Chapter 8: I Want to Bite You to Death. With your shirt buttoned so low, your collarbone should be…
Gu Shiying couldn’t help but roll his eyes at Fu Huan.
Ah, this guy is so annoying!
Fu Huan thought Gu Shiying was startled by his presence and asked again, “What are you looking for here?”
Gu Shiying rubbed his chest and tried to remain calm. “I’m looking for a cat.”
Fu Huan looked into the bushes. It was pitch black. “Where is it?”
Gu Shiying turned on his phone’s flashlight and pointed it at a grayish-white shadow nestled between the weeds and the bushes near the wire fence.
“See? Crouching inside, my eyes turn green when the light hits. I can’t reach it, so I can’t catch it.”
Fu Huan squatted beside him and nodded. “It’s really hard to catch.”
Gu Shiying had an idea: “Are you allergic to cat hair? Can you help me catch it?”
Fu Huan looked at him with interest, his tone light, “Why did you catch it? You’re raising it yourself?”
Gu Shiying: “I caught it for a senior.”
Fu Huan plucked off a half-pruned leaf and lowered his voice several degrees. “Senior? You have quite a wide circle of friends.”
Gu Shiying was thinking about how to catch the cat, not considering the deeper meaning of Fu Huan’s words, nor noticing his fleeting emotional fluctuations.
“Senior came to me. Can you help me catch it?” Gu Shiying, tired of squatting, simply sat on the ground, blinking his bright almond-shaped eyes expectantly at Fu Huan.
“Sure, but you’ll owe me another meal,” Fu Huan said, taking advantage of the situation.
Gu Shiying thought about his earlier boast: Fu Huan saved his life, and he still owed him a meal.
He looked around, but didn’t see anyone he knew, let alone ask his senior sister to come over.
One meal didn’t seem to make much of a difference; it wasn’t like he couldn’t treat him to a meal in the cafeteria.
Gu Shiying feigned casualness, displaying his straight-man generosity and bravery: “No problem.”
If he didn’t agree, the cat would escape.
Gu Shiying urged Fu Huan: “Catch it, catch it! Don’t let it get away.”
Fu Huan: “I know. Hold your phone well, and shine it well. It’s a little hard to see inside.”
Fu Huan’s arm was just long enough to reach the fried dough sticks hidden inside. However, just as he was about to touch it, the cat suddenly stretched out its claws at Fu Huan, and his quick reaction saved him from being scratched.
Gu Shiying also noticed: “My senior told me this cat isn’t dangerous, so why is it biting?”
Fu Huan said, “It’s a pet cat that escaped. It’s been outside for too long and is frightened and has a stress reaction.”
Although Fu Huan’s concerns troubled him, Gu Shiying couldn’t ignore his safety. Bites and scratches from small animals always require rabies vaccinations.
Gu Shiying was worried. He hadn’t expected the cat to have a stress reaction: “What should I do? I have no experience raising cats.”
He remembered the snacks my senior had given him, so he took some out of his pocket and handed them to Fu Huan.
“Why don’t we try to lure it out with some snacks?”
Fu Huan tore open the bag and reached out to the fried dough sticks.
After two days of starvation, the fried dough sticks stopped meowing after the familiar snack aroma. They even grabbed the small dried fish from Fu Huan’s fingertips and began to nibble on it.
Taking advantage of its moment of disengagement, Fu Huan reached out with his long arm, quickly grasped the cat by the scruff of the neck, and pulled it out of the bushes.
Gu Shiying breathed a sigh of relief. “Great, buddy.”
Fu Huan glanced at him, then set the cat on the ground. Putting his hand on its neck, he asked, “Where are you taking it?”
Gu Shiying: “I’ll take it to my senior. That way she won’t have to run all the way from the dorm to find me.”
Fu Huan chuckled softly. “I didn’t expect you to be such a sweetheart.”
Gu Shiying smiled at him, scratched his head, and said truthfully, “My senior said she’d pay me. I make her money. She’s my boss.”
He hadn’t really thought much about it at the moment.
