t been kicked out of the tribe despite all her troublemaking well, that and the fact that she was a female.
The short-haired one snorted. Talk all you want, but you still don’t have a beastman mate.
In the White Fox tribe, every adult female was expected to take a mate as soon as she came of age. Bai Yue had been an adult for half a year and was still single a scandal, in their eyes.
Of course, none of them would’ve guessed the real reason: she had her sights set on the witch doctor himself.
And what does that have to do with you? she shot back. Go enjoy your beast husband and leave me out of it.
That earned her a glare.
How does it not concern me? Without a mate, the tribe has to feed you. Our beastmen hunt every day, and you just freeload.
Ah. So it was about food.
She just couldn’t stand seeing Bai Yue eat the tribe’s rations and sometimes even steal the cubs’ share when she was in a bad mood.
Kame quickly stepped between them. Don’t say that, Yani. I’m sure Bai Yue has her reasons.
The last thing she needed was to be kicked out her first day here for stirring up drama.
Yani huffed. Reasons, my tail. She just wants free meals!
Bai Yue clenched her fists, fighting the urge to shout that she didn’t need their food she could live perfectly fine on her own.
But then she remembered the novel’s description of this world. Wild, dangerous, full of predators.
Nope. Not worth dying for pride.
She told herself it wasn’t cowardice it was adaptability.
The art of knowing when to fold.
Kame finally exhaled in relief as the tension eased.
By the way, Yani, do you know which cave the witch doctor lives in? she asked casually, pretending ignorance.
She already knew, of course, but couldn’t afford to look suspicious.
Yani frowned. Why are you asking about him?
I have something I need to ask, Kame said lightly.
In her last life, she hadn’t been here yet at this point. Back then, she’d been busy bonding with her chosen male. This time, things were already different.
The highest cave on the mountain, Yani replied at last, though she hesitated. But you shouldn’t bother him. The witch doctor has… a temper.
Kame forced a calm smile. I understand.
Yani didn’t buy it. That girl’s eyes were practically glued to the mountain already.
She turned again and caught Bai Yue staring at her with a gleam of gossip in her eyes.
What are you looking at? Think you can just stare at me like that?
Bai Yue blinked innocently.
Deciding she’d had enough drama for one day, she turned to leave—only for Yani to grab her arm.
Don’t move!
The pull came too fast. Bai Yue lost her balance completely, tumbling backward.
For a split second, the world spun.
Then a strong arm wrapped around her waist, a low voice murmuring against her ear rich and smooth, like aged wine.
Careful.
And just like that, her heart skipped a beat.
