- Chapter 14 - Eating Noodles
When Bai Nian appeared at the security office entrance with her large bags, the old gatekeeper already recognized her.
Wang Ye Jun drove over to pick her up. Seeing Bai Nian leaning against the window frame and chatting happily with the guard, she couldn’t help but honk the horn.
A row of lights shone directly in front of Bai Nian, and a familiar face appeared through the windshield. She said goodbye to the guard, dragged her suitcase to the trunk, and as she got into the car, her gaze darted to the back seat.
Guessing her thoughts, Wang Ye Jun turned the steering wheel: “It’s too late; Sister Chen can’t show her face.”
“Oh, okay.” She fastened her seatbelt, her precious camera hanging around her neck, looking around like Grandma Liu visiting the Grand View Garden.
It was only a few steps from the gate to Chen Qingying’s hotel. They drove back and forth just to avoid drawing attention. Bai Nian put on her pre-prepared mask and sunglasses and secretly got out of the car.
Chen Qingying was a famous actress, and her accommodation was far better than others’. Stepping into the rose gold revolving door, she swiped her card and rode up to the top floor. The red-carpeted corridor absorbed noise, feeling soft and comfortable underfoot.
The room numbers on both sides were far apart, indicating the spaciousness of the units inside. Wang Ye Jun stood by the elevator behind her, giving a few instructions. Bai Nian said goodbye to her, and the floor numbers began to ascend.
As she stood at the door and knocked on the room, her nerves were taut, and her palms, gripping the suitcase handle, were sweaty. The light directly above her head shone on her face, appearing somewhat “death-like” from the angle of the opening door.
Soon, the sound of slippers shuffling came from inside. The combination lock turned. Chen Qingying unlocked it, then returned to the sofa to read, leaving Bai Nian with her back.
So aloof.
Bai Nian poked half her head in, saying to no one in particular, “I’m coming in.”
The hotel’s layout was grand, with a 270-degree full lake view providing a wide vista. At night, distant lights twinkled like stars. A large, dark green Monstera plant sat beside the off-white fabric sofa, swaying gently with the air conditioning.
Chen Qingying was lounging on the sofa, her hand resting halfway down the page, one leg crossed over the other, soft flesh peeking through the gap, her toes hooked onto her slippers, looking completely relaxed.
This was a stark contrast to her own disheveled appearance from hurrying over.
Awkwardly placing her luggage in the only open bedroom, she looked towards the kitchen: “Ms. Chen, are you hungry?”
“Not very,” the other party said without even looking up, completely absorbed.
“Then have you showered? Should I run you a hot bath?” Bai Nian had clearly forgotten the other party’s wet hair from their video call earlier, asking another pointless question.
Facing Chen Qingying, her sympathetic emotions arose, and she began to worry about everything.
Closing the book, the Omega looked up, meeting Bai Nian’s gaze, who had poked half her head in, and smiled: “I’ve showered. Not really needed.”
Her lips were clearly curved into a smile, but Bai Nian always felt the other party found her noisy, just being polite and not saying much.
The next moment, Chen Qingying got up and walked to the room closest to the living room air conditioner. As she grasped the doorknob, she didn’t forget to turn around and instruct.
“Ms. Bai, I’m going into my room now. Call me if you need anything.”
Without waiting for a reply, the door closed mercilessly.
Rejected. She wanted to cry.
Bai Nian glumly went back to unpack her luggage. After traveling with it for so long, this suitcase looked more and more agreeable.
Before meeting Chen Qingying, she rarely overthought things. Yet, every time she encountered the other party, she had to chew over every word she said, then swallow it and speculate repeatedly.
Licking the dog till the very end, and ending up with nothing.
Muttering to herself for a long time, she hung her frequently worn clothes on the rack, turned on the air conditioner, and went into the bathroom to shower.
Having slept enough during the day, now lying in bed with the lights off, Bai Nian stared at the ceiling, her eyes wide and bright.
She didn’t know how much time had passed, but she covered her eyes with a pillow, groaning internally.
She just couldn’t fall asleep!
Thinking of this, she simply turned on the bedside reading light. A warm yellow glow instantly illuminated the corner, and visibility gradually decreased towards the farthest window.
