- The Young Lady Whose Engagement Was Annulled Decided to Observe What Would Become of the Kingdom thereafter
- Chapter 7 - Return and Report
The scenery outside the carriage window gradually changed. It began with the refined cobblestone streets of the capital, Glanz, then passed through vast plains, and now the view was filled with the rugged northern mountains and coniferous forests.
“We’ll be entering the Vermilion territory soon, my lady.”
“So, we’ve made it back safely.”
At the coachman’s words, I straightened my posture and turned my gaze outside.
Under a clear blue sky lay the northern Duchy of Vermilion. Rich mineral veins lay hidden within the steep mountains, and fertile valleys flourished amidst the harsh natural surroundings. Though it was the kingdom’s northernmost frontier, the richness of its resources made it one of the most powerful and wealthy territories in the realm.
My body still felt heavy from the recent incident and the long journey, but the familiar sights of my homeland gradually brought a sense of calm to my heart. I had always loved this landscape—the unchanging view of home since my childhood.
The carriage passed through the gates of the city. The sound of the wheels on the stone pavement changed, and the lively bustle of the marketplace reached my ears. Stalls were lined with colorful goods, and the cheerful voices of the townsfolk could be heard.
The citizens seemed to be going about their daily work as usual, but when they noticed the carriage bearing the Vermilion family crest, they stopped and bowed their heads in respect. Even from a distance, I could see the reverence in their eyes as they looked up at the crest.
I straightened my back even more and tightened my expression. Showing weakness would be seen as a sign of weakness for the entire family—I had been taught that since I was a child.
As the daughter of House Vermilion, I had to carry myself with dignity.
Soon, the mansion came into view. Built to withstand the harsh northern climate, the grey stone fortress lacked the splendor of a royal palace, but its solidity and dignity were unparalleled in the kingdom.
Tall stone walls, towers at each corner, and the main building in the center all spoke of the Vermilion family’s long history and enduring power.
Once we passed through the gates, I saw the household retainers lined up neatly in the courtyard. Their faces showed a mix of concern and respect. At the front stood the head butler, Henry. With a white-streaked beard, he was a loyal servant who had served the Vermilion family since before I was born.
When the carriage came to a stop, Henry stepped forward gracefully and opened the door. His movements were refined and precise.
“Welcome home, Lady Florence. We are all truly relieved at your safe return.”
His deep, warm voice made me smile.
“Thank you, Henry. I’m happy to see you all here to welcome me.”
I took a deep breath and stepped down from the carriage with poise. Stretching my legs, stiff from the long journey, I offered a polite bow to the retainers gathered to greet me. Surrounded by familiar faces, I finally felt that I had truly returned.
Henry leaned in close, speaking in a low voice so only I could hear.
“My lady, the Duke is awaiting you.”
He added gently, with concern in his voice:
“Would you like to rest or change first? I imagine you must be exhausted from your travels.”
I hesitated for a moment, then shook my head. I wouldn’t be able to relax until I’d made my report. Better to get it over with first.
“No, I’m fine. I’d like to see Father right away.”
This matter should be reported immediately, and I needed to seek my father’s judgment. This wasn’t just a personal issue—it affected the entire house.
“Very well. I will guide you to the study.”
As we walked down the corridor, I thought carefully about how to report everything. I needed to prepare myself. My father, Alfred Vermilion, Duke of the North, was known for being strict but fair.
How would he react to the news that I had accepted the annulment of my engagement to the prince? I hoped he would understand if I explained properly.
At the heavy wooden door, Henry gave a soft knock.
“Come in.”
A calm, low voice responded from within. Just hearing it brought a sense of familiarity and eased my tension a little.
After taking a deep breath and consciously composing my expression, I stepped into the study.
At the far end of the spacious room, behind a large desk by the window, sat my father. The mountains of the north could be seen through the window, and the room had a solemn atmosphere. The walls were decorated with family trees, maps, and portraits of past heads of the house.
“Father, I have returned.”
I bowed respectfully, keeping my posture straight and my gaze steady.
My father rose from his chair and slowly approached. Though in his mid-fifties, he stood tall and dignified.
“Florence, it’s good to have you back.”
He placed a hand on my shoulder. The warmth of his touch almost made my composure falter—but I quickly regained it.
“You must be tired from the long journey. Are you alright?”
Concern laced his voice.
“I’m fine. But there’s something I need to report.”
“Yes, I’ve heard. It’s about the annulment.”
So he already knew. I nodded in confirmation.
“Please, have a seat.”
“Thank you.”
He gestured toward the sofa by the fireplace. Once I sat down, he took the seat opposite me. A small table separated us.
“I’d like to hear it from you directly.”
“Of course.”
I intended to explain the events calmly and in order, without letting my emotions cloud the facts.
“It happened during the seasonal celebration. Prince Zain suddenly declared he was ending our engagement. The reason he gave was ‘true love.’ He publicly revealed his relationship with Lady Amaryllis of the upstart Crimson family and intends to make her the next queen—”
I recounted the details in a composed tone—what Prince Zain had said, how I responded, and how I finally left the venue after stating that I would quietly watch the kingdom’s future from afar.
Throughout my explanation, Father said nothing. He merely listened intently, sometimes furrowing his brow or stroking his chin in thought.
“—and that is what happened.”
I finished my account and waited nervously for his reaction. After a brief silence, my father slowly nodded, letting out a deep sigh.
“Accepting the annulment was the right decision. To be treated that way in public… you showed great dignity by walking away. You upheld the honor of House Vermilion. A wise choice.”
The tension in my shoulders eased. I was relieved. He understood. I let out a quiet breath.
“You must’ve had a hard time. You should rest for a while. Take time to recover, both in body and spirit.”
His voice was filled with kindness. But I shook my head firmly.
“No.”
I had no intention of resting just yet. I still had work to do.
“During my time at the royal palace, I studied many things in preparation to become queen—politics, economics, diplomacy, languages, the arts. I want to use that knowledge for the benefit of House Vermilion.”
Yes. Everything I learned had value. It would be a waste to let it go unused.
“I want to share what I’ve learned and contribute to our family’s prosperity.”
My words were filled with determination. My father looked slightly surprised for a moment, then gave a proud smile.
“You want to serve as a daughter of House Vermilion.”
“Yes. And one more thing.”
“What is it?”
I hesitated briefly, but quickly made up my mind and continued.
“I would like you to find me a new fiancé.”
His eyebrows lifted at my words.
“Already? But the annulment only just happened.”
There was concern in his voice as he searched my face for signs of distress. I met his gaze directly and replied.
“I’m fine. As a daughter of House Vermilion, it’s only natural that I do what’s best for the family.”
I wanted to find a new match quickly—to put the broken engagement behind me and move forward.
“…Very well. I’ll give it some thought.”
“Thank you.”
With that, I had said everything I needed to. I began to stand.
“Be sure to rest today. You must be tired from the journey.”
His gentle voice made me nod.
“Yes. I understand.”
If he put it that way, then I would rest properly. There was much to be done, so I needed to be ready to start tomorrow.
As I began to walk toward the door, Father’s voice called out once more.
“Florence.”
He had also risen from his seat and was looking directly at me.
“I’m proud of you.”
“Thank you, Father.”
I was glad I had come home.
