Episode 11: Escape from the Royal Capital
Suddenly, the trash bin shook violently.
I snapped awake.
The shaking had calmed down a bit. But something was off.
It felt like the trash bin was floating in the air. It was swaying softly as it moved.
Holding my breath, I listened carefully to my surroundings. I heard someone’s voice from outside the trash bin.
“Jeez, this trash bin’s full too. The garbage is overflowing outside.”
“That’s because the guild’s being stingy with the commission fee. They probably left it until complaints started coming in.”
“Seriously, it’d be fine if they were just being stingy, but isn’t someone somewhere skimming off the trash disposal fees?”
“Hey! Don’t say stuff like that out loud. I don’t want to get caught up in trouble from being glared at.”
“Yeah yeah, low-ranking adventurers like me will just quietly do our jobs~”
“You call yourself a low-ranking adventurer, but if you can use magic that floats such a big trash bin, you could aim higher.”
“Leave that stuff to the young guys with rock-hard dicks. A floppy guy like me is better off just earning daily wages~”
“I heard you’re spending your money on some girl you’re close with, though.”
“Tch, someone’s been saying unnecessary things. She’s just a tea-drinking buddy~”
“Tea-drinking buddy, huh… sounds like an expensive friend to have.”
“Well… it’s a way to relax~”
“Anyway, let’s finish this quickly for your friend’s sake too.”
It seemed the low-ranking adventurers were carrying the trash bin I was hiding in somewhere.
Magic that can float and move a big trash bin… If I could use that kind of magic, it’d be fun…
Eventually, the trash bin stopped with a loud *thud*.
Then it started moving again with a rattling noise.
Apparently, they were transporting the trash bin somewhere.
This might be my chance to escape from the bin. I pushed through the pile of trash and climbed up so I could jump out anytime.
The leftover food near the lid had been flattened by the movement of the bin. It created a gap. So it looked like I could get out somehow.
I gently pushed up the lid and peeked through the gap. The trash bin was moving between stone buildings. Looking slowly around, I saw multiple trash bins moving in a line.
I occasionally heard the sound of wheels turning below, like *clack clack clack*. So maybe they were being carried on carts.
Looking ahead of the moving trash bin line, it seemed they were heading for a gate in a tall city wall.
Beyond the gate, I could see a forest.
I wasn’t surprised anymore by the things I could recognize.
There were still many things I couldn’t remember. But I had a calm feeling that there were also things I *could* understand.
Until this damage to my brain’s memory area, or memory loss, is healed, I guess I’ll just have to live with this discomfort.
Eventually, the line of trash bins passed through the gate and seemed to be heading toward the forest.
After looking carefully around in all directions, I pressed my right shoulder against the lid and pushed it up.
My waist and knees still hurt. But now wasn’t the time to complain.
Anyway, I had to get out of the trash bin.
I squeezed my body through the gap in the lifted lid and got out of the bin.
Trying not to make any noise, I quietly closed the lid and lay down on top of the trash bin.
Haaah… finally, I got out.
It might not be a big deal to other people. But breathing in clean, non-smelly air—what a blessing it is!
I was hungry. But as I took in the fresh air with my chest full, a shadow fell over my face.
Even though the sky was a clear blue with not a single cloud… why?
When I looked up, a middle-aged man with a stubbly beard was looking down at me. His hand rested on the hilt of the short sword on his hip.
“Hey! You!! What the hell are you doing there!?”
I froze up, unable to speak. I was overwhelmed by the force of his voice.
