The Wind Heard Her Confession - Chapter 2: A Blinding Crush part 2
“No, they’re just rumors among classmates,” Lin Yuran chuckled bitterly. “If he truly liked me, I clearly told him video games are a waste of time, so why didn’t he give up on the industry?”
“Indeed.” Xu Jianwei pondered slightly before saying, “But even if we don’t have that connection, we still share the bond of being old classmates, right? How could there be no hope?”
Lin Yuran rested her head on one hand, then said, “I bet Chi Ye didn’t recognize me either; he didn’t say a word to me just now.”
“He didn’t recognize you?” Xu Jianwei couldn’t believe it and raised her voice further. “How is that possible?” She reached over and pulled down the mirror from the passenger side, then said, “Sister, look at this bewitching face of yours.”
Lin Yuran turned back toward the mirror, fixing her slightly messy bangs. She asked, “Is it really that strange? Look at these waist-length silver locks and my makeup—I’m practically sparkling with beauty. Compared to this, my black hair during school days was nothing but plain and fresh, making me look only one-tenth as beautiful as I do now. It’s understandable that he wouldn’t recognize me.”
“Yes, yes, you know you’re beautiful too,” Xu Jianwei agreed. “If you were able to rely solely on your looks to enter the modeling, internet celebrity, or entertainment industry, how many billions would you be worth by now?”
Xu Jianwei wasn’t wrong—Lin Yuran’s appearance was exceptionally beautiful.
Her beauty was aggressive; her slightly lifted fox eyes seemed to hold desire while her amber irises were filled with moisture, making every glance seem like it could steal one’s soul. Yet her chin and jawline weren’t sharp, carrying some softness that softened the allure of her features, allowing them to remain above common standards.
On top of that, she possessed many light features: fair skin, light eyes, pale lips—giving her an air of youthful purity at first glance.
With such a face, regardless of whether someone preferred the innocent type or the sultry type, she would kill both markets.
Had she been willing to enter the entertainment industry, she could have become a star, but Lin Yuran insisted on pursuing a career based solely on talent, saying she had dreams she must pursue and skills she couldn’t abandon.
“Hey, I’ve got dreams.”
“Tsk.” Xu Jianwei rolled her eyes and whispered sarcastically, “The moment you open your mouth, this is what you say!”
Xu Jianwei wasn’t ready to give up just yet. “Ranran, maybe we can try harder today? We may have dreams, but we’re not people who disregard money as worthless.” She turned toward him. “If Chi Ye doesn’t recognize us, should we take the initiative?”
“How?”
“Last time we had a class reunion, Chi Ye didn’t come, but he’s still in our group chat. I added him and he accepted my request; do you want to talk to him?”
Lin Yuran shook her head frantically, refusing even physically. “No, I need to save face.”
“Tsk, how much is your face worth?” Xu Jianwei pleaded desperately. “Ranran, if we can cooperate with RanYe this time, not only will we make a huge profit from this deal, our IP will skyrocket too. We’ll have nothing to worry about for years to come.”
“You know what? The way you’re trying so hard to persuade me makes me wonder whether there’s something more behind it.” Lin Yuran turned to look at her, mercilessly exposing her ulterior motive. “Are you trying to get closer to that Qin Lang guy later on?”
Xu Jianwei choked.
“D**n! You’re right!”
“I just thought he looked like someone else, whose surname also happens to be Qin…” Lin Yuran reminded her. “For fun, let’s not take things too far.”
Xu Jianwei chuckled lightly. “Even if it gets bigger, I can handle it as long as it’s between friends. He’s just another man.”
“Think about your mother’s hospital bills, your grandmother’s nursing home fees, their nurses’ salaries, and your tuition for art school,” she lifted an eyebrow at Lin Yuran. “Want to add Chi Ye’s WeChat to the list?”
Lin Yuran recalled hearing that Xu Jianwei did indeed have Chi Ye’s contact number.
She had indeed been struggling these last few years; her mother’s medical bills and hospitalization fees, along with her grandmother’s nursing home expenses, were like two massive mountains weighing heavily on her shoulders. She worked tirelessly to earn money, but it was never enough to fill those enormous holes.
In order to save as much as she could, she barely bought anything for herself these days, never mind anything fancy. Her cell phone was only capable of making calls—no one would ever imagine that there were still young people in this day and age who used phones costing less than 200 yuan.
Before, when Lin Yuran went out, quite a number of men asked her for her WeChat ID, which she coldly declined. Who could believe her story? So, she pulled out her elderly phone and stared innocently at them, asking how they added friends. The men looked at her as if she were from outer space.
Lin Yuran now used a Huawei, courtesy of Xu Jianwei, whom she begged to supply her with work-related equipment after seeing how dire her situation truly was.
Lin Yuran also registered a WeChat account when she started using smartphones and imported all her contacts from her old phone, sending friend requests to everyone on her list; she remembered including Chi Ye.
Seeing that Lin Yuran was wavering, Xu Jianwei said, “When we’re waiting for the red light later, I’ll push it over.”
“No need, I think I have it.” Lin Yuran pulled out her cell phone and opened WeChat.
She only had a handful of friends on the app, and Chi Ye’s profile picture silently lay within, his nickname ‘Dark Night’. It was the name he used in their high school game, easy enough to find.
Lin Yuran tapped on Chi Ye’s profile photo and showed it to Xu Jianwei, asking, “Is this Chi Ye’s WeChat?”
“Yes, it is his WeChat.”
Lin Yuran stared at the blank chat screen for a long while before saying, “Never mind, I doubt he even knows this number belongs to me.”
After the high school exam, she moved to the northwestern city with dreams of making it big, and naturally changed her phone number. Chi Ye didn’t have her current number, so Lin Yuran guessed that he likely picked it up randomly.
“I don’t know how to bring it up…”
“Skreeeech—”
Suddenly, there was a sharp screech of brakes.
Lin Yuran and Xu Jianwei both crashed heavily forward due to their momentum.
After calming down, Xu Jianwei rolled down her window angrily, leaned out, and yelled at the car before them, “What’s wrong with you? Don’t know how to drive?! Why suddenly stop on the highway?”
“Ahahahahaha…”
Hearing this, Xu Jianwei pulled back her head, only to see Lin Yuran slapping her thigh with her phone, screaming incessantly.
“What’s wrong?” Xu Jianwei asked anxiously. “Did you get hurt?”
Lin Yuran stopped tapping the screen and slumped back into her seat, then said despondently, “Didn’t they say Earth won’t last much longer? When exactly is it going to blow up?”
Xu Jianwei grew anxious. “Exactly what’s going on?”
“Look!” Lin Yuran lifted his phone screen right in front of Xu Jianwei’s eyes.
Xu Jianwei took a closer look—it was a chat window between Lin Yuran and Chi Ye. Just moments ago, Lin Yuran had sent Chi Ye an adorable fox emoji conveying seduction.
The fox was extremely alluring, lying half-naked under its quilt, patting its own soft and round bottom, curling its finger, and shooting a flirtatious glance—aside from the words “Darling, come here!” written beside it, which stood out prominently.
