Transmigrated as a Cannon Fodder Wife A in Ancient Times - Chapter 20
Chapter 20
Lu Zijin did not know that Wei Lan actually wanted to eat her into poverty, but this was very difficult because Lu Zijin was too rich. Even if Wei Lan ate eighteen meals a day, with every meal being lavish, her wife would still remain a wealthy woman.
Wei Lan saw Lu Zijin get off her, so she propped herself up and smiled at Lu Zijin. “Madam, I will go to the next room now. Please ask them to make me lots of delicious food.”
“Alright, I will arrange it immediately,” Lu Zijin replied, amused by her. The Qianyuan she married loved money and delicious food.
“That’s great. I’m leaving then,” Wei Lan said, satisfied with the answer. She got up, put on her shoes, and then wore her dress.
After Wei Lan left, Lu Zijin lifted the bed curtains and called out, “Qing Zhi, come in.”
The little maid outside quickly went to fetch Qing Zhi, who arrived shortly after.
Qing Zhi bowed to Lu Zijin before speaking. “Miss, what are your orders?”
Lu Zijin looked at her and said, “The lord will stay in the next room tonight. You don’t need to fetch her spare clothes from Fuqu Pavilion. Just take a set of mine. Also, prepare more food for her dinner tonight. She has been working hard these days.”
“Yes,” Qing Zhi replied, bowing quickly, but she stood still.
Lu Zijin, being kind and perceptive, raised her eyes and asked, “What’s wrong? Is there something else you need to tell me?”
Qing Zhi hurriedly bowed again to Lu Zijin and said, “This servant shouldn’t speak out of turn, but the lord is kind, and I’m afraid she didn’t tell you about this matter.”
“What exactly happened?” Lu Zijin asked.
“At noon today, when this servant and the lord came from Fuqu Pavilion, we met Commander Cao on the way. Commander Cao mocked and ridiculed the lord, refusing to listen to her. The lord got very angry. She was already feeling unwell, and after Commander Cao upset her, she felt even worse,” Qing Zhi explained, recounting the noon incident in detail to Lu Zijin.
Lu Zijin slightly furrowed her brows and said faintly, “She indeed didn’t tell me about this.”
Recalling Wei Lan’s puppy-like tail-wagging demeanor earlier, Lu Zijin shook her head with a smile. Her lord only thought about delicious food and probably forgot all about the grievance.
Qing Zhi felt a bit uneasy after speaking, as she was Lu Zijin’s maid and shouldn’t meddle in the lord’s affairs. She worried that Lu Zijin might blame her for overstepping.
But Lu Zijin soon spoke, “You did well. The lord hasn’t stayed in a place like the Lu Mansion before and doesn’t know that in such a grand household, even servants step on the low and flatter the high. Send someone to keep an eye out and ensure the lord doesn’t suffer any grievances. As for Cao Qiushuang’s matter, I will deal with it myself after my rain dew period passes.”
Qing Zhi sighed in relief and bowed to Lu Zijin. “Yes, Miss, I will leave now.”
“Alright,” Lu Zijin responded. Although she had no feelings for Wei Lan, Wei Lan was, after all, the person she married to silence gossip. Anyone who dared to disrespect Wei Lan, like Cao Qiushuang, indeed needed a lesson.
As for the servants in Wei Lan’s courtyard, Lu Zijin had been cold toward Wei Lan these days. She wondered if those who flattered the high and stepped on the low had bullied Wei Lan. If she had free time in a few days, she might visit Wei Lan to check.
This wasn’t because Lu Zijin had changed her opinion of Wei Lan. She simply felt that Wei Lan was her person, and even beating a dog required looking at its owner. If those people didn’t take Wei Lan seriously, they might soon disregard Lu Zijin as well.
Lu Zijin thought for a moment but soon closed her eyes to rest. Wei Lan had just left, and the bed still carried the scent of fresh snow. Since no one was in the room, Lu Zijin grabbed the blanket Wei Lan had used, brought it to her nose, and sniffed. She instantly felt surrounded by fresh snow.
