Transmigrated as a Scum Alpha Cannon Fodder, Sweetly Pampering the Heroine - Chapter 12
Since Xu Jinman had transmigrated, she had acted entirely according to her own whims. The reason was simple: the Xu Family’s power was at its peak, and she didn’t need to care about others’ opinions. Even if Lu Yun, who knew the original Xu Jinman well, wanted to see her, she could simply refuse.
Shen Shu was different.
Xu Jinman genuinely wanted Shen Shu to be well.
The whole charade about fighting over the family fortune was merely to dispel Shen Shu’s suspicions.
But in Shen Shu’s eyes, Xu Jinman remained the same person who had once tried to harm her. It was true that one’s fundamental nature couldn’t change so quickly, a point Xu Jinman hadn’t fully considered.
Shen Shu had given her a new idea.
It was just a bit… bold.
“You’re really willing to believe I have split personality disorder?”
Shen Shu looked at her as if to say, Because it’s you, any mental illness would seem perfectly normal.
Xu Jinman wasn’t one to invite awkwardness. If Shen Shu was willing to believe it, she was willing to admit it. A perfect match.
The only problem was that this facade felt like a Russian nesting doll, one layer after another. Especially the matter of her differentiation—Shen Shu was as meticulous as a hair’s breadth. Since they had decided to keep it hidden for now, they had to keep it tightly sealed.
A gentle breeze rustled past, and a hospital gown landed beside her. Shen Shu glanced sideways. “If you don’t want to stay, there’s no need to force yourself.”
Shen Shu replied tersely, “My mother bribed the nurses.”
The moment she left, Wei Wuqing would receive a phone call.
Given Wei Wuqing’s methods, such behavior was hardly surprising—merely disgusting. Yet Shen Shu still clung to some lingering attachment to that family.
Xu Jinman said, “Go. I’ll handle everything else.”
Shen Shu paused briefly, then pretended not to hear and walked to the adjacent caregiver’s bed, placing the toiletries Wei Wuqing had just brought beside it.
Seeing this, Xu Jinman fell silent. Shen Shu’s heart held too many secrets; even after reading part of her novel, Xu Jinman couldn’t claim to fully understand or decipher her true feelings.
Shen Shu’s life seemed destined to be heavy and oppressive from birth.
That familiar, delicate sense of empathy and tenderness welled up in Xu Jinman’s heart once more.
Only after repeatedly confirming with Professor Qin that Shen Shu’s continued stay posed no risks did Xu Jinman finally relax. She loathed that feeling of losing control.
A sea-green curtain separated the hospital bed from the companion bed. The bathroom and toilet could only be accessed by passing the companion bed.
Xu Jinman listened to the rustling sounds of Shen Shu tidying the bedding beside her. She got out of bed with her change of clothes, her feet unconsciously drifting toward the curtain. Before she could make out Shen Shu’s figure, the other woman suddenly collided into her arms.
A sweet fragrance filled the air with each breath.
A warmth spread through Xu Jinman’s chest.
Shen Shu’s body stiffened slightly. Reacting quickly, she raised her hands to protect herself from direct contact with Xu Jinman. The moment her palm brushed against Xu Jinman’s body, Shen Shu instantly withdrew and pushed away.
Xu Jinman coughed softly. “I’m going to take a shower,” she said, stepping past Shen Shu as if nothing had happened.
“You…”
“Hmm?” Xu Jinman glanced back.
Shen Shu glanced at her hand. “Can you get it wet?”
“Just a quick rinse to wash off the sweat,” Xu Jinman replied. “I’ll be careful.”
Shen Shu fell silent.
She wasn’t concerned about Xu Jinman’s well-being; she was simply worried about the hassle if Xu Jinman developed a fever from getting her hand wet later that night.
The shower turned on, and steam quickly filled the bathroom, clouding the mirror. With her left hand injured, Xu Jinman carefully raised her arm and washed slowly with one hand.
Tilting her head back, she let the water droplets roll down her smooth skin, her heartbeat gradually slowing.
Xu Jinman recalled the instinctive flush on Shen Shu’s earlobes when she had pulled away earlier.
In a sudden, almost convulsive motion, Xu Jinman reached out and touched the spot where Shen Shu had been. She grasped it firmly, but the sensation from moments ago was completely gone.
Could this be because I’ve differentiated into an Alpha? Is it making me more susceptible to lust?
Xu Jinman lowered the water temperature a few degrees.
