What Exactly Is a Witch Doctor?
The night was still, almost unnervingly so, and danger seeped from every shadow.
Another sharp smack broke the silence as Bai Yue swatted yet another mosquito.
She frowned. Wasn’t snow supposed to fall soon? Why was it taking so long?
Just as she was thinking that, footsteps echoed from the distance.
Bai Yue jumped up, her voice barely above a whisper.
Is that you, Xue?
A deep male voice answered instead. It’s her.
Bai Yue’s body went rigid, pressing herself flat against the wall of the cave.
But then she saw that the male was carrying Xue on his back. Relief washed through her,
only to vanish when she noticed the bl00d trickling down Xue’s pale leg.
You’re hurt! Bai Yue rushed forward, wanting to help but not knowing where to start.
Xue motioned for the male to set her down. It’s nothing serious.
Bai Yue frowned. She might not have been the brightest,
but even she could tell that Xue’s wound was far from minor.
In the modern world, an injury like this would send someone straight to the hospital.
But here…
System, she called out in her mind, do you have any medicine?
No medicine, the system replied, but I can scan the wound and tell you which herbs will heal it.
That works. It wasn’t much, but it was something.
After the scan, Bai Yue crouched beside Xue. I can help you, she said softly.
Xue lifted her gaze, her eyes calm and unreadable. Go ahead.
Bai Yue blinked, surprised. She hadn’t expected Xue to agree so easily.
Quickly, she explained her plan, mentioning the use of herbs. Xue’s brow furrowed even deeper.
You know herbs?
The male beside her spoke before Xue could.
The voice drew Bai Yue’s attention. The man’s hair was white
he had to be a white fox beastman. He studied her wary expression and
suddenly remembered what his father had told him:
Bai Yue had fallen off a cliff once, and ever since, her head hadn’t been quite right.
He’d thought it was just a rumor. Now, he wasn’t so sure.
I’m Cang, a white fox orc. By seniority, you should call me Brother.
Brother? Bai Yue hesitated, sensing his good intentions. She tried the word out.
The way she said it confirmed his suspicions her head really was broken.
Before, she would’ve called him an idiot, not Brother.
Cough, yes, Brother’s here.
Brother, will you come up the mountain with me? Xue needs something to stop the bleeding.
Her gaze flicked to Xue’s leg, where the bl00d was still slowly seeping through.
The worry in her eyes didn’t escape him.
Moments earlier, the system had explained something to her:
female beastfolk were extremely fragile.
Without a male to protect and care for them, even minor injuries could be fatal.
Xue interrupted before Cang could reply.
No need. There are herbs inside this cave. See if you can use any.
After confirming with the system that nothing seemed amiss,
Bai Yue hurried inside. Even with the system’s help,
it took nearly ten minutes to gather everything she needed.
She ground the herbs with a stone, mixed them carefully, and applied the paste to Xue’s wound.
Within moments, the bleeding stopped.
Xue’s usually calm eyes widened slightly.
Such a quick and precise herbal mix even the witch doctor herself couldn’t do that.
You… she began, but never finished the question.
When no further words came, Bai Yue silently exhaled in relief.
If Xue had pressed her, she wouldn’t have known how to explain herself.
Xue, what happened? Bai Yue finally asked, hoping to understand
what had befallen the white fox tribe.
Xue didn’t hide it. The tribe was attacked by wandering beastmen.
Many of our females were taken.
Before Bai Yue could ask more, the system chimed in her mind.
Ding—new task: scan twenty unique plants. No duplicates allowed.
Reward: the location of the captured white fox females.
The location of the missing females?
Bai Yue’s stomach dropped. She understood instantly
those same wandering beastmen had taken them.
Remembering their cruelty from the novel she’d read, she shuddered.
Xue, trust me
Bai Yue. Xue’s voice cut in. We need your help.
Me? Bai Yue blinked, confused.
Yes. Xue nodded. Before the witch doctor left,
she said that if we ever faced something we didn’t understand, we should ask you.
You would give us the best answers. So please, help us.
Xue herself didn’t believe in Bai Yue’s abilities. No one in the white fox tribe did.
Bai Yue had once committed terrible acts just to bond with the witch doctor.
She had no credibility left.
But since the witch doctor herself had said so, Xue had no choice but to believe.
Bai Yue looked into Xue’s eyes and saw, for the first time, a faint glimmer of hope there.
Please, help us.
The white fox tribe was fragile compared to other races no strong bodies,
no powerful abilities, only one witch doctor born in each generation.
Against the fearless wandering beastmen, they barely stood a chance.
Bai Yue’s chest tightened. Strangely, she didn’t feel any urge to refuse.
I’ll help you. But first…
First what?
I need to find twenty different kinds of plants.
Plants? Why?
They’re offerings. For the Beast God.
Xue stared at her.
For a long moment, silence filled the cave.
She suddenly regretted everything had she really just placed her tribe’s hope in Bai Yue?
Everyone knew the Beast God didn’t eat plants.
Meanwhile, in the White Fox Tribe
Chaos reigned. The once-serene, herb-scented caves now lay in ruin.
Everything that couldn’t be stolen had been burned.
White fox beastmen lay crushed underfoot, groaning in pain.
No females were in sight only a few frightened cubs who hadn’t yet learned to transform.
A towering male stepped forward from the group of marauders.
Without a word, he swung his bone blade and sliced off one beastman’s hand.
The victim didn’t even get a chance to scream before his mouth was stuffed with mud.
The tall beastman grinned coldly. See that? Talk or you’ll end up like him.
One of the white fox beastmen spat bl00d and laughed.
Kill us if you want, but you’ll never find our females.
Go back to your filthy forest and keep dreaming, wanderer.
Wandering beastmen had no tribe. They lived in the wild unruly,
unwanted, untamed. The insult hit deep.
Good, the tall one said, voice thick with malice.
I like the ones who aren’t afraid to die. Makes killing you that much more fun.
He grabbed the beastman by the hair and pressed the blade against his neck.
The white fox beastman sneered. Then do it. Let me die as an offering to the Beast God.
And may the witch doctor curse you from the beyond.
His head rolled before the words had even faded.
Bl00d splattered across the tall beastman’s bare chest.
He wiped his face with a hand and laughed.
Witch doctor? What’s a witch doctor worth, anyway?
His arrogance echoed through the ruined tribe.
The remaining white fox beastmen, enraged by the blasphemy, rose up in defiance.
The air filled with the sound of bone striking bone, metal clashing against flesh.
From a hill nearby, a few other wanderers watched, amused.
Chief, should we kill them all? one asked.
A scarred male turned his head, sneering. What, you want to keep one for yourself?
No one dared to reply.
He turned away. Finish them. The one I’m looking for isn’t here.
