- Chapter 2 - Crazy and Foolish
Soaking in the bath for over an hour, Sheng Xining kept her eyes tightly shut the entire time, pretending to doze. She didn’t dare disrespect Professor Ji, not even with a glance—even though she was now her passionately devoted girlfriend.
The shift in roles was something she couldn’t adjust to in just a day or two.
When she stepped out of the bathroom, Sheng Xining tightened her robe in front of the mirror. Ji Bingyan gazed at her reflection from behind and murmured softly, puzzled, “Why are you so red all over?”
Only then did Sheng Xining belatedly realize that her reflection—from her face to her neck, down to her collarbones—was flushed an alarming shade of red. Compared to Ji Bingyan beside her, whose skin was as pale as freshly fallen snow, it was utterly inexplicable.
Tossing out a hurried “The water was too hot,” Sheng Xining fled the bathroom at a brisk pace, exhaling a long, relieved sigh once she was out of Ji Bingyan’s sight.
It had been torture. Over an hour of resisting the urge to steal even a single glance at Professor Ji’s alluring figure in the bath—it was inhumanly difficult!
She wanted to change her clothes and leave immediately, to cool off alone, but then Ji Bingyan’s voice drifted from behind her. The woman’s melodious voice, softened further by the hot bath, carried a lazy, irresistible charm. “Leaving already? Isn’t it a bit early?”
Even as she said this, a car key was already flying toward Sheng Xining, forcing her to catch it.
Was she supposed to drive?
Were they going somewhere today?
Seeing Sheng Xining’s dazed expression again, Ji Bingyan seemed accustomed to these sudden “quirks” of hers.
While applying skincare, she reminded her, “The home visit, remember? Last night, you said you’d drive me today. Don’t tell me you’re backing out again?”
The last few words rolled off Ji Bingyan’s tongue with practiced ease, laced with a hint of grievance.
“…” Sheng Xining immediately understood and inwardly cursed the original Sheng Xining for being such a flaky girlfriend—someone who couldn’t even commit to a simple favor like driving her.
Determined, she raised her voice. “Stop overthinking it. If I said I’d take you, I’ll take you.”
Just then, a phone rang. Ji Bingyan answered—it was a student urging her to come for the home visit.
Sheng Xining was stunned. There were actually students who pestered their teacher for home visits?
It seemed that in this parallel world, Professor Ji’s popularity surpassed even that of the world she came from…
Because of the call, the home visit was moved up. When they reached the garage, Sheng Xining deliberately slowed her pace, lingering behind Ji Bingyan—she had no idea where her car was parked.
After crossing over, she had no memories of the original owner’s life. Every step was a minefield; the slightest misstep could blow her cover.
Once in the driver’s seat, worried that Ji Bingyan might have mentioned the home visit address earlier, Sheng Xining handed her phone to Ji Bingyan with practiced nonchalance, asking her to input the destination. But as the navigation voice chimed in, Sheng Xining’s grip on the steering wheel remained deathly still.
Ji Bingyan: “What’s wrong?”
Sheng Xining, who had held a driver’s license for three years but never once driven on the road, twitched the corner of her mouth. The next second, she gritted her teeth and slammed the accelerator—only to crash into a trash can with a loud clang.
“…”
The air froze in eerie silence once more.
Inside the car, Sheng Xining slowly turned her head, her fingers gripping the wheel bone-white. Summoning her courage, she glanced at Ji Bingyan in the passenger seat, who had gone completely still.
That beautiful profile now seemed encased in a layer of frost, veiled in mist.
“Ahem, well…” Sheng Xining felt she ought to say something to explain the situation that had just occurred.
But every word she uttered seemed to freeze in the air between them.
She noticed Ji Bingyan clenching her fists, her entire body trembling as if struggling to hold something back. Her thick lashes shimmered under the golden morning light streaming through the car window, yet her entire demeanor was icy cold.
Ji Bingyan spoke slowly, each word deliberate: “Sheng. Xi. Ning.”
Having been her student for three years, Sheng Xining had never seen Teacher Ji like this before. Terrified, she held her breath and responded guiltily.
She silently berated herself—what a useless failure she was. As a student, she had scraped by at the bottom of the class; as a corporate drone, she had muddled through each day. Now, after traveling back in time, determined to treat Teacher Ji well, she had “succeeded” in making her lose her temper on the very first day?
