Chapter 7: Looking for a Cat. Its butt is still perky.
Gu Shiying quickly pulled his hand away from Fu Huan’s, instantly losing all interest in the sweet, juicy grapes.
The grapes are dirty!
Gu Shiying was the only one who could bear the awkwardness in the air, secretly clenching his fists.
He said with a forced smile, “I can wipe it myself.”
“Okay,” Fu Huan nodded, tossed the tissue away, and calmly took his clothes into the bathroom, not even sparing Gu Shiying a glance.
Gu Shiying felt that if he had been two seconds later, he might have been tempted to punch Fu Huan.
Couldn’t a Taoist priest really come and take down this pervert Fu Huan?
Before bed, Gu Shiying made up his mind not to have any more physical contact with Fu Huan!
It was Monday, sunny, with temperatures ranging from 28 to 32 degrees Celsius.
Two days later, Gu Shiying’s arm wasn’t as painful as it had been at first, but because the scab was still forming, he still couldn’t bend his elbow.
Of course, he couldn’t be gay himself.
Early in the morning, he grabbed a long-sleeved shirt from the closet, wrapping himself tightly around his skin.
Zhang Zhi observed him from time to time during class, and afterward, unable to hold back, he asked Gu Shiying, “Aren’t you hot wearing all these clothes? Or do you have a cold?”
Gu Shiying: “No, I just wanted to wear a coat. It’s a bit chilly this morning.”
Zhang Zhi pointed at his forehead: “You’re sweating.”
Gu Shiying: “…”
Zhang Zhi: “Why don’t you take off your coat? Your crush won’t give up on you just because you put on an extra layer.”
Gu Shiying said stubbornly, “I won’t.”
Zhang Zhi: “No, your crush doesn’t even deserve to see your arms?”
Gu Shiying gritted his teeth: “Yes, he doesn’t.”
His brother had no idea what torment he’d endured the past two days.
Zhang Zhi thought he was avoiding a girl’s crush.
“A girl like you actually met a heartless man like you. You’ll be doomed to be alone.”
Gu Shiying was indeed angry: “You don’t understand. Forget it.”
To say more would only make him furious.
For the next few days, Gu Shiying avoided Fu Huan. Except for the evenings when they met in the dormitory, Gu Shiying never went back. Even when he returned to the dormitory, he would crawl back into his bed to play with his phone before Fu Huan returned, giving Fu Huan no chance to see him.
Gu Shiying spent the next few days comfortably. Combined with his busy schoolwork, the shock Fu Huan had previously inflicted on him gradually faded.
Every day at school brought something new, even overshadowing Gu Shiying’s heroic act. The wound on his arm gradually healed, and he could slowly move around and take care of himself. Everything was moving in a positive direction.
Friday had arrived again.
Zhang Zhi wanted to send Liu Wenqing milk tea again and also ask her out on a weekend date, but this time, they didn’t seem happy after their WeChat conversation. Gu Shiying wondered if he’d been rejected.
Gu Shiying asked, “Liu Wenqing approached you, so why are you upset? You were so happy last week that you could jump up to the ceiling.”
Zhang Zhi was so worried he could barely eat: “You know, that was last week. Our club has activities every other week, and she used to attend, but this week she said she had something to do and couldn’t attend.”
Zhang Zhi met Liu Wenqing through the club and was completely captivated. He pursued her for six months, but she seemed uninterested. As a friend, Gu Shiying could only silently support him.
“So, are you still sending the milk tea?”
Gu Shiying had a good appetite. He ate the braised pork he had finally snatched, his cheeks bulging with contentment.
Zhang Zhi poked at his rice with a lack of appetite and said dejectedly, “No, I think she really has someone she likes, and she doesn’t have any feelings for me.”
Gu Shiying, knowing the truth, gently advised his brother, “Then stop being a lapdog and go meet new girls.”
Zhang Zhi clenched his fist: “Okay, brother, let’s go meet girls together!”
