- Chapter 3 - The First Time Helping a Girl Put on Shoes
Sunlight shone on the leaves and grass, and the air carried the scent of soil.
The more beautiful the world looked, the heavier Zhuang Zi’ang’s heart felt.
Afraid that someone might see him looking so miserable, he quickly left the hallway and ran down the stairs toward the playground.
As he ran, tears streamed down his face.
In the northwest corner of the basketball court, the trees grew thick.
Several tall ginkgo trees stood full of life under the sun, lush and green.
In this quiet corner, Zhuang Zi’ang let all his sadness pour out.
Big tears soaked into the soil under his feet.
His throat grew hoarse from crying.
He didn’t understand.
He had never done anything bad—so why was the world being so unfair?
He used to think death was something far away.
But when it suddenly came close, it crushed his spirit in an instant.
As he cried, a soft melody reached his ears. It was faint, like a thread in the wind.
At first, he thought he was imagining it.
Slowly, the tune became clearer. The melody was special—full of twists and turns.
“Do Re Mi Re Do Si, Do Si Re Re Re Re Si Re Si Do…”
Zhuang Zi’ang was sure he had never heard it before.
The delicate music flowed through his heart like a small stream.
The deep sadness inside him began to ease.
Through teary eyes, he looked at the world around him—both real and unreal.
“Hey, you’re a boy and you’re crying like that? Aren’t you embarrassed?”
A clear voice suddenly sounded above him.
Zhuang Zi’ang jumped in surprise.
He looked up and saw a girl sitting on the branch of a ginkgo tree.
His face flushed red in an instant.
She must have seen his miserable state just now.
The girl was very pretty—with an oval face, almond-shaped eyes, and an uneven braid resting on her left shoulder.
She wore a plain white shirt with a deep blue pleated skirt that reached her calves.
One foot had a clean white canvas shoe, while the other was bare.
What stood out most was the blooming peach blossom tucked behind her ear.
Zhuang Zi’ang had thought Lin Mu Shi was already beautiful, but compared to the girl in front of him, Lin Mu Shi seemed just a bit less stunning.
“Why aren’t you in class?” Zhuang Zi’ang asked.
“Shh, keep your voice down.”
The girl raised her finger to her lips.
Her fingers were long and delicate, like white jade.
Her lips were small and pink, like freshly picked strawberries.
“Hi, I’m Zhuang Zi’ang from Class 9,” he introduced himself quietly.
“Su Yudie, Class 23. You can call me Little Butterfly,” the girl replied.
Her voice was pleasant—like pearls dropping onto a jade plate, like raindrops hitting banana leaves, or a breeze blowing from a wheat field and making wind chimes ring.
Zhuang Zi’ang knew there was only one grade level in this school area, and it had only 22 classes.
She said Class 23, likely to avoid revealing her real class. She was being cautious.
Su Yudie dangled her bare foot. “Zhuang Zi’ang, can you pick up my shoe?”
Zhuang Zi’ang followed her gaze and saw a white canvas shoe under the tree.
It must have fallen off when she was climbing.
“You’re a girl—why are you climbing so high?”
He picked up the shoe and stood on his tiptoes to hand it to her.
His eyes couldn’t help but land on her leg, smooth and soft like lotus root.
Such perfect lines, such delicate skin—like a work of art.
Then a bold and naughty thought popped into Zhuang Zi’ang’s mind.
The girl above him was wearing a skirt.
If he just adjusted his angle a bit…
Of course, that was only a thought. He didn’t actually do anything inappropriate.
Lust is the root of all evil—judge actions, not thoughts. If we judged hearts, no one would be innocent.
Su Yudie sat sideways on the branch and tried to put on the shoe, but couldn’t manage it after several attempts.
Zhuang Zi’ang stared up at her, a bit nervous, afraid she might lose her balance.
“You help me put it on,” Su Yudie suddenly said, lowering her foot.
She also tossed the white canvas shoe back down to him.
They had just met for the first time, so her request felt a bit too forward.
But seeing her current situation, he could understand.
Zhuang Zi’ang hesitated, swallowed hard, and then reached out to hold her soft, small ankle.
It was the first time he had ever helped a girl put on shoes.
His heart was racing, and his breathing became heavy.
After much effort, he finally slipped the shoe on and tied a slightly messy bow.
“Clumsy,” Su Yudie teased with a smile.
“You’re the one who’s silly—climbing trees in a skirt,” Zhuang Zi’ang muttered in defense.
After the shoe was on, Su Yudie looked at the ground and said, “It’s so high. I’m a little scared. Catch me.”
Zhuang Zi’ang nodded and opened his arms, signaling for her to jump.
Su Yudie took a deep breath and finally leapt down.
Zhuang Zi’ang caught her steadily in a princess carry.
The soft body in his arms gave off a gentle, sweet scent.
It felt just like a scene from a romance drama.
Su Yudie looked up into his eyes and blushed.
“Put me down.”
“Oh!”
Zhuang Zi’ang quickly helped her stand.
Their eyes met, and they both smiled.
Su Yudie’s clean, bright smile was like warm sunlight that drove away the gloom and cold in Zhuang Zi’ang’s heart.
This girl who appeared like an angel from the sky seemed to have a special power.
“Why were you hiding here and crying?” Su Yudie asked curiously.
“I had something sad happen, and I needed to let it out,” Zhuang Zi’ang said, trying to sound casual.
“Hmph! Not embarrassed at all. I’ve had sad things happen too, but I didn’t cry!”
Su Yudie pouted.
Zhuang Zi’ang just shook his head and gave a bitter smile. He didn’t argue.
Looking at her age and cheerful personality, she probably couldn’t understand his sadness.
She was like the rising sun—just beginning to shine.
But he was like the evening sun—about to crash behind the mountains in a pool of bl00d, disappearing into the night.
Darkness and cold would follow.
He didn’t know where his soul would go.
The pleasant sound of the class bell echoed across the empty playground.
The lifeless school building slowly came back to life.
It was the fourth class of the morning—time for lunch.
All the classrooms on each floor became lively again.
Su Yudie blinked.
“If you’re feeling down, I’ll take you out to have some fun and eat good food. But without my permission, you’re not allowed to cry anymore.”
Hearing those slightly bossy words, Zhuang Zi’ang nodded before he could think.
The warmth that had been taken from him seemed to return with this bright sunshine.
Even if he only had three months left, every day was worth living well.
If life had no length, it could still have width.
The girl in front of him was like a lively little angel, sent to guide his path and save his soul.