In the spacious, forty-square-meter VIP hospital room, the only sound was the rustling of paper.
Xu Jinman’s face was etched with exhaustion. Her phone buzzed incessantly, and she knew without looking who it was.
Ever since she had deleted all of Yin Xue’s contact information, Yin Xue had started using different numbers to reach her, either Song Ronghui’s or Chen Bo’s.
After blocking those numbers, Yin Xue had begun calling from unfamiliar numbers. Xu Jinman hung up immediately, but within seconds, a text message arrived:
Xu Jinman, you can’t do this to me.
What do you see in her? You used to hate Omegas. How can you like her?
Manman, are you really going to leave me?
Manman… I was wrong. I won’t cause any more trouble. Where are you? Can I come see you?
After reading the messages, Xu Jinman paused before replying with a firm, “Don’t contact me again.” If she wanted a clean break, she couldn’t give Yin Xue any hope.
After blocking her, Xu Jinman glanced toward the curtained-off area. The overhead light was already off, and through the curtain, she could faintly see a tranquil shadow beside the warm yellow glow of a desk lamp, along with the occasional rustling of pages.
Half an hour had passed since they last spoke.
Curious, Xu Jinman asked, “What are you reading?”
After a long pause, a cool voice replied, “A contract.”
Xu Jinman responded, “Get some rest. Good night.”
Unexpectedly, there was no further movement from the other side. Xu Jinman lay down and closed her eyes, the rhythmic sound of fingertips brushing against paper steadily penetrating her eardrums.
A few minutes later, Xu Jinman slowly opened her eyes.
The rustling had stopped some time ago. Had she finished reading?
“Will that person… come back?” Shen Shu suddenly asked.
Her voice, as clear and cool as water, barely betrayed the subtle undercurrent of emotion beneath its surface.
Xu Jinman’s heart clenched for a moment.
“No,” Xu Jinman replied.
The finality of her words seemed to sink into the spacious hospital room like a tangible weight.
“She won’t come back. I promise,” Xu Jinman repeated.
As she finished speaking, Xu Jinman saw the dark shadow projected on the curtain shift slightly. After a few seconds, the room suddenly plunged into darkness as the lights were switched off.
In the middle of the night, Xu Jinman’s left hand brushed against something, jolting her awake. She couldn’t fall back asleep immediately.
Moonlight streamed through the partially drawn curtains, casting dappled shadows across the silent room. After a moment, she quietly slipped out of bed. Emerging from the bathroom, Xu Jinman paused by Shen Shu’s bed.
Shen Shu had always been a light sleeper, struggling to rest well outside her own space, especially with another person in the room.
And that person was Xu Jinman.
She had barely slept.
Her breath involuntarily drew in the crisp, sun-drenched scent, as pure as a cloudless sky. Then, cool fingers gently gripped her hand.
Shen Shu desperately suppressed the urge to jerk away. Though everything seemed logical, she still didn’t trust Xu Jinman and chose to take a risk.
The hand felt soft and cool, likely having just been washed.
The icy touch vanished, replaced by a gentle grip on her wrist. Perhaps because of the sleeve, she didn’t feel the cold this time.
The blanket was tucked over her hand, shielding it from the room’s chill.
Shen Shu felt the blanket over her chest being lifted. Her fingers tightened slightly, and the blanket finally settled just above her collarbone.
The moment Xu Jinman left, Shen Shu opened her eyes.
She had reviewed Xu Jinman’s medical records and confirmed her Omega status. If Xu Jinman had truly changed, their so-called collaboration might not be out of the question.
Shortly after getting into bed, Xu Jinman felt drowsiness creeping back. In her hazy state, she dreamed of someone pressing down on her, their damp, heavy breath ghosting across her neck. Subconsciously, she assumed it was just like before—the result of overthinking and letting her mind wander. Until—
She smelled the overwhelming scent of alcohol…
Shen Shu never drank.
Xu Jinman jolted awake, her eyes snapping open. She shoved the figure downward with all her might!
But the person reacted with astonishing speed, lunging onto her. Their unsteady voice, thick with the stench of alcohol, rasped, “Manman, don’t push me away.”
Yin Xue?!
At that moment, the wall lights in the hospital room flickered on.
The curtain of the adjacent caregiver’s bed was drawn back, revealing Shen Shu’s wide-awake face. “It’s getting a bit noisy. You two carry on. I’ll step out.”