Fu Huan picked up the pet cat, which was so grimy it was almost unrecognizable. “Let’s go. I’ll take it to your place.”
Gu Shiying: “Or you can give it to me. It’s quite dirty.”
Fu Huan: “I played basketball and didn’t wash my hands. It won’t affect me.”
Gu Shiying saw that he wasn’t pushing it: “Okay, then. You’re not playing anymore?”
He fed Youtiao two more dried fish. The cat was uncomfortably quiet in Fu Huan’s arms, completely devoid of its initial aggressiveness. Fu Huan: “No, it’s too hot.”
Gu Shiying arrived on his bicycle. Fu Huan held the cat, while he slung the basketball Fu Huan had put in the net onto the hood of his bicycle and pushed it along.
The two, who hadn’t interacted much in a week, were surprisingly walking down the campus road over a cat-catching incident.
Gu Shiying contacted a senior student and took a few photos of the dirty fried dough sticks. After she confirmed it was her cat, she sent him several thank-you messages on WeChat.
The girls’ dormitory was some distance from the basketball court, but the sight of the two men holding the cat on the street was quite eye-catching. The image of two handsome men holding a dirty cat was quite endearing, especially since some passing students secretly snapped photos of the beautiful scene under the streetlight.
However, one of the participants began slapping his arm non-stop.
Pa, pa, pa!
Gu Shiying slapped his left hand with his right hand.
Fu Huan didn’t understand why he suddenly started to spit. “What are you doing?”
Gu Shiying muttered, “A mosquito is biting me.”
Fu Huan: “There are a lot of trees here, and there’s a sewer down there, so it’s a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Next time you go out, spray some floral water.”
Gu Shiying looked at the red bump on his forearm and scratched it. “Well, why aren’t these mosquitoes biting you?”
Fu Huan chuckled. “Aren’t you attracting attention with you?”
“You’re just being hateful.” Gu Shiying felt that Fu Huan, whether he had a voice or not, was equally irritating.
“That’s the truth,” Fu Huan shrugged.
When he couldn’t hear his inner voice, he was two-faced. When he did, he felt like slapping him. How could one person have so many faces?
Gu Shiying glared at him, then scratched his arm again and made the sign of the cross. It seemed to have some effect, but it was only psychological.
While suffering from the itchiness, they finally arrived downstairs at the girls’ dormitory where the senior student lived.
When the senior saw the fried dough sticks, she was so moved she almost cried and thanked Gu Shiying again.
“Thank you so much, junior!”
Gu Shiying felt a little uncomfortable being thanked. The senior was overly enthusiastic: “You’re welcome. Senior Daju found the fried dough sticks, and it was my roommate who caught them.”
He pulled Fu Huan out just in time.
“You guys should be thanked too. I’ll transfer the reward to you. Thank you, juniors.”
Gu Shiying glanced at the amount the senior had transferred and thought to himself, cat owners are truly generous. She’d earned five hundred in just two hours.
Satisfied, the senior went home with the fried dough sticks.
One less stray cat in the world. As his mind-reading skills helped others, his happiness grew, and his mood improved.
The women’s and men’s dormitories were close, a short walk away.
After washing his hands, Gu Shiying checked on his phone.
Ding.
Fu Huan, washing his hands and preparing to take his clothes to the shower, felt his phone vibrate slightly. He saw a message from Gu Shiying.
Fu Huan: “How do you transfer the money?”
Gu Shiying: “It’s your reward for helping me.”
The main reason was that he was injured last weekend, and Fu Huan brought him breakfast and dinner, but he didn’t pay. He was taking this opportunity to settle the score.
Fu Huan: “It’s not that much.”
Gu Shiying: “The senior student gave more, and you took the risk of getting a rabies shot to catch a cat, so it’s only right.”
Fu Huan said nothing more. He clicked the receipt button and said, “Next time you need something like this, you can ask me for it.”
Gu Shiying smiled, thinking to himself: Impossible! I won’t let you get close to me!
Fu Huan and Gu Shiying showered one after another.
