The sky was overcast, and the world seemed to have lost its vibrance under this gray haze.
Low-hanging clouds pressed against the horizon, blocking out even the blazing sun of summer.
Everything was tinted darkly.
But it also returned freshness to the city.
This weather was perfect for sleeping.
Lin Yuran had just fallen asleep when her phone vibrated incessantly from the bedside table, pulling her back from her dreams.
Her head hurt more painfully than if she were pricked by a needle due to lack of sleep; Lin Yuran turned over irritably, unwilling to answer the call.
Yet the phone continued vibrating persistently. She opened her heavy eyelids with difficulty, picked up the phone, and glanced at the caller ID—it was Xu Jianwei, her close friend.
Lin Yuran yawned, ready to press the ‘Accept’ button, but the other party hung up before she could respond.
Calls that can be easily ignored rarely require immediate attention, so Lin Yuran tossed the phone beside her pillow, closed her eyes, and continued sleeping.
Fifteen minutes later, the electronic lock on the door chirped.
Lin Yuran lived alone, so her sleep was already light, and she hadn’t fully settled back into slumber during these brief moments. In a daze, she heard the crisp and hurried sound of high heels approaching from afar, accompanied by an anxious voice:
“D**n it! I’m dying here—I hope she isn’t still asleep.”
Once she confirmed it was Xu Jianwei, Lin Yuran allowed her consciousness to fade.
The quilt was abruptly lifted from beneath her.
“D**n!” Xu Jianwei exclaimed in surprise.
The sudden coldness startled Lin Yuran awake; she slowly opened her eyes and asked, “What do you want?”
Xu Jianwei didn’t answer her question and instead said with shock, “Oh my god! How can you sleep without wearing clothes?” She quickly covered her up again, “You’re tempting people to commit crimes!”
Lin Yuran’s fatigue still lingered as she pulled the quilt tighter around herself, “Sleeping naked aids relaxation.”
But Xu Jianwei refused to let her continue sleeping and reached out to pull her up, “Hurry and get up, what time is it? You’re still sleeping at this hour—it’s not like that’s your style!”
Frustrated, Lin Yuran frowned as she was forcefully pulled upright, “I only just fell asleep at seven this morning.”
“Huh?” Xu Jianwei responded in surprise, “What did you do last night? Why are you sleeping now that the sun has risen?”
“Would you believe me if I say I forgot to sleep?” Lin Yuran cleared her dry throat, “I finished drafting the Qiansheng collaboration last night, and when I looked up after drawing, it was already seven o’clock!”
Whenever Lin Yuran threw herself into her creation, she would become fully immersed, completely disconnecting herself from the outside world. She could even forget about basic needs such as eating, drinking, using the restroom, or sleeping.
Xu Jianwei laughed gleefully. “Our Ranran’s efficiency is truly impressive, but we can’t sleep now, not after that. Hurry up and get out of bed; there’s an interview at 1 p.m.”
This sudden interruption certainly took away Lin Yuran’s last desire to snooze. She rubbed her sleepy eyes and asked blankly, “Interview? What interview?”
“RanYe Entertainment, that super awesome gaming company.” Xu Jianwei’s tone was excited as she explained, “They’re looking for someone to design mystery boxes for their most popular game, 《Infinite Showdown》.”
Understood.
Lin Yuran didn’t ask further and grabbed her phone from beside her pillow to check the time—12:10 PM—”I’m getting up right now.”
Xu Jianwei stepped outside, “Then hurry up and tidy yourself up—I’ll go downstairs to buy you breakfast… wait, no, lunch.”
“Mm-hmm,” Lin Yuran turned her phone back to ring mode and swiftly got off the bed.
The so-called interview was merely a collaborative discussion. As a designer of collectibles, there was no need for Lin Yuran to dress formally like those office workers, so she simply pulled out a pair of ripped denim pants that exposed half her thigh and a crop top from her wardrobe, then put them on one by one.
The jeans weren’t her size; they were too big around the waist. She pulled out a belt from the closet and fastened it to the innermost hole of the buckle before she could wear them comfortably.
At the bathroom sink, she washed her face briefly and brushed her teeth while glancing at herself in the mirror.
She had been planning on going makeup-free today, but the person reflected in the mirror was wearing such pale skin that the dark circles under her eyes stood out starkly against her complexion. Lin Yuran quickly covered the bags with concealer, then drew a simple line along her eyelashes to make her naturally lifted fox-like eyes appear even more expressive, giving her a brighter look.
There was no time to wash her hair, so Lin Yuran took out a flat iron, plugged it in, and began applying light foundation as the device heated up. She brushed through the silver strands hanging down her shoulders, waiting until the flat iron was hot enough to secure her bangs, carefully curving inward for a more pleasing arc.
Just as she finished putting on her makeup, her phone rang with a ding—Xu Jianwei sent over a short voice message: “My car is downstairs by your house, I’ll wait inside.”
Lin Yuran walked toward the door, swiftly put on her shoes, grabbed her backpack, and stepped out the door. As she glanced at the calendar on the wall, she noticed a date circled in red pen, the note beside it—[Hao Qinghe’s release!]—stood out sharply amidst the rest of the calendar.
Lin Yuran stared at that date for two silent seconds before opening the door and walking downstairs.
It was still cloudy outside, though no rain had fallen yet.
Xu Jianwei handed her lunch as she got in the passenger’s seat. “Eat it in the car; we’re running out of time.” She pressed on the gas pedal, driving swiftly forward. “F**k, they said this project has to be submitted by three today.”
Lin Yuran fastened his seatbelt, unhurriedly took a sip of his light milk tea, then asked while chewing on the chicken roll, “Didn’t you say this company is super impressive? How can such a big company handle business so carelessly? Seeking partnerships only gives them one day?”
“No, their official website announced it a week ago.” At a red light, Xu Jianwei stopped the car right before the crosswalk and turned slightly to shoot Lin Yuran a mischievous grin. “I’ve been busy these last few days, so I didn’t pay attention until I saw it on my social media this morning.”
“Busy with what? Making eyes at young men?”
While Xu Jianwei teased him playfully, she felt guilty for letting work suffer due to personal matters, so she quickly changed the topic. “Yuran, RanYe is one of the top game developers in China,” she began, sounding rather serious. “Since its public release, Infinite Showdown has remained popular among gamers worldwide, becoming a globally renowned competitive game within two years. If our collaboration succeeds, our IP will skyrocket too.”
Lin Yuran sipped her light milk tea, slightly puzzled. “A large game company like this would have their own dedicated art department or product designers—why do they need to collaborate with outside studios?”
