Transmigrated Into an Ancient Filial Piety Novel as a Scumbag Alpha (GL) - Chapter 10
Chapter 10
Ji Huan demonstrated and explained as she set up five or six traps. After that, she let Jiang Yubai try making one herself. Then Ji Huan stood up and continued searching for small animals.
Soon, Ji Huan heard the sound of a pheasant in a pile of dry grass. She shot two arrows but missed the pheasant. Ji Huan had to retrieve the arrows.
Fortunately, there seemed to be many rabbits in the area. Ji Huan quickly spotted a small rabbit in the dry grass. She swiftly nocked an arrow and shot. With the experience from earlier, Ji Huan aimed accurately this time and hit the rabbit in the grass with one shot.
Jiang Yubai’s face lit up with a hint of joy. Words slipped out of her mouth, “Sister, you hit it!”
Seeing Jiang Yubai happy, Ji Huan’s eyes curved slightly. “Yes, I’ll go check if the rabbit is badly hurt.”
Jiang Yubai looked at Ji Huan with some confusion and hurriedly followed her to see the rabbit.
Ji Huan picked up the rabbit from the ground and saw it was already dead. She sighed and said, “It’s dead. What a pity. But it looks plump, with plenty of meat. It should taste good roasted.”
Jiang Yubai looked at the small gray rabbit in Ji Huan’s hand, and her eyes dimmed. Even if they caught a rabbit, she would not get to eat it. Jiang Yubai had almost forgotten the taste of meat.
Ji Huan smiled and looked at Jiang Yubai but noticed the little rabbit seemed down, as if she lacked energy.
Ji Huan shook the gray rabbit in her hand and laughed. “Why are you suddenly unhappy? Come on, let’s find a place to give this rabbit a good wash. Later, we’ll roast it in the cabin.”
Jiang Yubai’s eyes brightened, but she looked at Ji Huan uncertainly. “Sister, don’t we need to take it back?”
“Of course not. Just the two of us will eat it. Otherwise, if we take it back, who knows whose stomach our hard-earned rabbit will end up in? By the way, is there water nearby?” Ji Huan asked. There was a small river in the back mountain, but Ji Huan had only read about it in the book and was not sure of its location.
Jiang Yubai looked at Ji Huan with some confusion but did not ask further. Logically, Ji Huan should know the back mountain better than her. Why would she ask where the water was?
“Go down this way. There’s a spring at the end of that path,” Jiang Yubai pointed forward.
“好, let’s go wash the rabbit,” Ji Huan said, smiling at Jiang Yubai. She held the rabbit and walked lightly toward the direction Jiang Yubai indicated.
Jiang Yubai had not expected Ji Huan, who was usually so filial, to decide not to take the rabbit home. Hearing Ji Huan say this, she felt a faint happiness inside. However, since last night, Ji Huan had seemed different from before, which made Jiang Yubai feel uneasy.
Seeing Ji Huan walking far ahead, Jiang Yubai hurriedly caught up with her pace.
They walked for a while before reaching the stream. Fortunately, the water was not frozen. Ji Huan took the short knife and quickly skinned the rabbit clean. She wrapped the rabbit’s innards in dry grass, planning to place them in the traps later for possible extra catches.
Ji Huan washed the rabbit’s insides thoroughly until no bl00d remained. Then she nodded with satisfaction.
Jiang Yubai saw Ji Huan still had the knife to carry, so she willingly picked up the wrapped innards to help.
Ji Huan looked at the little white rabbit helping beside her with great satisfaction, her eyes curving slightly.
Back at the cabin, Jiang Yubai used a flint to start a fire. Ji Huan placed some of the rabbit’s innards in the traps, careful not to use too much to avoid attracting larger animals.
When Ji Huan returned, the fire in the cabin was already burning. Jiang Yubai looked up at Ji Huan and said, “Sister, the fire is ready.”
