- Chapter 2 - Shock
Under the influence of Ling Tingyu’s initiative and their highly compatible pheromones, Lu Xian found herself completely addicted. She marked the Omega several times, yet no matter what, she could not satisfy her craving.
The latter half of the night was pure madness.
As sunlight filtered through the curtains, a warm beam fell across the bed, highlighting delicate, pale shoulder blades that glistened with sweat. The Omega lay there, soft and sweet. One bite was never enough. Wrapped in her scent, Lu Xian only wanted more.
When she finally woke up, Lu Xian was stunned as memories of her unrestrained behavior came flooding back. How had she become like that?
Back in her original world, she was all about work. She had never had a girlfriend and never even entertained the idea. Yet the moment she transmigrated into this novel, she had changed. Worse still, she seemed to enjoy it. Lu Xian touched her lips, worried. She had no experience with this. What if she had made Ling Tingyu uncomfortable?
No. Now was not the time to dwell on that.
So far, everything had followed the plot exactly as it was written in the book. Lu Xian grew anxious. She suddenly remembered the contract hidden in the study. Rushing to check, she found it already torn to pieces.
That meant the original host had already planned to betray Ling Tingyu. Inside the folder were forged documents filled with slander. If Ling Tingyu discovered them, Lu Xian would definitely be dragged into the wilderness and left to die, just like in the story.
To protect herself, Lu Xian destroyed the documents completely, shredding them into powder. She also formatted the USB drive before tossing it in the trash. As for the torn contract, she tucked the pieces back onto the bookshelf, planning to piece it together later and deal with it.
Once that was done, she finally let out a breath of relief.
As she stepped out of the study, she saw Ling Tingyu coming out of the bedroom. Her brows were slightly furrowed, her expression a little strained and maybe even awkward.
After what had happened the night before, Lu Xian was filled with guilt. Even if Ling Tingyu told her to pack up and leave right now, she would accept it without protest.
She braced herself, but instead of rejection, Ling Tingyu walked up with a slight blush and gently patted her cheek.
“You didn’t eat for nothing,” she said softly. “I’m satisfied.”
Her touch lingered on Lu Xian’s skin.
Lu Xian stood frozen for a few seconds before her mind exploded like a firework display.
Lu Xian blinked in disbelief.
Did Ling Tingyu just compliment her?
She was not getting kicked out?
There was still hope.
Lu Xian touched her cheek, smiling like an idiot.
“What are you smiling about?” Ling Tingyu asked.
“…Nothing.” Ling Tingyu leaned closer and sniffed gently at Lu Xian’s neck. “Your pheromones… is that crème de cacao?”
The Omega’s breath brushed against her skin, making Lu Xian shiver slightly. She nodded. “Yes.”
“It’s getting even more intoxicating,” Ling Tingyu murmured.
The unexpected praise made Lu Xian’s heart skip a beat. She quickly returned the compliment. “Yours smells amazing too.”
Before marriage, they had never been near each other during a rut or heat cycle. Ling Tingyu had never really noticed Lu Xian’s scent until now.
With a calm smile, Ling Tingyu took a step back. “Go freshen up. I’ll have breakfast ready soon.”
“Okay.” Lu Xian practically floated into the bathroom, then paused and turned back.
“I’ll work hard. I promise I won’t eat for free again.”
After she disappeared behind the door, Ling Tingyu’s smile slowly faded.
If Lu Xian could continue avoiding the path that hurt her, she would pretend not to see what was hidden in the study. Last night’s intimacy would be the last chance she gave her. That was what Ling Tingyu told herself.
Inside the bathroom, Lu Xian tied her hair up and splashed cool water onto her face. She reached for the toothpaste, but when she looked up into the mirror, her hand froze.
Her reflection showed lips red like rose petals, teeth bright as pearls, and soft, flawless features. Her dark eyes were still moist, with a touch of innocence lingering in their corners. She reached up and gently pinched her cheek. Her skin was soft, bouncy, and smooth.
Definitely more delicate than when she had been running around on set under the blazing sun.
“I really was born to be a delicate little Alpha,” Lu Xian said with awe.
She imagined herself standing alone in the rain, droplets streaming from her hair and dripping from her chin, her pale skin glowing, eyes red from crying.
No wonder Ling Tingyu had fallen for the original host. That pitiful look would melt anyone’s heart.
After drying her face, Lu Xian carefully applied her skincare. Looking good was important, especially now.
She paused.
Her hands needed to look good too.
By the time she finished her thorough skincare routine, twenty minutes had passed.
Ling Tingyu’s voice came from outside, calm but tinged with concern. “Lu Xian, aren’t you done yet?”
“Almost, almost.” Lu Xian quickly tightened all the lids on her bottles and jars and stepped out, leaving behind a soft, pleasant scent.
Ling Tingyu turned to look and paused, eyes lingering a few seconds longer than usual.
“Is there something on my face?” Lu Xian asked, a little embarrassed.
“There is.” Ling Tingyu reached out and wiped her cheek with a finger. She chuckled. “You put on too much cream.”
“Too much?” Lu Xian looked at the faint, milky-white residue on Ling Tingyu’s fingertip. It had not absorbed completely and wiped off too easily. It really did seem like a bit much.
Ling Tingyu gently guided Lu Xian back into the bathroom by her shoulders. “Let me show you. Applying too much cream can clog your pores and cause skin problems.”
Lu Xian, who had always believed that using more meant better results, nodded guiltily. “I’ll just wash it off then.”
“Let me help.” Ling Tingyu took a cleansing cloth, dampened it, and carefully wiped away the excess product.
Standing half a head taller, Lu Xian looked down at Ling Tingyu’s face, now so close to her own.
