A Canary Has Plenty of Room to Shine
Si Yuhuai sneered: “Trash.”
System: “…”
Who else but you has that kind of stubborn vitality—raised like a stray dog and long since immune to everything!
Si Yuhuai grew up in filth. A few germs like this were nothing to him.
If he were really as fragile as Li Xiu-jie, he’d have been dead from poison ages ago.
But once he was full, Si Yuhuai had the energy to get snide again.
He started with Li Xiu-jie: “You’re on IV drips? Send me a photo.”
Li Xiu-jie thought Boss Si was checking up on him, so he obediently snapped a picture of his IV drip.
Si Yuhuai immediately forwarded it to Jiang Xu.
H: 【So this is your latest way of silencing people? [Image]】
After lunch, Jiang Xu saw the picture and leapt up from the sofa.
【No way! The buns weren’t clean?】
He had chosen that shop from purchase records—it was cheap, plus running discounts thanks to a business war, and located right near Si Yuhuai’s company. That was why he’d picked it.
Who would’ve thought he’d end up poisoning Si Yuhuai again…
Jiang Xu felt guilty for a moment, thinking he had hurt Si Yuhuai by mistake again.
But then he reasoned—if Si Yuhuai were really in serious trouble, he wouldn’t have the strength to come and scold him.
Thinking that, he relaxed and lay back down on the sofa.
Si Yuhuai stared at the screen: “…”
He worried for about half a second and then lay back down?!
So he cares, but not too much.
Then his phone buzzed several times.
Jiang Xu: 【Hubby, are you okay? Should I come keep you company while you get your IV drip?】
Jiang Xu: 【I only bought it because I was afraid you’d skip breakfast and get hungry.】
Jiang Xu: 【Hubby, I swear I didn’t mean it, boo-hoo. Cat-crying emoji】
Jiang Xu: 【Please say something! I’m really worried about you!】
Anyone reading those messages would think Jiang Xu was worried sick. Yet when Si Yuhuai looked up, he saw the same person, supposedly worried, lying sprawled on the sofa, setting his phone aside to gnaw on fruit, laughing like a goose at some dumb variety show.
Si Yuhuai ground his teeth, feeling an odd dissatisfaction.
He snapped: “Those cheap buns of yours looked low-quality from the start. Couldn’t you at least buy something pricier?”
On the screen, Jiang Xu lazily picked up his phone and typed back without expression:
【No money.】
Si Yuhuai transferred five million on the spot.
Jiang Xu nearly smashed his face into the phone, pinching to zoom on the zeros, counting them over five times before pressing his chest, breathing deeply to suppress the giddiness.
Then he took a sip of water, cleared his throat, and typed in a cutesy tone: 【Hubby, you’re too generous! Forget buns—if you want me tomorrow, you can have me!】
Si Yuhuai: “…”
【Send the five million back.】
Jiang Xu replied with a shameless kissy-face emoji, then hugged his phone and spun around the sofa three times in delight.
System: … If he didn’t want buns, he could’ve just said so. Why send money? This host really does love him.
That afternoon, instead of resting, Si Yuhuai actually found himself entertained by chatting with Jiang Xu. When Li Xiu-jie returned after his IV, Si Yuhuai raised a brow:
“Xiu-jie, your health isn’t great lately, huh? Should I…”
Li Xiu-jie panicked: 【What does Boss mean? Does he think I’m useless? Is he planning to fire me? I’m about to get married, my wife’s pregnant, we’ve got loans—he can’t fire me now!】
He blurted out, “No, Boss! I’m perfectly healthy! I could eat buns three days straight and not get sick!”
Si Yuhuai: “…”
Finally satisfied, he smirked mischievously: “I was just going to say, if you’re not feeling well, you could take tomorrow off. Don’t you want that?”
The chance at a holiday, lost just like that: “…”
Favorability -1 -1 -1 -1!
Si Yuhuai, pleased with himself, waved him off: “Go on, take the rest of the day off. Half-day vacation.”
Li Xiu-jie: “???”
【Boss Si… being humane? Is the sun rising from the west tomorrow?】
Si Yuhuai frowned: “Keep running your mouth and you won’t get marriage leave.”
Li Xiu-jie: “!!!”
He was sure his boss had grown a second head. Terrified the offer might be withdrawn any second, he fled on the spot.
That night, Jiang Xu stared at his bank card and giggled to himself on the bed.
So this was what being rich felt like?
No more licking yogurt lids for him!
He knew Si Yuhuai was wealthy, but hadn’t expected this wealthy!
Suddenly, he felt the armory the butler had stocked up seemed too small. What if he failed to serve such a generous patron properly?
Thinking it over, Jiang Xu decided he couldn’t just flirt—he had to be a proper canary. To keep a sugar daddy, you had to know his tastes.
So he asked the butler for Zhou Xuning’s WeChat.
Once added—
Jiang Xu: 【Hi, Zhou Xuning. This is Jiang Xu. Does Si Yuhuai have any particular likes? I want to get to know him better.】
Zhou Xuning: 【???】
Already annoyed from cramming for exams, Zhou Xuning got even more irritated at Jiang Xu’s question. He sent a voice message: “Are you stupid? His hobbies—you’re asking me? Don’t you know already?”
The last time they met, Jiang Xu’s neck had been covered in red marks. Zhou Xuning still remembered clearly.
He hadn’t expected his serious-looking Brother Huai to play that rough.
Handcuffed wrists, marked-up neck…
The thought gave Zhou Xuning goosebumps—and a flicker of pity for Jiang Xu.
Jiang Xu: “I really do want to understand him better!”
Zhou Xuning answered honestly: “All I know is he likes bullying people. Playing tricks.”
Eight years older than him, Si Yuhuai had spent childhood teasing him—making him cry when happy, making him bawl harder when angry, and then cheering up from his misery.
His joy was built on others’ suffering.
Does that count as a hobby? Twisted, really.
Jiang Xu: “Anything else? Like favorite food, games?”
Zhou Xuning: “As far as I know, just you. And by the way, do you not understand how precious college review time is? You’ve already wasted ten minutes of mine!”
Jiang Xu: “…Alright then, sorry for disturbing you.”
Five minutes later, when no follow-up message came, Zhou Xuning angrily opened up a game.
“Damn Jiang Xu, made me lose focus.”
And then he gamed the whole afternoon away…
Jiang Xu realized—even the people closest to Si Yuhuai didn’t actually know his likes. The butler, Zhou Xuning—they were clueless.
Such a mysterious patron!