After thinking, Lu Zijin simply moved to the side where Wei Lan had slept. Smelling Wei Lan’s fragrance, she felt she could sleep more soundly.
Meanwhile, Wei Lan went to the next room. She waited for the maids and servants to prepare hot water, planning to bathe, eat a big meal at Lu Zijin’s place, and then rest.
Soon, someone knocked on the door. Qing Zhi’s voice came from outside.
“Lord, the hot water is ready. Would you like to bathe now?”
“Yes, I’ll bathe now,” Wei Lan replied.
Qing Zhi pushed open the door and entered, followed by several maids and servants carrying wooden buckets. The maids and servants went to the large tub, while Qing Zhi held a wooden tray with several brand-new dresses.
She bowed to Wei Lan and said, “Lord, these are Miss’s dresses, all freshly ironed. You can wear them after your bath.”
“Alright, I understand,” Wei Lan said, pouring herself a cup of water. She took a sip and her eyes lit up. The tea seemed to have honey or something similar, tasting much better than the tea in her courtyard.
Unable to resist, Wei Lan drank two more cups. She thought everything at Madam’s place was better. No wonder she was a wealthy woman.
Soon, Wei Lan went to bathe. She dismissed the maids and soaked comfortably, thinking her life was quite pleasant, except for the painful bite on her neck. Everything else was fine.
She soaked for a while before getting out and putting on Lu Zijin’s dress, a light orange one perfect for summer.
Wei Lan keenly noticed that even Lu Zijin’s dresses were more comfortable than hers. Truly a wealthy heroine.
After bathing, Qing Zhi came to ask when to serve dinner. Wei Lan told her to serve it now.
Soon, maids brought in trays and placed delicate dishes on the table, including two soups.
Wei Lan’s eyes sparkled at the sight of the food. As expected, the meals at Lu Zijin’s place were delicious.
She immediately started eating. The roasted lamb chops were from a freshly slaughtered lamb, with a tender texture. After eating a few pieces, Wei Lan tried other dishes, each exquisitely prepared.
She served herself a bowl of fish soup and noticed it contained medicinal herbs, giving it a faint herbal taste. It wasn’t unpleasant and perfectly masked the fishy smell.
Looking at the dishes, Wei Lan’s appetite grew. She ate heartily at Lu Zijin’s expense before going to bed to rest.
Meanwhile, Lu Zijin slept until the hour of Xu. The scent of fresh snow in the blanket had faded, but she felt much better.
Lu Zijin propped herself up and called out, “Light the lamp.”
The maid on duty outside immediately came in to light the lamp. Qianxue, who was in charge, asked, “Miss, would you like to bathe? Or shall I serve dinner first?”
“I’ll bathe first,” Lu Zijin said, lifting the bed curtains and getting out of bed. She looked at Qianxue and asked, “Where’s the lord? Has she eaten?”
“She has eaten and is already asleep,” Qianxue replied quickly.
“Alright, have someone prepare the water,” Lu Zijin said, walking to the table. She poured herself a cup of warm tea. Her tea was kept warm around the clock, with maids replacing it regularly. Since Lu Zijin disliked bitter tea, the maids always added honey to sweeten it slightly.
Soon, the bathwater was ready. Lu Zijin bathed in the tub and asked the maids to change all the bedding, as it was too saturated with Wei Lan’s fragrance and her own sweat.
After bathing, Qianxue had the maids serve dinner.
Lu Zijin was tired of these dishes. Unlike Wei Lan, she only ate a few bites of each before having them cleared away.
Lu Zijin went to bed early. She had fallen behind on many matters these days. If her rain dew period ended tomorrow, she would need to handle the mansion and shop affairs quickly.
As she lay down, she felt something was missing. Sleeping like this didn’t feel as comfortable as when she slept in Wei Lan’s arms that afternoon.
Lu Zijin lightly bit her lower lip, warning herself not to think too much. It must be because her rain dew period hadn’t ended yet. Otherwise, she wouldn’t keep thinking about Wei Lan.
