- Chapter 6 - Interactions
This was Lu Xian’s room, permeated with the sweet scent of cocoa liqueur pheromones .
Ling Tingyu’s heat period hadn’t yet passed, and the smooth, fragrant aroma brushed against the back of her neck, inevitably sending shivers down her spine. Her mind flashed back to the night of the marking, Lu Xian, flustered and awkward, slowly nuzzling around her ears.
How could an Alpha who didn’t even know where an Omega’s scent gland was dare to bring another Omega into the home she shared with her newlywed wife?
Ling Tingyu gradually loosened her grip, replacing it with the gentle caress of her fingertips against the fair skin of Lu Xian’s wrist.
“It tickles.” Lu Xian’s wrist was sensitive, and the feather-light touch made her want to pull away.
Ling Tingyu tightened her hold, preventing escape, and asked patiently, “Explain this to me, who is Wen Tian?”
If Lu Xian remembered correctly, she had already introduced Wen Tian before entering the room. Yet now, this Omega was relentlessly pinning her down, demanding answers. What did she want to know? Or was there some misunderstanding?
Amid the rich aroma of cocoa liqueur, the fresh, pure scent of white tea emerged. Lu Xian had tasted the concentrated essence of that fragrance before and knew Ling Tingyu’s pheromones weren’t as mild as they seemed because that night, the Omega had been intoxicatingly sweet in the throes of passion.
The delicate scent lingered, and Lu Xian gently pushed Ling Tingyu away. “Your pheromones are unstable. Let’s keep some distance for now.”
An Omega’s strength was no match for an Alpha’s. Earlier, Lu Xian hadn’t resisted out of compliance, but now, upon catching her scent, she actively avoided it.
Ling Tingyu leaned against the wall, her clenched hand still unrelenting.
Lu Xian opened the window to air out the room and clarified the misunderstanding. “Wen Tian is like a younger sister to me, we grew up together in the orphanage. She can’t speak and is often harassed by a creepy neighbor. When I went to pick her up, I ran into that pervert again.”
Ling Tingyu lifted her gaze. “Are you both alright?”
Lu Xian shook her head. “We’re fine. I beat him up.”
She didn’t care if it shattered her meek, innocent Alpha persona, she told the truth about what happened when she picked up Wen Tian, hoping Ling Tingyu wouldn’t misunderstand and would allow Wen Tian to stay temporarily.
“You got into a fight?” Ling Tingyu’s first reaction was to check Lu Xian for injuries. “Are you hurt anywhere?”
“I’m fine, but that creep took a few kicks from me. He’s not in good shape.” Lu Xian grinned proudly. “I’m still an Alpha, after all. I won’t lose out.”
Ling Tingyu fell silent, her gaze flickering over Lu Xian’s face. The Alpha’s dark, glistening eyes curved slightly when she smiled bright and open, nothing like the timid coward from before.
The Lu Xian before her now seemed to stand in the sunlight clear, transparent, pure, and untainted.
Ling Tingyu stared at her for a few extra seconds, lost in thought. How could someone change so much in such a short time?
Feeling the Omega’s gaze, Lu Xian lowered her eyes, her long, thick lashes casting delicate shadows. “Would it be alright if Wen Tian stayed here for a while?”
Ling Tingyu’s eyes swept over her rosy lips before she snapped back to reality. “It really is dangerous for a girl to live alone. There’s a spare guest room, she can stay for now.”
“Okay, good.” Before leaving the room, Lu Xian asked, “If Wen Tian asks about our relationship, what should I say?”
Without hesitation, Ling Tingyu replied, “You can tell her.”
Lu Xian smiled. “She’s actually your fan. If she finds out about us, she’ll definitely keep it a secret, don’t worry.”
Ling Tingyu absentmindedly hummed in response. Lu Xian seemed even more worried than her about their secret marriage being exposed, despite previously pestering to go public.
When Lu Xian came out, Wen Tian was still standing nervously in the corner guarding her luggage, carefully observing the movements in the room.
“There’s no need to be nervous. Ling Tingyu is very kind, she agreed to let you stay.”
Upon hearing this, Wen Tian visibly brightened, a smile forming on her lips before she signed seriously: [What’s your relationship with Sister Tingyu? Why have you never mentioned her before?]
They seemed like complete strangers, Wen Tian couldn’t wrap her head around it no matter how hard she tried.
Lu Xian whispered to her, “Ling Tingyu and I are legally married wives, though we’re keeping it secret for now.”
[Really?!] Wen Tian’s mouth fell open wide enough to fit an egg. If she could speak, she’d be screaming in excitement right now.
