Transmigrated as a Cannon Fodder Wife A in Ancient Times - Chapter 12
Chapter 12
Wei Lan walked back listlessly. At first, she didn’t feel it, thinking only some pheromones were taken. Now, the more she walked, the more tired she became. She couldn’t finish carving her jade and needed to return to her bedroom to sleep.
When Wei Lan reached Fuqu Pavilion, cold sweat beaded on her cheeks.
Li Zhufeng saw Wei Lan return and signaled Zhao Linghui. They hurried to greet her.
Li Zhufeng asked eagerly, “Lord, how is the lady? Why didn’t you stay overnight with her?”
She wasn’t truly concerned for Wei Lan. She feared Wei Lan’s lack of favor with Lu Zijin would affect their own lives as servants.
Wei Lan glanced at her, glared at Li Zhufeng, and said, “Have someone prepare hot water. I want to bathe and rest.”
Li Zhufeng saw Wei Lan’s poor mood and panicked. Had their lord angered the lady and been kicked out?
She glanced at Wei Lan again, her gaze falling on Wei Lan’s swollen bonding mark, marked with several prominent bite marks, showing she had been bitten heavily.
Seeing Li Zhufeng stare, Wei Lan frowned. “Li Mammy, seen enough?”
“Yes, yes. This old servant will have people prepare water for the lord. Please rest in your room,” Li Zhufeng said, signaling Zhao Linghui and calling servants to prepare.
Zhao Linghui hurried to the kitchen, brewed fresh tea, and brought it to Wei Lan’s room.
Zhao Linghui said eagerly, “Lord, rest and have some tea.”
Seeing her eagerness, Wei Lan guessed the servants’ thoughts. She poured a cup of tea and drank it in one gulp.
Zhao Linghui stood by, seizing the chance to ask, “Lord, did you have a disagreement with the lady?”
Wei Lan nodded calmly. “Yes.”
Wasn’t it all unpleasant? Lu Zijin bit her, threatened her with silver, and then kicked her out, not letting her rest. She was thoroughly displeased!
“She kicked me out,” Wei Lan said, calmly drinking another cup. Being sent back was fine; it kept her away from Lu Zijin, that handsy, infuriating woman.
Hearing this, Zhao Linghui’s expression shifted. She looked at Wei Lan as if she were hopeless mud.
“Oh, Lord, the lady’s rain dew period was such an opportunity. You should stay by her side daily to gain her favor,” Zhao Linghui said urgently.
Wei Lan found it amusing. “Her favor? No thanks. The farther we stay, the better. Things are fine as they are.”
“Lord, I don’t mean to overstep, but you’re married into the Lu Mansion. Your future depends on the lady. You should try harder with her,” Zhao Linghui urged.
“You’re overthinking. I’m happy as is. Let Lu Zijin leave me alone, and I won’t bother her. Now, check if the water’s ready. Tell them to bring it quickly,” Wei Lan said. She was sweaty and wanted to bathe, unwilling to talk more with Zhao Linghui.
Soon, the servants brought bathwater. Wei Lan soaked in the hot water to relax. She touched her bonding mark gently; it still hurt.
Lu Zijin seemed aloof usually, but her bite was relentless. Wei Lan’s neck ached terribly.
Thinking of earlier events, Wei Lan felt angry, but she had no choice. She needed her comfortable life. A few bites were tolerable.
She bathed and prepared to rest in bed.
Meanwhile, after sending Wei Lan away, Lu Zijin slept. She woke in the afternoon.
Upon waking, Lu Zijin felt a moment of panic. Unlike past rain dew periods, she felt refreshed, not uncomfortable.
Recalling what she did to Wei Lan, Lu Zijin’s ear tips reddened. She was usually assertive but not to that extent. Had she scared Wei Lan?
Thinking of how she bullied and bit Wei Lan, Lu Zijin’s lips curved faintly. She hadn’t expected Wei Lan’s pheromones to smell so pleasant—clean and pure. Wei Lan’s obedient behavior, grumbling softly at most, pleased her.
Lu Zijin’s eyes softened. She called out, “Qing Zhi, have someone prepare water. I want to bathe.”
“Yes, Miss,” Qing Zhi’s voice came quickly. She arranged for water.
Soon, the water was ready. Lu Zijin bathed, then had the maids replace the bedding with fresh linens.
“Fetch the unfinished account books from my study,” Lu Zijin said, sipping tea.
Qing Zhi glanced at Lu Zijin’s expression and cautioned, “Miss, you’re still in your rain dew period. Don’t overwork.”
“It’s fine. Get them,” Lu Zijin said, looking at Qing Zhi from the table.
Qing Zhi sent someone to retrieve the items.
Lu Zijin spent the afternoon handling business.
She ate a simple dinner and dealt with mansion affairs. The feverish feeling returned.
Lu Zijin held her forehead, cold sweat on her cheeks.
Yun Xiang, standing guard, helped Lu Zijin up. “Miss, are you alright?”
“Quick, call for Deng Jin,” Yun Xiang shouted outside.
Someone immediately went to fetch Deng Jin. Several maids entered Lu Zijin’s bedroom, helping Yun Xiang move her to the bed.
Lu Zijin felt the feverish sensation return. She thought of Wei Lan’s clean scent. Biting her again would surely feel better.
“Quick, fetch the lord,” Lu Zijin said, her spirit low and voice weak. Perhaps she shouldn’t have spent her energy on mansion affairs that afternoon. The rain dew period required caution.
Yun Xiang, the maid by her side, panicked at Lu Zijin’s request for Wei Lan. Did the lady actually favor this useless person’s pheromones? It was already the hour of Hai. Would the lady let that useless person stay overnight?
“Miss, the lord isn’t worthy of you. Why call her?” Yun Xiang said, twisting her handkerchief.
Lu Zijin frowned at her. “What? You make decisions for me now?”
Hearing this, Yun Xiang broke into a cold sweat. “This servant didn’t mean that. I’ll send for the lord.”
Yun Xiang hurried out and called several maids. “You lot, go fetch the lord now. Be quick.”
“Yes,” the maids replied, grabbing lanterns and heading to Fuqu Pavilion.
Yun Xiang rolled her eyes. She refused to believe a useless person could catch the lady’s eye.