When Gu Shiying woke up from his nap, he checked WeChat and was greeted by a message from his brother.
Zhang Zhi: [milk tea.jpg]
Gu Shiying: You licker.
Zhang Zhi: [I can’t let you go.jpg]
Gu Shiying had been feeling a little sleepy, but seeing his brother still hanging around in the lapdog world instantly sobered him up.
He washed his face and came out, startled to see Fu Huan, who hadn’t returned to the dorm at noon. All the memories from before flooded back into his mind.
Gu Shiying met his gaze with a wet face and quickly grabbed his backpack.
“I’m going to class first.”
Fu Huan had barely nodded when Gu Shiying vanished.
Liang Qi poked his head in from the doorway. “Why are you standing there in a daze? Class’s in.”
Fu Huan: “Yeah.”
Liang Qi was a chatterbox, never holding back in front of Fu Huan. As he walked downstairs, he told his friend about some industry news he’d just read. He didn’t get a reply, but he noticed Fu Huan’s gaze fixed on a youthful-looking boy in a white shirt and jeans. Standing before him was a very pretty girl, and they seemed to be exchanging WeChat messages.
Liang Qi gave a narrow laugh. “Is that boy your type?”
Fu Huan gave him a look. “That’s Gu Shiying. He’s straight.”
Liang Qi: “Well, he’s famous for his bravery this time.”
Fu Huan: “Isn’t he?”
Liang Qi: “He’s quite handsome. You haven’t had any interest in him, have you?”
Knowing Fu Huan, he knew Gu Shiying’s looks were Fu Huan’s type.
Gu Shiying was handsome and delicate, with a gentle demeanor and almond-shaped eyes that seemed to bring a smile to his face. He was easily captivating, but he never dressed up, and it was hard to spot his beauty without a close look.
Fu Huan didn’t respond to Liang Qi’s question. Instead, with a cold expression, he walked past Gu Shiying and the girl and headed towards the teaching building, his strides brisk and long.
Gu Shiying had indeed been asked for his WeChat ID by a strange girl, but the girl wasn’t asking for a romantic relationship; she was asking for help finding her lost cat.
When he first acquired his mind-reading ability, he tested it not only on classmates but also on cats and dogs. His ability could even hear the thoughts of small animals.
Two weeks ago, he found a clipped starling in the school cafeteria. The little starling was very affectionate, walking around his feet and even trying to follow him back to his dorm.
He tried to interact with the starling and was able to hear its thoughts.
Although the small animal’s voices weren’t as clear as humans’, the repetitive content was enough for him to help him find the cat.
He posted a message on the forum based on the information the little starling had revealed. Within an hour, the bird’s owner came looking for him.
The girl in front of him was a junior. She had just told Gu Shiying that her cat had wandered out of the dorm two days ago. She’d tried everything, but couldn’t find it. She’d posted on the forum, but no one responded.
Gu Shiying: “Senior, I’m not sure I can find your pet.”
Senior: “It’s okay. It doesn’t matter if I can’t find it. I’m really at my wit’s end. I’ll find her at any chance. I’m worried she’s not doing well out there, afraid she’ll get attacked by stray cats. Junior, I can pay you. Thank you so much.”
Gu Shiying: “I’ll try, but I have to go to class now. I’ll help you after I finish.”
The senior thanked him profusely: “Thank you, thank you.”
After they added each other on WeChat, Gu Shiying rushed off to class.
He hadn’t mentioned the cat search to Zhang Zhi, because Zhang Zhi had been absent-minded during his first class that afternoon.
Gu Shiying, of course, had to be concerned: “What’s wrong?”
Zhang Zhi: “She rejected my milk tea.”
Gu Shiying: “She already has someone she likes. Isn’t it normal for her to reject your milk tea? It’s not like you just found out.”
Zhang Zhi looked like she was about to cry: “I saw her carrying milk tea upstairs, like she was giving it to someone else. I’ve never even had her milk tea!”
Gu Shiying was devastated when she heard this: “How about just let it go? Save some money on the milk tea.”