“Really.” Lu Xian pressed a slender finger to her lips. “But you can’t tell anyone.”
Even though Wen Tian was still stunned, she nodded emphatically: [I’ll definitely keep it secret! Sister Tingyu’s career is more important!]
So it all came back to her beloved Sister Tingyu. Lu Xian smiled faintly. “Yes.”
Seeing Ling Tingyu emerge from the room, Wen Tian bent her thumb twice: [Thank you.]
Lu Xian translated, “She’s saying thank you.”
Mid-translation, Lu Xian remembered the book mentioned Ling Tingyu had learned sign language from a tutor for a role.
“I know,” Ling Tingyu said. “I understand some sign language.”
As Ling Tingyu’s devoted fan, Wen Tian immediately recalled: [I remember Sister Tingyu learned sign language for a role!]
Ling Tingyu nodded and opened the first guest room. “This room is cleaned weekly it’s spotless. You can move in right away.”
The guest room had its own bathroom and a small balcony. For Wen Tian, who’d never had her own space in her family’s cramped one-bedroom apartment, this felt like having her own little world.
Wheeling her luggage inside, Wen Tian glanced toward the kitchen: [Are you hungry? I can cook for you, I can make anything!]
“No need. Settle in first, we’ll call you when dinner’s ready.”
While reading the novel, Lu Xian had ached for Ling Tingyu, but Wen Tian had equally tugged at her heartstrings. She hoped this lifetime would let Wen Tian grow up safe and happy.
Wen Tian was overwhelmed, practically bubbling with happiness.
In the kitchen, leftover shrimp from earlier sat unprepared. Tying on an apron, Lu Xian stood at the spacious but bare countertop, the kitchen barely had any utensils.
Ling Tingyu followed her in, watching as Lu Xian deftly deveined the shrimp with her pale, slender fingers, the tendons on her hands faintly visible strangely mesmerizing.
But it was Lu Xian’s practiced technique that truly shocked Ling Tingyu. “Since when could you do this?”
Setting the cleaned shrimp aside, Lu Xian hesitated before admitting, “I’ve actually been secretly learning to cook recently.”
Ling Tingyu studied Lu Xian’s profile. The Alpha paused, then met her gaze with a shy smile. “Try it later? If it’s no good, I’ll improve.”
Ling Tingyu’s brows furrowed almost imperceptibly. “Why?”
Lu Xian blinked, confused.
“Why learn this?” Ling Tingyu pressed.
“Hmm?” Lu Xian was focused on chopping vegetables and spoke straightforwardly: “I can take care of myself now. You’re so busy with work, you definitely don’t have time to worry about my affairs. And I don’t want to cling to you for everything.”
As expected, Ling Tingyu’s lips curled slightly: “You want independence, is that it?”
Lu Xian nodded.
Ling Tingyu: “So all that fragility at the beginning was just an act?”
Lu Xian froze that had indeed been the original owner’s intention.
“At first, I acted that way to get your attention.”
Lu Xian nearly bit her tongue saying it. Since she was here now, she had to take responsibility as an Alpha, no more pretending to be weak and pitiful, no more deceiving Ling Tingyu.
But to Ling Tingyu’s ears, the words carried a different meaning: “So now that you’re not pretending, you don’t need my attention anymore?”
Her attitude had done a complete 180 since before the marriage. Could it be that all Alphas change after getting married?
“Of course not.” Lu Xian didn’t know how to explain, she couldn’t exactly say the body had changed owners.
Suddenly, the oil in the pan sizzled, and Lu Xian turned her attention back to cooking.
Ling Tingyu leaned against the counter, arms crossed, watching Lu Xian work. From chopping to stir-frying to plating, everything flowed smoothly, no sign of clumsiness anywhere.
“Done, time to eat.” Lu Xian moved to untie her apron, but Ling Tingyu pressed her hand down: “Let me help.”
This was a closed kitchen, separated by frosted glass doors, invisible from the outside.
“Okay.” Lu Xian started to turn around, but Ling Tingyu had already stepped forward, arms slipping around her waist to reach behind.
Lu Xian didn’t dare move, staring rigidly ahead, arms stiffly hovering in midair as Ling Tingyu’s smooth forehead occasionally brushed against her chin.
Lu Xian suppressed her breathing: “Is this position really necessary to untie the apron?”
“What’s wrong, don’t you like it?” Ling Tingyu maintained the embrace, close but not actually touching.
The Omega wore thin silk pajamas, and the occasional brush against her chest left Lu Xian’s ears burning red as she stiffly replied, “I like it…”
No sooner had the words left her mouth than a tingle shot through her waist, Ling Tingyu had untied the apron and stuffed it into her hands, leisurely commenting, “Nice texture.”