When Gu Shiying left, Guan Yu and Yang Shuheng had both returned to their dorms. The two had tacitly stayed at school that week.
As soon as Yang Shuheng entered, he slapped a ticket on their desk.
Gu Shiying was still wiping his hair when he picked up the ticket. “What’s this?”
Yang Shuheng, his androgynous idol face, raised its head. “Our band has a livehouse show tomorrow. If you have time, come support us.”
Yang Shuheng is a music student and formed a band with a friend. He’s the guitarist, and besides attending classes, he practices with the band.
In Gu Shiying’s eyes, Yang Shuheng is his future entertainment industry connection.
Zhang Zhi is going to a social tonight, and knowing him, he’s sure he’ll have other activities tomorrow, so he’ll have to go alone.
Gu Shiying: “Aren’t you going to sell it?”
Yang Shuheng: “We’re not a popular group, we just have a small following. It’s okay.”
Gu Shiying: “Then I’ll go and experience it.”
He had only seen Yang Shuheng perform at last year’s Mid-Autumn Festival Gala, and he’d sometimes practice in his dorm, but he’d never seen a livehouse show.
Yang Shuheng asked Guan Yu again, “Old Guan, what about you? Are you free tomorrow night?”
Guan Yu: “Of course I’ll go and support you.”
Yang Shuheng didn’t expect Fu Huan to go, but politely said, “Brother Huan, if you’re not free, forget it.”
Fu Huan gave a surprising answer: “We can go.”
Yang Shuheng: “This is the first time our dorm has gone out together, so it’s a deal. The show starts at 7:30, so just be there at 7. I’ll be there tomorrow afternoon to prepare and won’t be going with you.”
Guan Yu suggested, “Then let’s go together, the three of us.”
Fu Huan: “Okay.”
Gu Shiying didn’t want to spoil the fun: “So can I.”
He had no choice but to agree.
But didn’t Fu Huan usually stay out of these activities? Why would he agree this time?
He had just agreed because he knew Fu Huan wouldn’t go.
Between avoiding Fu Huan and watching the livehouse, Gu Shiying gritted his teeth and chose the latter. He couldn’t let Yang Shuheng down.
Guan Yu was a detail-obsessed and highly organized person. His two-day trip was planned down to the minute; he was a true mastermind.
Guan Yu asked Gu Shiying and Fu Huan, “How are we getting there tomorrow? Should we take the subway?”
Fu Huan looked up the address on his phone and said, “I can borrow Liang Qi’s car tomorrow.”
Guan Yu: “That’s great! We’ll leave at 4:30 PM. Excluding traffic, we’ll arrive by 5:30 PM, and we can even have dinner together.”
Gu Shiying: “That’s fine.”
Transportation, departure time, and even dinner were all completely arranged.
His roommates were all incredibly impressive.
Fu Huan: “Sure.”
The next day, Gu Shiying still hadn’t seen Fu Huan, but before 4:30 PM, he sent him and Guan Yu his location.
The temperature had risen again today, and he was wearing a loose-fitting light blue shirt.
Gu Shiying and Guan Yu found Fu Huan waiting for them in the parking lot.
Fu Huan casually raised his hand upon seeing them, his voice as calm as ever: “Here.”
Guan Yu saw the make of the car and exclaimed.
“Liang Qi, this is a nice car. He’s rich!”
He unceremoniously climbed into the back seat. Gu Shiying tried to join him, but Fu Huan grabbed her wrist.
“Gu Shiying, you sit in the passenger seat and use the navigation.”
The moment Gu Shiying’s wrist touched the warmth of Fu Huan’s palm, his inner voice came to him.
[With her clothes buttoned so low, her collarbone must be kissable.]
Gu Shiying bit her cheek secretly: “…”
I want to bite you to death.
He sneered inwardly. Since he couldn’t change Fu Huan’s feelings, he would change himself.
Gu Shiying forced a smile and looked at Guan Yu. “Old Guan, could you sit in the passenger seat and help with the navigation? My sense of direction isn’t very good.”
Guan Yu: “Sure, I’ll help with the navigation.”
Fu Huan: “…”