Her feet fumbled for slippers under the bed. She opened the door, her eyes squinting at the sudden brightness after adjusting to the dark.
“Ms. Chen?” Seeing Chen Qingying standing in front of the refrigerator, Bai Nian exclaimed in surprise, then remembered the scene of being rejected just now, feeling awkward.
So, it wasn’t that she wasn’t hungry; she just didn’t want to eat the food Bai Nian made.
Suddenly, all the self-indulgent thoughts of the past few days welled up, making her wish she could find a crack in the floor to crawl into.
In the semi-open dining area, a waist-high railing obscured the Omega’s lower body. A purple silk camisole nightgown hung on her shoulders, her sharp shoulders elongating her neck.
She held a glass, half-filled with milk clinging to the sides, and slightly raised her arm towards the bathroom, as if in greeting.
“I couldn’t sleep tonight, so I came to drink some milk,” she explained calmly.
But that was cold milk.
Bai Nian grumbled internally, instinctively wanting to offer to warm it for her, but the words reached her tongue and were abruptly swallowed.
Seeing her in a daze, Chen Qingying took a sip of milk: “You seem to have something to say to me?”
“Nothing, I just came out to use the restroom.” If she stayed any longer, Bai Nian felt the atmosphere would become even more awkward. She rested a hand on the railing and pushed the door open to enter.
The frosted glass door reflected the half-open bedroom opposite, with winding vine patterns framing the door. She let out a long breath, quietly used the restroom, and opened the door to find Chen Qingying actually standing right outside.
Her heart was clutched, and Bai Nian’s breathing quickened: “Ms. Chen?”
Upon closer look, she noticed the Omega’s figure was exceptionally good. Her delicate skin showed almost no pores; she was slender and well-proportioned. Her hair ends brushed her collarbone, and her eyes curved like a crescent moon.
“Why are you afraid of me, yet still want to get close?” she said bluntly. “Ms. Bai, your attitude is truly strange.”
Bai Nian’s face flushed crimson at being called out. She stammered for a long time, unable to squeeze out a single word, wanting to sneak away, but the person was blocking the door.
She should be a gentle person, yet in some aspects, she displayed an unintentional aggressiveness.
“Since we’re married, we should share hardships. Isn’t it bad to be so distant?” she chuckled, her words seemingly comforting.
She only mentioned sharing hardships, saying nothing about sharing blessings.
“Get some rest early.”
Leaving behind a light sentence, the purple figure vanished from the corner of her eye, and in the quiet living room, the sound of a door locking abruptly echoed.
Only after confirming the person had left did Bai Nian’s rooted feet move a few steps. She quickly ran into the room and dove onto the bed, completely engulfing herself in the covers.
Chen Qingying was warning her just now, right? Right?
If she dared to do anything to harm her, she herself wouldn’t have it easy. Bai Nian pulled the covers tightly around herself, wanting to cry but unable to.
She just wanted to use the restroom, she had no ill intentions! No wonder the other party’s attitude changed; she was subtly warning her.
Bai Nian explained it a thousand times in her mind, but she wouldn’t dare say it in front of Chen Qingying. It was all the fault of the sinful original owner, who had traumatized such a good girl into this state!
All night, Bai Nian didn’t sleep well, so much so that when she woke up the next day, her clear eyes had lost their sparkle.
Thinking it was still early, Chen Qingying probably hadn’t woken up yet. She walked into the kitchen, yawning languidly.
The view outside the kitchen window backed onto the lake. Large, distinct architectural styles stood in rows, and the unfinished development zone lay dormant at the foot of the azure distant mountains.
On the other side, the blue and green intertwined lake had a few small, leaf-sized boats floating at the ferry crossing, like a green sun tinged by the golden sand on the perimeter. Bai Nian had seen this lake in some Xianxia dramas before.
Fresh air filled her lungs. She vigorously pulled open the refrigerator, put dried noodles into boiling water, and then added two eggs to the seasoned soup.
The slight hesitation from yesterday was thrown to the back of her mind, completely forgotten.
