Transmigrated Into an Ancient Filial Piety Novel as a Scumbag Alpha (GL) - Chapter 13
Chapter 13
Wang Xiuxiu watched Ji Huan and Jiang Yubai enter their room. She quickly tugged at Ji Sen’s sleeve and said, “What’s wrong with Ji Huan? She seems like a different person.”
“Who knows what’s gotten into her? Now everyone has to work this month. We’ve already done our day. Tomorrow it’s the eldest’s turn. Just wait. In a few days, the eldest and third will fight with Ji Huan. We’ll just watch the drama,” Ji Sen said with a cold snort, heading into the kitchen.
Wang Xiuxiu saw that Ji Huan and Jiang Yubai didn’t go to soften things with their parents. She and Ji Sen had to serve food and bring it to the main hall.
Ji Mantun’s face was dark. Seeing only Ji Sen and Wang Xiuxiu bustling about, he frowned and asked, “Where’s everyone else? Are they all fasting now?”
Ji Sen saw Ji Mantun’s anger and replied quietly, “Big brother’s family and third brother went back to their rooms. As for second sister, she took some food from the kitchen and ate in her room.”
Ji Mantun slammed his chopsticks on the table. “Rebellious! They’re all rebellious! Ji Huan took food to eat in her room? Does she think her father is dead?”
Ji Sen’s eyes darted, and he quickly patted Ji Mantun’s back to calm him. “Father, don’t be angry. Second sister has always been filial. It must be Jiang Yubai scheming behind her back, maybe using cheap tricks to seduce her. Otherwise, with second sister’s nature, she’d never defy you two.”
Ji Mantun sighed heavily. “What an unfortunate family. We brought back such a jinx. She’s bad luck enough, and now she’s causing unrest in our home. When has our Ji family ever had such a big fight?”
Ji Mantun glared at Liu Fengmei, tapping the wooden table. “It’s all your fault, short-sighted, insisting Ji Huan marry Jiang Yubai for two taels of silver.”
“Dear, how can you say that? Didn’t you agree too? Besides, two taels is a lot for us farmers,” Liu Fengmei said, sitting angrily nearby.
Wang Xiuxiu saw her parents-in-law sitting coldly at the table, not eating. She didn’t dare touch her chopsticks and kept signaling Ji Sen with her eyes.
Ji Sen quickly urged, “Father, Mother, don’t be angry. Second sister is just momentarily confused. She still cares for our Ji family. She’ll be fine in a few days. Let’s eat first. The food’s getting cold.”
“Eat, eat, eat! All you know is eating. You’re not young anymore, yet you spend your days gambling with your shady friends. Last time, you owed money outside. Our Ji family’s reputation is nearly ruined by you, and you dare talk about your second sister?” Ji Mantun said, furious at everyone.
Ji Sen pursed his lips but didn’t dare argue. His father was right. He had been in debt recently, and his mother had secretly helped him pay it off.
Ji Mantun tapped his pipe heavily on the table. “Sigh, I’m not eating. None of you let me rest easy.”
Ji Mantun sighed heavily again, stood up, and went to his room.
Liu Fengmei glared at Ji Sen and Wang Xiuxiu, sighing. “Fine, don’t wait for others. Eat quickly.”
Meanwhile, in Ji Ming’s room, children’s cries soon rang out. “Ji Ming, are you even a Qianyuan? Ji Huan said those things about us, and you didn’t argue with her properly?”
“What could I do? Keep your voice down. Ji Huan spoke the truth. If the village finds out, we’ll be shamed for life,” Ji Ming said, suppressing his anger. He didn’t dare fight too hard with Ji Huan. To him, Ji Huan was just upset from being sick. In a few days, she’d obey their mother again and work like an ox for the family.
“I’m so angry! It’s been ages since I did chores. Now I have to wake up early tomorrow to slave for your family,” Li Yulan shouted at Ji Ming.
Ji Ming reached to pull Li Yulan, urging her to lower her voice. If their parents heard, they’d think poorly of them. “Keep it down. You just cook tomorrow. I’ll fetch water and chop firewood.”
“Nonsense! You expect me to fetch water?” Li Yulan said angrily.
Compared to the chaos elsewhere, Ji Huan happily brought the food to the wooden table and set out chopsticks for herself and Jiang Yubai. “Eat while it’s hot. I ate a lot of rabbit meat earlier, so one bun is enough for me. The other three are yours.”
Jiang Yubai was surprised Ji Huan knew her appetite. She pursed her lips, sneaked a glance at Ji Huan, and said quietly, “I can’t eat that much…”
Her voice grew softer, clearly lacking confidence in her words.
Ji Huan chuckled, looking at the little rabbit still denying it across from her. She said softly, “Okay, eat what you can. You don’t have to be so formal with me when we’re together.”
“Okay,” Jiang Yubai nodded. As if recalling something, her ears reddened. “Sister, thank you for helping me earlier.”
Ji Huan heard Jiang Yubai call her “sister” more naturally, her eyes sparkling with amusement. “No need to thank me. We’re family. It’s what I should do. Eat quickly. Food cools fast in winter.”
“Okay,” Jiang Yubai said, her eyes brightening as she took a bun and ate.
The dish was plain cabbage and potato stew, but Jiang Yubai ate happily, and even Ji Huan’s appetite improved.
When Ji Huan finished one bun, Jiang Yubai had already eaten her second. She glanced at Ji Huan, then at the remaining bun on the plate, and hesitated. “Sister, what about that last bun?”
“If you can’t eat it, leave it. Don’t stuff yourself,” Ji Huan said gently.
“But, but that’s too wasteful,” Jiang Yubai mumbled softly. She could still eat half, but since her sister, a Qianyuan, only ate one bun, would Ji Huan think less of her for eating so much?
Ji Huan laughed, watching the little white rabbit whose eyes kept drifting to the bun. She picked it up, broke it in half, and said, “Afraid of wasting it? Let’s split it.”
Jiang Yubai nodded, her lips curving slightly. She was always hungry, and it was rare to eat her fill. Seeing Ji Huan’s reaction, it seemed she didn’t mind.
Thinking this, Jiang Yubai ate even more happily. In the end, Ji Huan ate slower. When she finished, the little rabbit was watching her obediently.
Ji Huan smiled at Jiang Yubai, glanced around the room, and saw a wooden basin in the corner. She stood up and said, “Let’s clear the straw to the backyard. I’ll heat some water later so we can wash up before sleeping.”
“I’ll heat the water, sister,” Jiang Yubai said quickly, worried Ji Huan might think she was lazy.
Ji Huan smiled faintly, her eyes gentle as she looked at the little rabbit. “Together?”
Jiang Yubai nodded. When Ji Huan turned to clear the straw, Jiang Yubai secretly touched her warm ears.
She hoped Ji Huan would always treat her like this.
