Her voice was too agitated.
Rao Jinqing glanced back at her and chuckled softly.
Lin Qinglian retracted the foot she had stepped forward with.
She stood rigidly, her feet pressed together, then drooped her head in dejection, as if embarrassed. Her fingers poked at each other in circles.
She looked like a wilted little flower, especially with her pitiful expression.
Feeling genuinely sorry for her, Rao Jinqing decided to stop teasing her.
“Let’s go,” Rao Jinqing said, turning to walk out.
Lin Qinglian gave a slightly embarrassed hum and quickly followed behind her, her steps light and brisk.
The driver had been waiting at the entrance for some time. As soon as he saw Rao Jinqing’s figure, he immediately opened the car door and waited for her.
He hadn’t met Lin Qinglian before, and seeing the person behind Rao Jinqing left him momentarily uncertain.
Fortunately, President Rao, a master of reading people, immediately sensed his hesitation.
“She’ll sit next to me,” Rao Jinqing said.
Then she named a villa district with an eye-watering price tag, instructing the driver to stop there later.
Just as the driver acknowledged, Lin Qinglian asked curiously, “Where are we going?”
“Aren’t you going home?” Rao Jinqing replied.
“My home is at xxx,” Lin Qinglian said.
Rao Jinqing frowned.
She wondered if she had misheard. How could Lin Qinglian mention a place she had never even heard of?
Lin Qinglian blinked her teary eyes and repeated the place name.
Rao Jinqing confirmed it was a place so cheap she’d never even heard of it.
The driver, sitting in the driver’s seat, awkwardly tapped the navigation app.
Rao Jinqing was curious. “You don’t live with Chi Jiheng?”
Why would I live with that rotten cucumber? Lin Qinglian thought. Wouldn’t that just make things uncomfortable for me?
Though she had little perception of emotions, the emotions radiating from Chi Jiheng the next day nearly suffocated her.
Lin Qinglian tilted her head. “Why would I live with him?”
This revealed that their relationship wasn’t as harmonious as it seemed on the surface.
Rao Jinqing quickly seized the information she needed from Lin Qinglian’s words.
“I misunderstood,” Rao Jinqing said.
With the destination confirmed, the driver immediately floored the accelerator.
The car, with its excellent braking system, shot forward like a spring.
Lin Qinglian stared in a daze as the scenery blurred past.
The driver drove fast but smoothly, maintaining a steady pace through dozens of traffic lights.
He first dropped Lin Qinglian off at her home, then took Rao Jinqing to her company.
When Rao Jinqing entered the office, a chorus of complaints filled the air.
Accompanying the department head’s promise of triple pay was a male voice grumbling.
“Triple pay? I don’t give a damn about that little bit of money. I’m having fun here! Is that supposed to be enough to toss to a beggar?”
Rao Jinqing quietly walked up behind him, watching coldly as he ranted.
The employees in front of him glanced at her, their eyes flickering, and were about to speak.
Rao Jinqing pressed a slender finger to her red lips, signaling them to be quiet.
The group lowered their heads, silently suppressing their laughter.
The man was unfamiliar, likely a recent hire.
The sharp-eyed secretary whispered in her ear, “He’s Chairman Qian’s cousin.”
That explained everything.
Though the Rao Family company bore the Rao name, since her parents’ deaths, it was only a quarter Rao in reality.
The other directors, who held vast shares, formed a power triangle with her grandmother.
She was merely her grandmother’s most useful tool until Rao Songning came of age.
The man seemed pleased by the group’s silence in his presence.
What was Rao Jinqing anyway? He thought. She’ll have to marry someday. Does she think she can take this entire company as her dowry? Not only would the Rao Family never agree, but the board of directors would never allow it.
She’s just a temporary figurehead. Why should I have to bow and scrape before her?
“Hey, do I look like I’m short on cash?”
Normally, these people would immediately flatter him, intimidated by his uncle’s position. But today, they stood before him, silent as cicadas in winter.
He was deeply displeased.
“Who does Rao Jinqing think she is? In a few years, she’ll be married off anyway. Instead of killing yourselves with overtime to please her, you’d be better off buttering me up. If I’m in a good mood, I might even get my uncle to promote you to supervisor.”
“I may not be much, but you can leave now.”
A cold voice sounded from behind him.
He froze in shock, turning to see a stranger. Relief washed over him instantly, completely oblivious to the suppressed laughter in the eyes of those behind him.
Just a junior employee, he thought. I memorized all the higher-ups on my first day. These underlings don’t matter.
He smugly assumed the newcomer knew his identity and was trying to blackmail him. She’s got the wrong idea. Does she even know who my uncle is?
Such audacity… But judging by her looks…
His gaze lingered greedily on Rao Jinqing, scanning her up and down several times.
She’s got the looks to back it up. Too flashy, though—she’d attract too much attention. Still, she’s undeniably stunning, especially when she glares at me like that.
A sudden itch rose in his heart.
“If you become my girlfriend, I’ll overlook your blackmail today.”
The moment he spoke, the others dared not laugh, instead casting pitying glances his way.
They still remembered the last person who dared to gossip about Rao Jinqing behind her back. Within ten days, that person had been assigned a month’s worth of tasks. When they failed to complete them, the company legally terminated their employment. The individual was then taken away for leaking confidential information.
Ultimately, they were forced to sell everything they owned to compensate the company for the losses they had caused.
Rao Jinqing stared at him with icy eyes. Only then did fear belatedly dawn on him. He instinctively took a step back before suddenly snapping out of it.
Was he really intimidated by a mere junior employee?
After a long pause, Rao Jinqing scoffed, “Such a capable general. Remember to assign him plenty of tasks.”
She doesn’t even see me as a threat!
With a nod, the secretary beside her immediately made a call.
Qian Ming: “Do you even know who my uncle is?!”
The two ignored him completely, walking past him as if he didn’t exist.
The secretary hurried after Rao Jinqing.
As they passed Qian Ming, she waved her phone at him, smiling sweetly. “Do you know who she is?”
