- Chapter 10 - Catch Turtles
Qian Ming was already panicking, but he stubbornly clung to the belief that she was just a low-level employee hiding behind someone else’s authority.
After all, he had recognized everyone else except her.
But how could it be her?
She wasn’t wearing any of the well-known luxury brands, nor even the niche high-end labels. There was no way she could be that person.
The next moment, his phone vibrated.
His heart pounded violently, as if he were about to lose something precious. A wave of intense unease washed over him.
His uncle’s furious roar erupted from the phone: “What the hell did you do? The project team’s already called me!”
“Ah, Uncle… what?!” Qian Ming stammered.
“Why have all the clients I was supposed to be negotiating with been reassigned to you?”
“I… I don’t know!”
His uncle’s voice had calmed down by the time Qian Ming turned back. “Did you offend Rao Jinqing?”
Qian Ming’s face paled, his hands trembling slightly, but he stubbornly asked, “Who…”
“Who else could it be? If you don’t want to lose everything, resign now. If you’ve crossed her, she won’t rest until you’re ruined. She wouldn’t be a Rao if she didn’t make you pay.”
“But…” Qian Ming began, his voice trembling.
The line went dead, replaced by a busy signal.
He looked up in a panic, just as Rao Jinqing’s secretary turned around and gave him a polite nod.
Qian Ming collapsed onto the floor, muttering to himself, “I’m finished.”
He and General Manager Dong were only distant relatives. Their families had been close in his grandmother’s generation, but by his own time, the connection had faded to almost nothing.
He’d only gotten this job because his mother had begged repeatedly for it.
Rao Jinqing’s reputation for ruthless retaliation was well-known. After today’s stunt, she would surely blacklist him in the industry.
And those people… He could feel their eyes burning into his face.
It was all their fault for not warning him earlier, and now they were just standing there, enjoying the spectacle.
“What are you staring at?” he roared.
If he were still the Qian Ming who had the board’s backing, such arrogance would have been acceptable.
But unfortunately, he’d spoken too loudly during his phone call.
One man chuckled, “We’re watching a stray dog get kicked out. It’s quite entertaining. What’s it to you?”
The Brit sat slumped at the negotiation table, barely lifting a hand when Rao Jinqing entered. His face remained cold and impassive as he said nothing.
Rao Jinqing, as if oblivious to his icy demeanor, smiled and asked, “Mr. Roba, what’s wrong?”
In truth, she had already heard about the situation from her secretary.
This arrogant Brit wanted to break their contract.
He had received a better offer from another company, one that offered lower prices and greater concessions.
And that company wasn’t just any competitor—it was the Chi Family’s company, located just a left turn from the Rao Corporation.
Both the Chi and Rao Families had risen to prominence in the last century through department stores. Later, they both capitalized on the real estate boom. But as the tide of the new era surged, these two families, who had sailed together for decades, formally parted ways due to differing philosophies.
The Chi Family continued to focus on real estate while diversifying into various other industries. Father Rao, however, recognized the burgeoning potential of artificial intelligence and shifted his focus to technology.
Unfortunately, Father Rao’s plans were thwarted in their early stages by fierce opposition from the board of directors and the Rao Family patriarch. By the time he had finally gained enough authority to act independently, he had already passed away.
Now, decades later, the Chi Family had finally begun to recognize the benefits of new technologies.
This Brit was the key step for both the Rao and Chi Families to enter the realm of cutting-edge technology.
He possessed a cutting-edge technology currently unavailable in China.
The Brit was cunning. After yesterday’s agreement, he hadn’t signed the contract, instead using the excuse of needing to re-evaluate the product’s value to postpone the signing until today.
Robert, the Brit, said, “Miss Rao, I still have some reservations about the profit-sharing arrangement. I’d like to discuss it in detail again.”
Rao Jinqing replied coldly, “The profit-sharing terms were finalized yesterday. They cannot be changed. Mr. Robert, if I recall correctly, both parties confirmed the agreement yesterday.”
With his true intentions exposed, Robert saw no further need to probe her.
He knew Rao Jinqing was aware of his scheme, but he wanted to gauge her reaction and determine if his company could secure the lion’s share of the profits by exploiting their mutual greed.
Robert: “Then I can only regret that our collaboration has fallen through.”
“Mr. Robert, I believe you’ve overlooked one crucial detail.”
Under Robert’s visibly puzzled gaze, Rao Jinqing spoke calmly, “Last night, immediately after our companies reached an agreement, I publicly announced the good news. And now…”
She glanced down at the exquisitely crafted watch on her wrist. “The media should be arriving shortly.”
Robert’s face twisted into a grimace.
“You’re really something!”