Her peach-blossom eyes were filled with warmth. Long lashes curled delicately over her cheeks, and her skin glowed faintly pink, whether from sleep or natural radiance. She moved slowly and carefully, as if afraid of hurting Lu Xian.
The scent of white tea drifted gently from the Omega’s body. It was so soothing that Lu Xian had to steady her breathing. “I can do it myself,” she murmured.
“All clean now.” Ling Tingyu set aside the cloth, poured some toner into her palms, warmed it between her hands, then lightly patted it onto Lu Xian’s skin.
Lastly, she applied a thin layer of lotion, cupping Lu Xian’s face with both hands as she gently smoothed it in.
Lu Xian’s cheeks grew warm. “I really could have done this myself.”
“It’s the same if I help. You’re not used to these products anyway.” Ling Tingyu’s tone was calm, as though caring for Lu Xian was second nature. “Let’s go eat.”
When they entered the living room, they realized there was someone else already there.
The woman seated at the table had sharp features and a crisp, professional air. Her presence radiated competence and reliability. Lu Xian quickly guessed that this must be Ling Tingyu’s manager, Lu Li—the only person who knew about their secret marriage.
Lu Li sipped from her coffee and gave them a playful glance. “If you two keep acting all lovey-dovey, lunch is going to get cold.”
“Lu Li, don’t talk nonsense.” Ling Tingyu had once spoken about Lu Xian to Lu Li quite often, but the more she did, the more disapproval she received in return. Eventually, she stopped bringing her up. Ironically, after that, Lu Li started asking about her nearly every day.
Lu Xian glanced at Lu Li with admiration. Despite her young age, Lu Li was an incredibly capable agent. She was eloquent, resourceful, sharp in negotiations, and fiercely protective of her artists. None of the people under her ever suffered any losses. She was practically an all-in-one powerhouse.
Well, almost all-in-one.
There was one thing Lu Li could not manage—winning back her Omega girlfriend.
In the novel, Lu Li and her Omega partner also ended in heartbreak.
Lu Xian raised an eyebrow slightly and sat beside Ling Tingyu. Lu Li gave her a look of thinly veiled disdain.
Lu Xian knew that Lu Li disliked freeloaders. With a polite smile, she asked, “Sister Lu Li, may I eat now?”
The original host had always acted timid around Lu Li. Since this was their first meeting in person, Lu Xian stayed in character. She needed to act like the pitiful and naive Alpha for the time being. Besides, Lu Li was not truly unkind. Lu Xian was willing to put on the act for now.
Lu Li closed her eyes and said nothing.
The room fell silent for a moment.
Ling Tingyu spoke up gently. “Lu Li, why are you glaring at her?”
“I wasn’t glaring,” Lu Li muttered under her breath.
Ling Tingyu ignored the response and picked up a steamed bun, placing it in Lu Xian’s bowl. “Go ahead and eat. Don’t mind her.”
Lu Li remained quiet, lips pursed.
Lu Xian bit into the fragrant beef bun, chewing slowly. In her heart, she thought, freeloading really was hard work.
After lunch, Ling Tingyu changed into a pale pink dress that hugged her slender waist and highlighted the delicate lines of her collarbone. She slipped on a light jacket that softened her silhouette, then put on sunglasses and a mask to conceal her features.
Her voice came muffled from behind the mask. “Lu Xian, we need to leave a little early. There’s a scene to reshoot this afternoon.”
Lu Xian frowned with concern. “But you’re still in heat. Are you sure it’s okay for you to work?”
“It’s fine. I’ve used suppressants.” Ling Tingyu suddenly leaned in, whispering close to Lu Xian’s ear. “Besides, the mark you gave me last night worked really well. I’ll be alright.”
Lu Xian’s ears turned bright red. Being teased by an Omega until she blushed was more than she could handle.
Through her sunglasses, Ling Tingyu noticed the flush climbing up Lu Xian’s neck and cheeks. She thought to herself that it would be nice if Lu Xian could stay this innocent forever.
She reached out and gently pinched Lu Xian’s cheek. “I’ll get going now.”
The cool touch of her fingertips snapped Lu Xian out of her daze. She blinked rapidly and asked, “Will you come back later?”
The moment the question left her mouth, she remembered the three lines the original host used to say over and over again:
Will you come back? When will you be back? Will you still like me when you return?
Lu Xian had always cringed reading those lines. She never thought she would actually say one herself.
Ling Tingyu waited for a moment, clearly expecting more, but Lu Xian stayed quiet. She simply replied, “Around five in the afternoon. I’ll message you when I’m done.”
After Ling Tingyu left, Lu Xian stood by the door, frowning slightly. She felt like a fluffy little animal that Ling Tingyu could not resist petting. Lost in thought, she barely noticed when Lu Li turned to Ling Tingyu and asked, “Do you really like that naive Alpha?”
Ling Tingyu did not answer right away. Her tone was guarded. “She’s just a helpless little kid who can’t take care of herself. I’m only looking after her.”
Lu Li looked incredulous. “Was it necessary to take care of her all the way into marriage?” She followed closely behind, muttering to herself, “Unbelievable. Now I have to bring meals for both of you. I’m practically raising two people on my own.”
Their voices gradually faded as they walked farther away.
Because the novel Palm Sweetheart had been so cruel to Omegas, Lu Xian had never dared to read any of Ling Tingyu’s internal monologues. But she understood clearly that what Ling Tingyu felt for the original protagonist had never been love. It was only a habit, a sense of duty mixed with soft-hearted guilt. She had agreed to the marriage not out of romance, but out of responsibility.
The original protagonist had been a helpless younger partner, a spoiled little white Alpha who only knew how to act cute. She was a wolf in sheep’s clothing who had not yet revealed her fangs.
But Lu Xian was not that person.
She was something else entirely.
