To Sink Into You - Chapter 2
Ming Qian subtly increased the distance between them, paused for a few seconds, and then said slowly, “I’m sorry. Uncle Wen and Aunt Su are both Betas, so I assumed…”
The probability of a Beta couple having an Alpha or Omega child is extremely low, less than 6%. Moreover, with pheromone-suppressing patches blocking their scents, Alphas and Omegas can’t perceive each other’s secondary genders.
Therefore, from the moment Wen Yuxi entered the room, Ming Qian had subconsciously assumed she was a Beta.
She hadn’t expected that after so many years apart, the adorable, clingy little girl from her memories would not only have blossomed into a stunning beauty but also differentiated into an Omega.
Wen Yuxi laughed knowingly. “I thought I’d be a Beta too.”
Ming Qian pondered. “The Wen Family’s Alpha and Omega genes are remarkably pure. The chances of skipping a generation are indeed higher.”
Wen Yuxi neither confirmed nor denied this, changing the subject. “What exactly happened with Sister Qingcheng? Why did she suddenly run away from her wedding?”
Ming Qian thought for a moment, then picked up her phone and tapped a few times before handing it over. “It’s something like this,” she said, gesturing for Wen Yuxi to look.
Wen Yuxi took the phone and glanced down at the screen, which displayed a chat history between Ming Qian and Wen Qingcheng.
Wen Qingcheng:Â Sister Ming Qian, we made a promise before: if either of us found true love before the wedding, we could break off the engagement.
Wen Qingcheng:Â I’ve found someone now, so I want to honor that promise.
Wen Qingcheng:Â Running away was my only option. I’m sorry for embarrassing you and the Ming Family. I’ll apologize in person once things have calmed down.
Wen Qingcheng:Â Please help me deal with Grandpa Wen and Grandma Ming.
Below this were Ming Qian’s replies:
Ming Qian:Â Okay, stay safe.
Ming Qian:Â Let me know if you need anything.
The exchange was remarkably formal and polite, making it hard to believe it was a conversation between two fiancées.
Wen Yuxi’s expression remained unchanged as she returned the phone. “I’m a little worried about Sister Qingcheng,” she murmured.
Ming Qian shook her head, her tone tinged with helplessness. “I don’t understand why she did this. She could have told me sooner.”
“If she had told me sooner, things wouldn’t have escalated like this.”
Wen Yuxi pursed her lips, deliberately prompting, “If Sister Qingcheng doesn’t return, the wedding can’t proceed. Aren’t you worried at all?”
Ming Qian’s voice was low, gentle, and steady, tinged with a detached rationality and calm, as if she weren’t the one whose fiancée had called off the wedding.
“Qingcheng wants to pursue her own happiness. That’s a good thing. Even if Grandpa Wen’s people bring her back, I won’t go through with the wedding.”
“Then what do we do?” Wen Yuxi asked.
“Cut our losses,” Ming Qian replied. “Announce the cancellation before all the guests arrive.”
“Grandpa and Grandma Ming are so concerned about appearances,” Wen Yuxi said. “They’ll never agree.”
Ming Qian said calmly, “There’s no better way.”
Wen Yuxi met her gaze, her throat tightening. “Actually, there is another way.”
Ming Qian looked at her, surprised and puzzled. “What is it?”
But Wen Yuxi didn’t answer.
The atmosphere fell into silence, making the sound of Grandpa Wen and Grandma Ming’s argument even clearer.
“Wen Shilin,” Grandma Ming snapped angrily, “are you really planning to make a fool of the Ming Family?”
Grandpa Wen was equally furious. “How many times do I have to say it? I genuinely didn’t know the girl was going to run away! We’ve sent people out to find her. What more do you want? Don’t push your luck!”
“Who was it who came begging for a marriage alliance with our family in the first place?” Grandma Ming sneered. “You’d better find her and make her marry properly, or you can forget about any further dealings with the Ming Family!”
Grandpa Wen’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Are you really going to be this extreme?”
The Ming and Wen Families had risen to prominence around the same time. Over centuries of accumulation, both had become deeply rooted, influential clans.
The Ming Family fostered a harmonious environment, emphasizing elite education. Their chosen leaders were all exceptional, driving Ming’s Enterprises to ever-greater heights and strength.
In contrast, the Wen Family remained stubbornly traditional, prioritizing bloodlines over competence, men over women, and Alphas over Omegas. This led to two disastrously extravagant Alpha heirs who nearly squandered the family’s entire fortune.
Objectively speaking, the Wen Family was all bark and no bite these days, and marrying into the Ming Family was indeed a step up for them.
When Grandma Ming initially agreed to the marriage alliance, it was merely out of consideration for past ties and to give the Wen Family face. That’s why she was now so furious, feeling the Wens were arrogant and lacked proper decorum even when seeking a better match.
“Grandpa, Grandma Ming,” Wen Yuxi suddenly spoke up, breaking the tense silence. “I have something to say.”
Su Xi gasped, never expecting her daughter to intervene. She quickly shot Yuxi a warning glance, clearly signaling her to stop.
But Yuxi ignored her mother’s hint and continued, “If we can’t find Sister Qingcheng, what are you planning to do?”
Grandpa Wen’s face darkened. “Children shouldn’t concern themselves with such matters.”
Undeterred, Yuxi replied, “I have a proposal.”
Sensing what was coming, Ming Qian asked softly, “What proposal?”
Yuxi closed her eyes briefly, striving to keep her voice steady. “I’m 21 now, past the legal marriage age, and I’m the Wen Family’s Omega…”
“So I was thinking, if Sister Qingcheng can’t return, I could take her place and complete the wedding.”
Her words drew an immediate scoff from Grandma Ming. “Little girl, trying to snatch leftovers isn’t done like this! How could you ever compare to Qingcheng?”
Wen Yuxi met the old woman’s scornful gaze with a graceful smile. “It’s just a suggestion. Whether you and Grandpa accept it is entirely up to you.”
“I believe this is the solution that minimizes losses for everyone.” She turned to Ming Qian, her voice calm and deliberate as she asked, “What do you think, Sister Ming Qian?”
Ming Qian, a faint smile playing on her lips, didn’t dismiss the suggestion. After a moment of thoughtful consideration, she replied slowly, “I think it’s actually a good idea.”
Grandma Ming remained silent for a long moment.
Grandpa Wen, his expression unreadable, stared at Wen Yuxi for a long time. He stroked his beard, carefully weighing the pros and cons, before finally saying, “Since Qianqian thinks it’s feasible, let’s proceed with it. Ming Yi, what do you say?”
Grandma Ming scoffed but remained silent.
Ming Qian rose, her skirt flowing like water over her slender, pale legs. She asked softly, “Grandma, what do you think?”
Grandma Ming frowned, glanced at her granddaughter, and reluctantly conceded, “If we can’t find Qingcheng by noon, then we’ll proceed as planned.”
“Let’s prepare for both scenarios,” Ming Qian said, summoning her personal assistant. “Have Yuxi’s measurements taken and select several suitable wedding gowns as quickly as possible.”
“Qianqian, there’s no need for all that trouble,” Grandpa Wen waved his hand. “Just have her wear Qingcheng’s gown. Their figures are similar enough.”
Grandma Ming chimed in, “Your Grandpa Wen is right. Why waste time on unnecessary complications?”
“It’s no trouble at all,” Ming Qian replied gently, her tone polite even in disagreement. “A girl’s first wedding should be as grand and memorable as possible.”