Ji Bingyan’s voice was frigid: “What’s your problem? You’ve been acting off since you woke up. What, trying to force me to break up with you?”
Sheng Xining swallowed hard, widening her innocent peach-blossom eyes as she shook her head obediently. “Ji—”
She choked back the word “Teacher” at the last second, correcting herself, “Bingyan, I was just… Oh, don’t be angry, okay? Next time I’ll drive properly—no, no, I mean this time! I promise I’ll…”
Her words tumbled out in a jumbled mess, like a guilty student desperately trying to explain herself to her teacher.
Even the most composed and aloof teacher could deliver a scolding effortlessly—
Ji Bingyan suddenly turned to face her, eyes shimmering with emotion: “Last night, everything was fine. Then you woke up and started acting erratic, ignoring me, pretending to be deaf and blind when I spoke to you.”
“Not just that—you played dumb, drank wine you’d spat in without a second thought, complained the water was too hot even though I adjusted it to your usual temperature, and then drove straight into an innocent trash can to put on a dramatic show. And then—”
Ji Bingyan, prideful, forced herself to steady her trembling voice before continuing, “And then you had the nerve to act all innocent and explain yourself. I know—you won’t bring up breaking up because you want to push me to my limit, make me be the one to say it. Sheng Xining, I see every little trick you’re pulling behind my back!”
“…” Truly, Teacher Ji.
Sheng Xining watched as the cold, hard ice in Ji Bingyan’s eyes gradually melted into something fragile and watery, her gaze brimming with tears as she stared at her with deep affection.
Then, in a voice laced with tears, Ji Bingyan said, “Listen to me, Sheng Xining. Even if you really were as you’re pretending—stupid, crazy, useless, broken—I still wouldn’t leave you.”
Hearing this, Sheng Xining felt not an ounce of warmth in her heart. Instead, it sank abruptly, her face shadowed. After a long pause, she slowly lifted her gaze and asked with deadly seriousness, “Why?”
Why? Why?
Why wouldn’t Teacher Ji leave this terrible woman, why wouldn’t she break up with her? In the end, it had led to such a tragic fate!
Ji Bingyan didn’t answer, turning her face away to present the back of her head.
With a sudden motion, Sheng Xining unbuckled her seatbelt. Fueled by an inexplicable surge of courage, she leaned over to the passenger seat, gripping Ji Bingyan’s arms tightly and shaking her as she demanded an answer—desperate to shake some sense into her beloved Teacher Ji.
When both sides fell silent.
Ji Bingyan raised her pale face, trying hard to conceal her embarrassment, her eyes red as she retorted, “Do you really not know why?”
Hearing this, Sheng Xining’s expression stiffened for a moment. In a flash of realization, a thought occurred to her.
“I…” Sheng Xining’s voice trembled slightly, “Because I was your first love?”
Just saying those words made Sheng Xining’s tongue tingle with heat, her heart fluttering uncontrollably.
But Ji Bingyan quickly turned her face away, her delicate earlobes peeking through her hair, flushed a deep, unmistakable red.
“…”
Well, now Sheng Xining knew the truth—Teacher Ji was an absolute, peerless romantic, a hopelessly pure-hearted fool.
After a long while, both of them calmed down, as if this were just another one of their countless daily arguments.
Following the GPS, Sheng Xining drove toward the student’s home. Fortunately, though her driving was still a bit shaky this time, she managed not to knock over any innocent trash cans—unlike what Teacher Ji had accused her of before.
The home visit ended half an hour later than expected, likely because the ever-popular Teacher Ji had been held back by the enthusiasm of the student’s parents.
Seizing the opportunity, Sheng Xining spent the time practicing her driving like mad. She had gotten her license a while ago but never drove much—partly because she was lazy, a true couch potato who preferred the simplicity of ride-hailing apps.
Luckily, this particular couch potato was at least smart. Back when she took her driving test, she had passed all four sections on the first try.
So now, as she channeled her inner racing god for love and practiced diligently, she got the hang of it after just a few kilometers.
At the moment,
She had parked the car outside the student’s residential complex, patiently waiting for Ji Bingyan to emerge.
Just as she was staring absentmindedly at the sleek Porsche emblem on her steering wheel, Ji Bingyan tapped on the car window from outside, looking pleasantly surprised.
