- Chapter 8 - Moving In
When the machine was running, she tied up the trash and placed it by the main gate.
Having lived alone for a long time, she was skilled at these household chores. She opened the refrigerator, looking for ingredients to make breakfast.
The double-door refrigerator was neatly filled with snacks and drinks. Fruits and vegetables were in the bottom crisper. She glanced at them and took out eggs and bacon.
Making breakfast for three wasn’t complicated. Bai Nian pan-fried the toast until golden on both sides, and when she put the eggs and bacon in, she squeezed a little salad dressing.
She wondered if Chen Qingying liked sweet things.
After finishing and plating the food according to her own taste, she carried it to the dining table. Just then, footsteps came from the stairs.
Thinking it was Chen Qingying, her heart fluttered, but she still poked out half her head and said without thinking, “Ms. Chen, come quickly and have breakfast.”
After she spoke, she saw who it was and froze.
Chen Zi, holding the handrail, wearing slippers, stared at her with a look of surprise.
At this moment, Bai Nian wished she could bite off her tongue, fearing that the other party would discover something amiss. Fortunately, Chen Zi didn’t pay much attention. She said in surprise, “Up so early? Xiao Bai, you’re so diligent.”
Washing her hands at the sink, she pulled out a chair: “Still so polite. Just call me Auntie, like Qingying does.”
It seemed the other party misunderstood, thinking Bai Nian was addressing her.
Bai Nian, who had successfully bluffed her way through, chuckled twice and pushed the plate towards her: “Auntie, quickly try my cooking.”
Chen Zi picked up a fork, cutting off a small corner: “Our breakfasts over there are pretty similar to this. I was thinking of having some noodles or wontons when I got back.”
“Then I’ll make them for Auntie next time,” Bai Nian said, walking to the door. “I’ll go wake up Qingying.”
As she spoke, Chen Qingying actually walked out of the bathroom across the hall. She was wiping her hands with a towel on the wall, and her gaze met Bai Nian’s across the living room, subtly raising an eyebrow.
When did she come down? She hadn’t heard a single sound.
“Qingying, come quickly and have breakfast.” The dining room wall was made of translucent glass. Chen Zi didn’t forget to praise Bai Nian, “Xiao Bai’s breakfast is delicious, come try it.”
Chen Qingying had changed from last night’s bathrobe to loungewear. Her lavender nightgown was loose, with ribbons tied at the shoulders, its dark color making her skin glow brightly.
“With Xiao Bai taking such good care of you, you should also get up early for breakfast. Drinking yogurt and eating salads all day long isn’t good.” As soon as she sat down, Bai Nian cleverly pushed the plate towards her, listening to Chen Zi’s earnest admonitions.
“That’s right, even if female celebrities need to maintain their figure, health comes first,” Bai Nian boldly added, thinking of the plot in the book.
The Omega’s long eyelashes trembled slightly, and her lips paused, still maintaining that docile look she had in front of elders.
Only Bai Nian felt her momentary displeasure, as if to say, “You dare to lecture me too.”
“That’s well said. No matter how busy you are, you must take care of your health.” Chen Zi, unaware of the undercurrents at the table, wholeheartedly agreed with Bai Nian’s words.
White salad dressing stained the silver fork. Chen Qingying spread it on the golden-brown toast. She looked up, her gentle eyes as bright and clear as awakening spring ripples: “Auntie is right.”
The meal was eaten distractedly. Chen Zi went upstairs to pack her belongings, then came back to bid farewell to the two at the door.
“I don’t know what fun things there are in S City. I found a hotel nearby, conveniently close to the scenic area, so I can go back and look around. You and Xiao Bai take care.”
“No need to see me off. I’ll come visit you again next time.” Chen Zi opened her parasol, and her black translucent sunglasses reflected the outline of her eyes.
“Walk safely, Auntie.” Bai Nian clasped her hands over her lower abdomen, like a hotel greeter, revealing her pearly white teeth when she smiled.
Not until the figure disappeared did Chen Qingying ascend the steps. Bai Nian followed, asking for permission: “Ms. Chen, then I’ll be leaving too?”
She followed closely. The other person walked fast, with no intention of waiting for her.
Receiving no answer, Bai Nian put her hand into her shirt pocket, feeling a sharp corner where the paper was folded: “Then… are we still divorcing?”
Her intention was to remind her, but in Chen Qingying’s ears, it might have sounded like reluctance.
The Omega pulled off the black hair tie from her wrist and casually tied up her wavy curly hair: “What do you think?”
After saying that, she went straight upstairs.
Looking at her back, Bai Nian was unsure. She repeatedly chewed on that sentence in her mind. Was this a divorce, or not?
While she was in a daze, the other party had already reached the second floor. She leaned against the rose gold railing, resting her cheek on one hand, looking down at Bai Nian.
“Tidy up your things,” she hesitated for a moment, “and move over.”
Bai Nian knew the other person didn’t like her. She looked up at the woman. She didn’t detect any reluctance in her lazy tone.
Her body softened under that lingering gaze. She unfolded the crumpled divorce agreement and, facing Chen Qingying, asked, “Then, Ms. Chen, what about this?”
When people act foolishly, even when they come to their senses and reflect, they can’t help but laugh.
The scrutinizing gaze was almost tangible, circling overhead. Chen Qingying drew out the end of her sentence, letting out a slow “Oh,” then a sudden light chuckle brushed past Bai Nian’s ear, causing a tingling itch.
“If you want it, you can keep it,” she lightly tapped her cheek with her knuckle. “I didn’t expect Auntie to like you so much. Keep it up.”