“Good, let’s warm up the rabbit,” Ji Huan said. She used some thin branches she had just cut to make a simple roasting rack, nailing long sticks into the soil on both sides of the stove. She surrounded them with small stones to secure the sticks.
She then skewered the rabbit on a long, thin branch and placed it on the rack to roast the meat.
Although TV shows made it seem like roasting meat cooked quickly, in reality, it took at least three hours to roast properly.
Ji Huan rotated the branch occasionally to heat the rabbit evenly. Soon, the rabbit began sizzling with oil. The cabin had few seasonings, only salt and some dried peppercorns.
Ji Huan stuffed some peppercorns into the rabbit’s belly to remove the gamey taste and sprinkled salt on the surface. Even with limited seasonings, the rabbit’s aroma wafted far. The fat on the rabbit melted, creating a unique fragrance in the air.
Ji Huan swallowed hard. She glanced at Jiang Yubai, who stared intently at the sizzling rabbit on the rack.
Ji Huan looked at Jiang Yubai beside her, her eyes curving slightly. “It’ll take a while. It has to be fully cooked before we eat.”
“Okay, I’m not in a hurry,” Jiang Yubai said, her ears slightly red as she glanced at Ji Huan. Her gaze returned to the sizzling rabbit.
“好, I’m the one in a hurry,” Ji Huan replied with a smile. She and Jiang Yubai each sat on a wooden stump, waiting for the rabbit to roast.
After half an hour, Ji Huan took the rabbit off the rack. She cut a piece from the belly, tasted it to confirm it was cooked, and then cut another piece for Jiang Yubai. “Try it. Is it good?”
Jiang Yubai swallowed, her ears red, and took the rabbit meat Ji Huan offered. She took a bite. Though it lacked extra seasoning, the fresh rabbit was delicious. Jiang Yubai’s eyes brightened, especially since she had not eaten enough at lunch.
Ji Huan reached to pull off a rabbit leg, blowing on it occasionally because the freshly cooked rabbit was too hot. After much effort, she tore off a large hind leg and handed it to Jiang Yubai.
Jiang Yubai had not expected Ji Huan to give her the leg. She hesitated, looked at Ji Huan carefully, and said, “Sister, you eat it. I’ll eat another part.”
The hind leg was surely the meatiest and best part. She worried eating it might upset Ji Huan, though her eyes sparkled as she stared at the leg.
“No need. There are two hind legs, one for each of us. Take it quickly. It’s hot,” Ji Huan said softly, pushing the leg closer.
Jiang Yubai confirmed Ji Huan sincerely wanted her to have it. She carefully took it, her ears red, and said, “Thank you, sister.”
Ji Huan laughed at the little white rabbit in front of her. She chuckled lightly and said, “No need to be so polite with me. Eat up.”
Jiang Yubai nodded and ate the rabbit leg. The skin was crispy, and the meat inside was tender and delicious. Jiang Yubai ate happily.
Ji Huan struggled to pull off the other hind leg, placed the remaining rabbit back on the rack to keep warm, and ate her leg.
Since she had eaten lunch and did not particularly love rabbit meat, one leg filled her up.
She looked at Jiang Yubai and saw her sitting obediently on the stump, watching her. Ji Huan realized Jiang Yubai ate quickly and suspected she never ate enough at home.
Ji Huan took the rabbit off the rack, broke off half a front leg for herself, and handed the rest to Jiang Yubai. “I’m full. Can you finish the rest?”
Jiang Yubai froze, looked at Ji Huan’s expression, and saw her smiling eyes. She carefully took the rabbit and asked quietly, “Are you really not eating more?”
“Yes, I’m really full. Eat the good parts, but don’t overstuff yourself,” Ji Huan said with some concern.
“Okay,” Jiang Yubai nodded and started eating the rabbit.
Ji Huan sat eating her rabbit meat slowly. She relaxed and watched Jiang Yubai, noticing she ate extremely fast. Jiang Yubai’s appetite seemed two to three times larger than her own.
So, at the Ji family, had Jiang Yubai never eaten enough?