When Chen Qingying came out, steam wafted across the living room, carrying the aroma of plain noodles. Bai Nian opened the window for ventilation. Seeing the other person bustling about, she placed two bowls of noodles on the table.
“Ms. Chen, come and eat!” Bai Nian called out, shaking her T-shirt off her shoulder a couple of times, finally feeling less hot.
Cooking in a slightly warm kitchen was no different from being in a steamer.
Seeing Chen Qingying standing there motionless, she pushed the bowl of noodles towards her: “If you don’t eat it soon, it’ll get clumpy. Are you still filming this morning?”
Her tone was like a grandmother chasing after her grandchild at the village entrance to feed them.
Chen Qingying actually wanted to find an excuse to refuse, but she couldn’t resist the enthusiasm. She had no choice but to pull out a chair and take a pair of brand new chopsticks from the chopstick holder.
“I don’t have a habit of eating breakfast,” she politely refused, reminding Bai Nian not to bother next time.
“How can that be? People are iron, and rice is steel!” Bai Nian blew on a spoonful of soup to cool it, then took out a jar of chili paste from the refrigerator, which she had brought herself. “If you don’t eat properly, you’ll definitely faint from low bl00d sugar later.”
“You know my body very well.” Chen Qingying curved her lips, her smile not reaching her eyes.
The speaker had no intention, but the listener took it to heart. Bai Nian paused her movements, feigning a sudden realization: “It’s not a curse, I’m just concerned about you.”
Without responding, Chen Qingying watched her skilled movements as she scooped the chili paste: “What is that?”
“Douchi chili oil, it smells really good,” Bai Nian was about to scoop some for her, but suddenly realized the person in front of her was a celebrity, so she pulled her hand back. “You still have to work, so you shouldn’t eat anything too greasy in the morning.”
She didn’t know if Chen Qingying appreciated her good intentions. She picked up her chopsticks, delicately sniffing the noodles, a stark contrast to Bai Nian’s vigorous slurping.
The dining table, designed for elegance rather than practicality, was a small round white table. Bai Nian curled her legs, secretly glancing at the Omega.
She truly deserved to be recognized as a great beauty in the entertainment industry. Her seaweed-like hair was clipped back with a khaki shark clip, and a few stray strands brushed past her ears.
The pure white, form-fitting dress suited Chen Qingying well, softening her sharp and strong demeanor, making her appear more approachable.
She ate silently, not making a sound, as quiet as the “white moonlight” senior sister mentioned in many novels.
Lost in observation, Bai Nian stretched her legs, accidentally brushing the other person’s toes, and quickly pulled back.
This action caught the woman’s attention. She looked up at her.
“I’m sorry, I accidentally…” It was a small matter, but Bai Nian brought it up so seriously that it made her seem guilty.
Chen Qingying didn’t care: “Then was staring at me all this time also an accident?”
Bai Nian:!
“I wasn’t,” her eyes turned red with urgency. She stiffened her neck and stammered an explanation, “I was watching Ms. Chen eat noodles very gracefully, it looked very nice…”
“Shouldn’t one eat noodles gracefully?” Chen Qingying pulled out a tissue from nearby and wiped her mouth.
“Of course not! When you eat noodles, you should slurp them, that’s when they smell good!” Seeing that she had changed the subject, Bai Nian quickly followed up, even giving a demonstration.
Chen Qingying smiled, but said nothing.
In her eyes, it was a very ill-mannered behavior.
Bai Nian didn’t notice the fleeting look of mockery on her face, immersed in her own world. She picked up a chopstick full of noodles, blew away the steam: “Where I come from, slurping noodles is a compliment to the chef.”
The lifted noodles were almost level with her mouth, drizzled with red chili oil. However, they had been soaked in the broth for too long, and when gripped by the chopsticks, they instantly became soft and fell straight back into the bowl.
A large chunk of noodles dropped in, splashing oily water from the surface of the soup. Bai Nian hadn’t even reacted yet, but Chen Qingying opposite her trembled.
The Omega’s brows furrowed, and her previously half-closed eyes widened. On her collar, scattered spots of orange-red had already spread.
Bai Nian: …
Chen Qingying: …