“You waited for me?” Ji Bingyan fastened her seatbelt and happily presented a box of handmade tiramisu to Sheng Xining, her usual aloofness tinged with a hint of endearing eagerness. “The student made it. I turned down all the other gifts, but since you love tiramisu, I accepted this one.”
“Thanks, Ji…” Sheng Xining swallowed the word “Teacher” once again, mentally scolding herself not to call her “Teacher Ji” and make things awkward. Boldly, she amended, “Thanks, darling~”
As their eyes met up close, she took a bite of the tiramisu Ji Bingyan fed her.
That single bite inexplicably filled her heart with such sweetness that she nearly teared up. The deep, long-buried feelings of a three-year—or even longer—crush suddenly found a strange, overwhelming release in that mouthful of tiramisu.
It hit Sheng Xining so hard she could barely handle it.
Pretending nonchalance, Sheng Xining turned her face away, subtly composing herself, though she might have choked up a little. When she looked back at Ji Bingyan, she smiled and asked, “What was the last thing you said just now?”
“Hmm?” Ji Bingyan thought for a moment. “The last thing… I asked if you were waiting for me?”
Was that it? The you who never waited for me, who only gave me rides when I begged—were you really waiting for me this time?
It was almost noon, the sun climbing higher, its golden rays spilling lavishly over the car.
Sheng Xining turned the key in the ignition with one hand and solemnly replied, “Yes, I was waiting for you. No matter how I was in the past, the future me will always wait for you. I’ll keep waiting—no more doubts.”
Initially, Sheng Xining thought Ji Bingyan would be moved by her sudden romantic words. Smugly pleased with herself, she stole a glance from the corner of her eye, only to see Ji Bingyan frozen in the passenger seat for a few seconds before turning to face her with an indifferent expression.
“My turn.”
“?”
“What did you say right before that?”
“…” Sheng Xining was utterly baffled. The line before the romantic words was just cueing her—what was the previous sentence?
How did the conversation suddenly turn into a nesting doll?
A meaningful smile played at the corners of Ji Bingyan’s lips as she reminded her, “The first thing you said when we met earlier. You said ‘thank you,’ Ji…”
Teacher.
“Why are you deliberately avoiding the word ‘teacher’?”
“Afraid it might remind me of something?”
And then purposely changed it to “darling”?
The air trembled violently, as if accustomed to such moments.
Sheng Xining’s mind screamed internally—had Teacher Ji already seen through her so quickly?
At 16, student Sheng Xining couldn’t fool Teacher Ji by skipping homework. Now, at 24, the supposedly mature adult Sheng Xining still couldn’t deceive her?!
Her brain short-circuited as she mechanically repeated, “I… did I… deliberately avoid… t-t-teacher?”
Ji Bingyan shot her a cool, penetrating look. “You’re not going to back out of taking the teaching certification exam, are you?”
Sheng Xining exhaled in relief: “???”
So last night, her scumbag girlfriend Sheng Xining—for some unknown reason—had indeed gotten extremely drunk, consuming what could be considered a lethal dose of alcohol before stumbling to Ji Bingyan’s place past 1 a.m.
Overjoyed, she had flailed her arms and spouted all sorts of sweet nothings to please Ji Bingyan.
Like a shaman performing a ritual, the scumbag Sheng Xining had waved three fingers, her hair disheveled as she bounced on the bed, swearing solemnly.
She declared that she would take her beloved girlfriend Ji Bingyan’s life advice to heart—no more mingling with spoiled rich kids, no more lazing around indulging in hedonism. She would turn over a new leaf, find a proper career!
—
“Darling, I solemnly swear to you—I’m going to take the teaching certification exam! I’ll follow in your footsteps to become an outstanding educator, accompany you to work during the day, and sleep with you at night! I’ll be with you 24/7! Never leave you, loving you with every second of my life! I’ll love you forever!”
Fifteen minutes later,
The flashy red Porsche was already parked in front of a large bookstore specializing in exam prep materials.
Sheng Xining held up “her own” phone, her expression unreadable, as the audio of her drunken, delirious vows poured relentlessly from the device, filling the entire car.
Ji Bingyan distanced herself: “You insisted on recording it—not me.”
Though her words said one thing, her eyes betrayed a restrained flicker of newfound affection and hope…
Instantly, a fire ignited in Sheng Xining’s chest, and she slammed her phone down hard!
Damn it, that scumbag woman really knew how to manipulate and deceive—what the hell was this?!