Zhang Zhi: “I’m heartbroken.”
Gu Shiying: “You’re not even in a relationship.”
Zhang Zhi was even more heartbroken; he wasn’t even in a relationship!
Gu Shiying was about to ask him if he wanted to go with her to look for the cat when Jiang Laoer, who lived in the neighboring dormitory 701, asked him: “There’s a local exchange meeting tonight, just for our province. Do you want to go?”
Jiang Laoer and Zhang Zhi were from the same city.
Zhang Zhi immediately piqued his interest, quickly recovering from his heartbreak: “Go!”
Gu Shiying, still trying to distract his friend, replied: “…”
Well, he’ll just have to go find the cat himself tonight.
After class, Gu Shiying received numerous cat photos from a senior student. It was a neutered silver tabby with a darker gray coloration. Its gray fur formed a diamond-shaped marking on its head. It was an easily recognizable cat, named Youtiao.
Gu Shiying asked the senior student for a towel that smelled like Youtiao, and she brought it directly to the cafeteria.
After dinner, Gu Shiying set off with the towel.
The senior student asked him, “Will it really work? I also went to see Senior Daju with a towel, but she didn’t respond at all.”
Senior Daju was their school’s cat, beloved by the entire faculty and students. She even had her own social media account with over 100,000 followers.
Gu Shiying: “My method might be different from yours.”
Senior: “Then I’ll go with you?”
Gu Shiying: “I’m a bit faster on my bike, so I’ll try it first. Do you have any cat treats?”
Senior: “Yes, I have. I’ll give them all to you.”
Gu Shiying, armed with a towel and cat treats, rode his bike to find Senior Daju. He found her sprawled on a bench in the school pavilion.
Senior Daju was very affectionate. She’d been petted so often by students that she’d twist her increasingly plump body whenever she saw a human.
After petting her until she was comfortable, Gu Shiying stroked her pink paws. Daju purred, her paws humming like a motor.
[Freeze-dried chicken.]
[Freeze-dried chicken.]
[Freeze-dried chicken.]
He dug out some snacks, including a bag of freeze-dried chicken. After feeding Daju one, he placed the fried dough stick towel under her nose: “Daju, have you ever seen a cat smell like this?”
[It’s the same kind of smell.] Gu Shiying shook the frozen chicken in his hand. “If you find this fellow, this package of frozen chicken is yours.”
Daju lazily stood up and stretched. After glancing back at Gu Shiying, she began to run.
Daju was a cat. She didn’t follow the right path, preferring to wander into the greenbelts. It was getting dark, and Gu Shiying sometimes couldn’t see her. Fortunately, Daju was kind and waited for him.
Gu Shiying chased Daju all the way to the greenbelt outside the school’s outdoor basketball court.
He heard a faint meow from the greenbelt, but it was inaudible unless he listened carefully.
The school’s streetlights weren’t bright enough, and the lights on the basketball court shone directly onto the court. Gu Shiying could only turn on his phone’s light and lay on the ground, searching for the cat.
“Youtiao? Is that you?”
He saw a gray and white cat in the greenbelt. He thought he saw Youtiao, but the cat didn’t move.
Gu Shiying tried to get into the green belt, but his hand hadn’t fully healed yet, so he could only reach in with his left.
The school’s green belt was well-maintained and lush. Gu Shiying crawled on the ground, scratching, but he couldn’t find the cat. The more he reached, the more the cat retreated into the protective netting in fear.
Suddenly, someone tugged at his shirt, startling him. He straightened up, looking up to see Fu Huan, dressed in a basketball jersey, crouching beside him, his head lowered.
Fu Huan: “Why are you sticking your butt out?”
“I’m looking for… Ouch…” Gu Shiying lost his balance and fell toward the green belt. Fu Huan reached out and grasped the exposed portion of his waist.
The scorching heat from Fu Huan’s fingertips nearly burned Gu Shiying’s skin.
[Her butt is quite perky.]
Gu Shiying: “…”
