Episode 10: A Beginner’s Guide to Magic Even a Goblin Can Understand
*Bang!* — my body jumped at the sound and I woke up.
I thought someone came to throw away food scraps again. But that someone shouted angrily in a loud voice.
“Tch! What the hell is this!! It’s already full and I can’t throw away my trash!!!”
“Damn guild bastards, hurry up and change it already.”
“Guess I’ve got no choice… I’ll just dump it somewhere…”
I heard the sound of something being thrown and dumped with a thud outside the trash container.
Sure enough, the trash bin was full up to near the lid. And if I climbed the pile of trash, I might be able to reach the lid with my hand. But there didn’t seem to be enough space to push my body through.
Whoever came to throw the trash must’ve just dumped the scraps outside the bin and said that.
Since I heard something about a guild… and changing it, I guess someone will come eventually to open the trash bin and empty it.
When that happens, I’ll make a run for it and escape from here.
The remaining bits of dried meat and bread crumbs I had were all eaten up.
I can now at least produce water enough to gulp down. But just that won’t keep my body going…
Hurry up, someone, open the trash bin and empty it already~~
While holding my empty stomach, I looked at the stack of papers John left behind.
Besides the adventurer’s guide, there was also “A Beginner’s Guide to Magic Even a Goblin Can Understand: Beginner” and “A Beginner’s Guide to Magic Even a Goblin Can Understand: Intermediate.”
A magic guide!
This, this!!
This is exactly what I need right now!!!
I decided to start reading the beginner one. Then, I saw on the bottom of the cover page: “Excerpt from ‘Book of Discipline’ by Marquis Gonzo Tri Southend, head of the frontier.”
Seeing that, I thought, “So this is an excerpt written by some big-shot noble huh… probably filled with sloppy stuff.” I didn’t really expect much from it. But surprisingly, it turned out to be a solid guide.
It clearly explained that in order to use magic in the first place, you need magical power, how to make that magical power usable, and the basic procedures to activate simple magic.
Goblin… probably means even a low-class monster could understand. And that really seemed to be the case.
Even though I saw the word “Goblin,” their image didn’t pop into my head. So unlike Slimes, I probably haven’t actually seen one… or maybe I just can’t remember.
While reading the guide, I tried to look for the “lump of magic power” or “magic power pool” inside my body.
Apparently, it’s deep in the pit of my stomach. Which always hurts when I produce water or use Water Healing.
I placed my hand on my solar plexus and strongly focused on the magic power pool.
Sure enough, it felt like there was a fuzzy lump there.
I decided to appraise that lump.
When I focused and chanted [Appraisal: Magic Power Pool], it showed:
[Magic Power Pool: 20 / 200]
Hmm, does that mean the max is 200 and I currently only have 20?
Is 200 a lot or average…? I don’t think it’s low, but who knows…
Well, I’ll just assume that means there’s room to grow.
I placed my left hand on my solar plexus. And focusing on the magic power pool, I tried using the beginner-level water magic written in the guide.
If I recall, Water Creation and Water Bullet were marked with ◎ and 〇, right?
I can already use Water Creation. So I’ll try Water Bullet next.
I chanted the spell written in the guide:
“By the merciful power of the Creator God Saries, grant unto me—
The power to strike down my enemies—
Manifest—Water Bullet!”
Then, something came out of my right hand and a small water ball *thunked* against the mountain of trash.
A sharp pain jabbed my solar plexus.
I was disappointed with the puny water ball. But I decided to appraise the magic pool again.
[Magic Power Pool: 15 / 200] — So, I used 5 magic power on that puny water ball.
Guess I need to increase my magic power.
If 200 is the limit, then I’ll need to raise that too.
I kept reading the guide to find out how to increase my magic power.
It said: “Use magic to its limit and collapse from exhaustion. Repeat.”
So, the way I passed out from overusing Healing on my head and chanting “Pain, pain, go away” while pressing on the pain—was that the method?
Other methods written were: killing monsters to gain experience, eating or drinking herbs that contain magic, or absorbing mana essence from killed monsters.
Well, none of that can be done in a trash bin. So I guess I’ll just keep knocking myself out with Healing on my head.
While focusing on the magic power pool in my solar plexus, I pressed the bump on the back of my head with both hands and chanted:
“By the merciful power of the Creator God Saries, grant unto me—The power to heal my wounds—Water Healing.”
As I felt a nice sensation of power working on the bump on my head, I passed out.
