Saving the White Fox Females
Only one beastman followed Feng as he walked away.
The others stayed behind to deal with the captured white fox tribe.
Chief, who exactly are you looking for? The beastman behind him couldn’t hold back his question.
They had traveled all the way from the far north, from endless snowfields to
these forests where the seasons actually changed
yet their leader still hadn’t found whoever it was he sought.
He really couldn’t understand it.
Feng didn’t even glance back. If your mouth’s that useless, I can help you cut it off.
Violence always worked among beastmen.
The follower immediately shut up. He knew better one more word, and
Feng’s fist would be in his face.
Feng took a few more steps, then froze. His head snapped toward the left.
The totem on his chest was burning hot, pulsing as if alive.
The elder’s voice echoed in his memory, words spoken before Feng had left the tribe.
Only when your fated partner is near will your totem react.
We don’t know what form that reaction will take, but you’ll know it when it happens.
None of our people have ever found their bondmate, Feng. Go. Seek your destined beast.
The Beast God will guide you.
A bondmate.
Not every beastman on this continent was blessed by the Beast God.
Some races were simply… forgotten. Feng’s tribe was one of them.
They didn’t form bonds through ritual or divine blessing only by searching.
And for who, or where, they could never know.
For over twenty years, his totem had been silent. Now, for the first time, it blazed with life.
Without hesitation, Feng broke into a run, following the invisible pull in his chest.
He barely covered a few steps before a shadow stepped out from the darkness, blocking his path.
Feng lifted a hand and unleashed his power in an instant,
but the stranger dodged every attack effortlessly.
You’re not a white fox beastman, Feng said coolly, eyes narrowing.
I’d advise you not to meddle, unless you want to die here too.
The only reply was fire—thick, roaring, the width of a tree trunk.
Feng’s pupils contracted. He leapt lightly aside, flames licking at his boots.
You’re a Fire Wielder?
The stranger, Bafeng, gave him a cold glance. Less talk.
Their powers collided again, shaking the forest. Trees toppled. The ground split open.
The mouth of a nearby cave caved in.
We can’t possibly fight them. Bai Yue’s head was spinning. After a long struggle,
she had finally managed to get the system to reveal where the captured females were being held.
But of course, Xue had insisted that she and Cang go handle it themselves leaving
Bai Yue behind in the cave. No matter how she argued, she couldn’t win.
That’s our problem, Xue said flatly.
But you’re injured. Bai Yue pointed at her bandaged leg.
I’ll protect her, Cang cut in, his tone leaving no room for debate.
Bai Yue deflated, waving her hand helplessly. Fine. Go, then.
Hearing that, Xue exhaled in relief. Truthfully, if Bai Yue had insisted on coming,
she wouldn’t have known how to stop her. Fortunately,
Bai Yue really had turned normal after that strange fever, just as the witch doctor had foretold.
Don’t leave the cave, Xue said, climbing onto Cang’s back.
Got it, got it. Bai Yue sat down with her arms around her knees, pouting.
But her darting eyes betrayed her.
Soon, the two beastmen disappeared into the dark.
The cave grew quiet again so quiet it made her skin crawl.
System, guide me! she whispered inside her head.
Truth was, Bai Yue was terrified of dying. But the system had
just offered her a new task rewarding her with ten square meters of
personal storage space and ten catties of rice seeds.
The thought of something other than meat in her future diet made it impossible to refuse.
Mission: Scan [Bondmate]
System, what’s a bondmate?
Unknown. I’ll only know after you perform the scan.
Figures.
Bai Yue pushed through the forest, the system’s faint light illuminating
her path so it wasn’t pitch black anymore.
A strange sound suddenly echoed through the trees something
between a bird’s call and a creature she’d never heard before.
She froze, heart pounding. Only when the noise stopped did she dare to move again.
System, if something dangerous comes, will you warn me in time?
Sorry, host, I don’t have that feature yet.
Then what can you do?
I can collect your body afterward.
…Bai Yue rolled her eyes. Thanks. Really helpful.
But somehow, the ridiculous exchange eased her fear.
As she walked, her thoughts drifted back to Xue and Cang. System,
can you show me what’s happening on their end?
Sure thing.
The view in her mind shifted.
Xue and Cang had reached the place Bai Yue had marked.
Sure enough, the captured females were there tied up,
surrounded by several massive beastmen. Judging by their builds,
they weren’t ordinary fighters; each of them had powers.
Xue tugged on Cang’s ear, whispering, Put me down behind that tree.
Then she added quietly, I’ll stay here. Go find Bafeng and bring him.
No. Cang’s refusal was instant. I’m not leaving you here alone.
Before Xue could argue, a hand suddenly reached out from the bushes.
A familiar head popped up.
Um… mind if I join in?
Both Xue and Cang stared speechlessly.
After a long pause, Cang asked under his breath, Didn’t you go back to the Eagle Clan?
Al scratched his head. I fell asleep in a tree. You two woke me up.
…What a coincidence.
Still, Xue decided, better an extra pair of hands than none.
You can fly. Go draw their attention. We’ll use the distraction to free the females.
Got it.
Before Xue could even finish explaining, Al shot out of the bushes like a missile,
yelling at the top of his lungs, Let the white fox females go! Come at me instead!
His voice thundered across the clearing, startling the wandering beastmen out of their conversation.
The tied-up females looked up, wide-eyed. Hope flared where despair had been moments before.
They were being rescued!
Or so they thought—until boom!
Al was sent flying with a single kick, crashing through the very tree
that Xue and Cang were hiding behind.
Both of them froze, now fully exposed in the open.
The wandering beastmen blinked at one another, then burst out laughing.
Hahahaha! What’s this? Some kind of flying performance?
Even my cubs play better pretend games than this!
The mockery stung, but Xue and Cang said nothing. They couldn’t.
Their plan had failed so spectacularly that even arguing felt pointless.
Meanwhile, back in the forest, Bai Yue had watched the entire scene
unfold through the system’s live feed.
For a long moment, she didn’t even know what to say.