“If you pretend not to dislike me now, I might consider giving you some leeway when we divorce later.”
With that, she turned and went back to her room.
Bai Nian was left in turmoil by her words. What was terrifying wasn’t the other person’s harsh words, but always this inscrutable demeanor.
She was just a beautiful young woman in her twenties; please don’t do this!
In short, Chen Qingying’s words made it clear that if she didn’t behave well, she wouldn’t be let off the hook after the divorce.
Bai Nian took back the divorce agreement, distractedly Browse the items on it, then carefully put it back in her pocket.
This trip wasn’t without good news at all. At least she wouldn’t go to jail, and she saved on rent. The only drawback was that Chen Qingying’s villa area was too far from the city, making commuting inconvenient.
Bai Nian didn’t have much luggage to begin with; it was all borrowed from the original owner. Back at the guesthouse, she packed her belongings and dragged the noisy rolling suitcase downstairs.
On the way, she received a message from Yun Ning.
Yun Ning: [Sister Nian Nian, I’ve finished the first draft of yesterday’s report!]
Even through the screen, she could feel the other side’s excitement. Bai Nian double-checked her calendar, unsure.
It’s the weekend, right? Why is her colleague so competitive!
Bai Nian: [I was too busy yesterday, I haven’t started yet.]
Yun Ning: [It’s okay, hehe. Do you want to come out for dinner together tonight? You refused me yesterday, you can’t this time.]
Thinking about it, she couldn’t just avoid socializing to take care of Chen Qingying, right? Besides, apart from morning and evening, the other person was out most of the time.
Accepting the invitation, Bai Nian got out of the taxi with her suitcase. Standing in front of the villa area, her mood was completely different this time. Thinking about living with Chen Qingying from now on, she cheered herself on.
The main gate wasn’t closed, and the chain that had been hanging on it was gone. Chen Qingying was standing in the courtyard, watering the flowerbed.
Bai Nian knew nothing about flowers. After saying hello and being ignored, she had to retreat to the original guest bedroom to put away her luggage, then prepared to go downstairs to help.
When she came down, the person was already gone. She thought about sending a message to ask but felt it would be overstepping.
Even roommates don’t report their whereabouts constantly, let alone their current awkward situation.
Disappointed, she returned to the living room and noticed that cameras had been installed in the hallway and corners of the first floor at some unknown time.
No need to say who they were for.
She shouldn’t have expected any kindness from Chen Qingying. She pretended to let down her guard, but in reality, she was watched more closely than anyone.
Sigh, when will these days end?
The afternoon sun made one drowsy. Bai Nian organized the photos she took yesterday, then after a makeshift lunch, she curled up in a corner of the sofa and fell asleep.
When she woke up, it was exactly four o’clock. Remembering her appointment with Yun Ning, she closed her laptop, casually tidied up, and left.
The weekend saw an exceptionally large crowd. The wind swept through the leaves, stirring up waves of deep and shallow green. Stepping on the swaying tree shadows, she opened her phone’s navigation.
The dinner location was inside the commercial building. By the time Bai Nian found the place according to the store name, Yun Ning was already sitting by the window.
“Sister Nian Nian, over here.” She had clearly seen her and raised her hand, waving twice. Through the glass, she couldn’t see clearly, only make out the shape of her mouth.
Following the waiter to her seat, Yun Ning was washing the tableware for her. When she placed it in front of Bai Nian, there were still hot water droplets on it.
This must be a newly opened store. As she entered, Bai Nian saw flower baskets made of golden wheat ears on both sides, and uncleaned ribbons on the red carpet.
“I heard this place’s pickled fish and tofu are especially delicious. When my friend recommended it, my first thought was to bring Sister Nian Nian here for a meal.” Yun Ning smiled sweetly, two small dimples appearing at the corners of her mouth.
This kind of friendly familiarity, without overstepping boundaries, was very pleasant for Bai Nian. She thanked her, unable to help but praise, “Ning Ning, you’re really nice.”
One had to know that in this lonely world, NPC Bai Nian’s goals, besides completing the main quest—winning over Chen Qingying—were to simply live well.
Yun Ning was her first friend.
“Where? Sister Nian Nian is also very caring,” Yun Ning playfully stuck out her tongue and picked up the plum juice on the table to pour her a glass.
“Besides, I have a purpose for coming out this time,” she smiled mysteriously. “As my senior, you have to help me polish my draft well.”
“No problem.” Bai Nian took the water glass and readily agreed.
The atmosphere of this restaurant was good. Drinks were free and unlimited. A row of stemmed glasses hung upside down on the wine cabinet behind the cashier. A melodious tune floated in the air. Plus, there weren’t many people at this hour, making it very suitable for enjoyment.
While Bai Nian was surveying the environment, her peripheral vision noticed Yun Ning constantly checking the time.
“What’s wrong?” She thought the other person had an urgent matter to deal with.
The young girl looked around, showing a meaningful smile. She stood up and leaned forward, speaking in a voice just loud enough for both of them to hear.
“I also heard from a friend that a celebrity will be coming to the commercial building today.”
The sweet perfume, mixed with the freshness of summer and the warm air expelled when speaking in a whisper, didn’t trigger any particular thoughts in Bai Nian.
She focused intently on the other person’s words, and her sixth sense, as a woman, activated at a very inopportune moment.
“Guess who it is?” Yun Ning sat back down, building suspense.
“Who?”
Bai Nian’s throat was dry; she managed to squeeze out one word.
