The Wind Heard Her Confession - Chapter 11: A Blinding Crush part 3
Lin Yuran turned back. It was a minivan. She didn’t recognize it. She turned up the volume on her French reading app by two notches and walked faster. In the past, plenty of people had honked at her on the street, offering rides. So annoying.
The car continued following her for a short while before speeding up, passing her and stopping ahead.
Two long legs stretched out from the back seat, followed by a tall and imposing figure. He called out to her, “Lin Yuran.”
Surprised to see Chi Ye, Lin Yuran quickly approached the car.
Chi Ye’s voice held a hint of exasperation. “I called you several times from behind, did you not hear me?”
“I was listening to something.” Lin Yuran pulled off her headphones. “So this car is yours?”
“Mm-hmm.” Chi Ye nodded slightly. “I’m passing by, thought I could give you a ride. Are you coming?”
Just thinking about the subway crowd during morning rush hour made Lin Yuran anxious. Knowing Chi Ye could give her a ride, she didn’t hesitate. With a smile, she said, “Since you’re passing by, sure, I’ll take a ride.”
Chi Ye opened the back seat car door for her. After Lin Yuran got in, she saw a driver inside, a man in his late forties.
The driver turned around with a smile to introduce himself, “Designer Lin, I’m President Chi’s driver. My last name is Wang. You can call me Mr. Wang.”
Lin Yuran studied the driver’s face for a moment. He looked strangely familiar, but she couldn’t remember where she’d seen him before. She smiled politely, “Okay, Mr. Wang.”
Chi Ye went around to the other side of the car, opened the door, and slipped in. Once he was seated, Chi Ye spoke up, “I saw you on the way and suddenly remembered what you said last night. Your bicycle was indeed lost in the parking area of my company, so we should bear some responsibility. But it doesn’t make sense for my company to compensate you with a new bike…”
Lin Yuran blinked, staring at him. If it doesn’t make sense, what’s the point of all this! she thought.
But Chi Ye continued, “As it happens, there’s a bun shop near your place that makes my favorite buns. I stop by for some every morning on my way to work. I could give you a ride every day, and when you’re done for the day, we’ll arrange for Mr.Wang to take you home. How about that as compensation?”
Only then did Lin Yuran notice a box of buns sitting on the central armrest at the back of the car. Being driven to and from work sounded nice, but would it mean she wouldn’t get her 1000 yuan transportation allowance?
That wouldn’t be a good deal for Lin Yuran. She could buy a bicycle for just a couple hundred yuan. She wasn’t picky about things like that; as long as it got her from point A to point B, it was fine. Plus, she’d still have hundreds of yuan left from her transportation allowance to use.
After a moment’s hesitation, she asked, “Will I still get my transportation allowance this way?”
Chi Ye looked at her, his lips twitching slightly upward. “Yes, separate things. We’ll give you everything we promised.”
“Okay, then.”
After agreeing, it was only later that some intuition rang alarm bells in her mind. Lin Yuran’s eyes scanned the car’s surroundings. “Where did you buy these buns?”
Chi Ye nodded towards the back. “From the Big Fatty Bun Shop across from your neighborhood.”
Lin Yuran leaned against the window and looked back. There was indeed a Big Fatty Bun Shop across from her neighborhood, but she wasn’t really into buns and had never gone to buy any. She’d almost completely forgotten that the shop existed.
As the car finally hit the road, Lin Yuran realized that arriving at work every day with Chi Ye could easily lead to misunderstandings.
After the car came to a stop outside Ranye, Lin Yuran spoke up before getting out, “Chi Ye, why don’t you wait two minutes before leaving? Let’s avoid any suspicion. You know how these things can get misinterpreted. I earn my living with my skills, not my looks, and I want to avoid any misunderstandings.”
Chi Ye lifted his eyebrow slightly and said helplessly, “Sure.”
As they waited in the car for those two minutes, someone tapped lightly on the window. Chi Ye rolled it down.
Qin Lang leaned against the window, looking at him and asked with a smile, “Chi Ye, what’s taking you so long to get out of the car?”
“What’s it to you?”
Qin Lang teased, “I just came from the parking area and saw Designer Lin get out of your car. What’s going on between you two?”
Chi Ye replied lazily, “She lost her bike yesterday at the parking area, so I gave her a ride.”
“Bikes are missing from our parking area?” Qin Lang was surprised and asked incredulously, “Who would steal her old, beat-up bike?”
After this brief conversation, the two minutes were up.
Chi Ye opened the door and got out. “Who knows, maybe it was a new model.” He handed the box of buns to Qin Lang. “Here’s breakfast for you.”
Qin Lang was puzzled. “You bought them and then didn’t eat them? Why bother?”
Chi Ye turned back with a mischievous grin, “Why don’t you guess?”