Had… had she just been teased by an Omega?
Right before stepping back, Ling Tingyu had deliberately run a hand along her waist, the electric tingle traveling up her ribs and making her heart tremble, her neck flushing next.
Even though it was normal physical contact between spouses, Lu Xian swallowed her surprise, Ling Tingyu wasn’t supposed to be this kind of Omega.
During dinner, Wen Tian glanced up and noticed Lu Xian’s flushed ears and neck. Whenever Ling Tingyu spoke to her, Lu Xian would only nod or murmur in response.
Had they had a fight earlier? The atmosphere felt strangely tense.
Wen Tian waved a hand in front of Lu Xian’s face. When Lu Xian looked over, she set down her chopsticks and signed: [Sister Tingyu just asked if you’re going out to work tomorrow.]
“I heard.” Lu Xian grabbed the glass of ice water beside her and drained it, cooling the restless heat inside. “I’ll be out tomorrow, might come back late.”
Lu Xian glanced at Ling Tingyu: “Will you be busy tomorrow?”
Ling Tingyu’s gaze lingered on her earlobe before shifting to meet her eyes, as if trying to see right through her. Lu Xian felt an illusion of being laid bare.
After a pause, Ling Tingyu finally replied: “We’re nearing the wrap-up, so it’s not too busy. I only have two scenes tomorrow. Are you going to the film studio too?”
“Yeah, I got two extra roles,” Lu Xian said happily, her dark eyes shining. “One of them even has three lines.”
Ling Tingyu, blessed with natural talent and luck, had skyrocketed to fame overnight since her debut, never having to work as an extra or play minor roles. She couldn’t fully grasp the struggles of lower-tier actors, but right now, Lu Xian seemed genuinely thrilled, unbothered by the size of her part.
But was Lu Xian really this happy over just three lines? Happier than having endless spending money by her side?
Did Lu Xian really want to break into the entertainment industry this badly? Was she that eager to get away from her?
Maybe she really should cut off Lu Xian’s allowance that might make her remember her worth.
Ling Tingyu raised a brow. “Do you want to go together tomorrow?”
“No!” Lu Xian refused almost instantly. “If we show up together, people might get suspicious. Let’s go separately.”
Ling Tingyu lowered her gaze, chewing on a tender shrimp, savoring the lingering flavor. Though her appetite was satisfied, her heart felt hollow.
She set down her chopsticks. “I’m full. You two take your time.”
Wen Tian, perceptive as ever, sensed the low pressure around Tingyu-jie. Lu Xian’s eager rejection seemed to have upset her.
Worried, Wen Tian signed to Lu Xian: [Tingyu-jie barely ate anything. She seems unhappy.]
“Really?” Lu Xian hadn’t noticed anything off. She knew Ling Tingyu was careful about maintaining her figure and usually didn’t eat much at night.
Wen Tian: [Go check on her.]
Lu Xian glanced toward Ling Tingyu’s room, then got up to heat a glass of milk in the kitchen. She knocked and waited for permission before entering.
Ling Tingyu was sprawled on the bed reading a script, the hem of her silk nightgown riding up to her knees, revealing slender, pale calves.
Keeping her gaze steady, Lu Xian handed over the milk, seeing no sign of Ling Tingyu’s earlier displeasure. “You didn’t eat much earlier. Have some milk.”
Ling Tingyu tilted her chin up, the deep V of her nightgown hinting at hidden allure. Lu Xian fixed her eyes on the Omega’s sharp, upturned eyes and cleared her throat. “Milk won’t make you gain weight, and it helps with sleep.”
The Omega shifted to sit cross-legged, the hem of her gown riding higher, faintly revealing the pale skin of her thighs.
Lu Xian tightened her grip on the glass, only relaxing when Ling Tingyu stretched out a fair hand to take it.
Ling Tingyu stared straight at her. “Lu Xian, is this you caring about me?”
Lu Xian gave a faint hum in response.
Ling Tingyu lowered her gaze to the pure white milk in the glass, hesitating for a few seconds before lifting it to her lips.
Lu Xian waited as she drank, watching her eyes, then her lips. Ling Tingyu sipped the milk delicately, her lashes lowered, her cherry-like lips parting slightly as the white liquid disappeared bit by bit. Through the glass, the pink tip of her tongue flickered faintly.
Perhaps there was too much milk after finishing about two-thirds, Ling Tingyu pulled the glass away, licking her lips. Her tongue curled to catch the last drop at the corner of her mouth, leaving behind a faint sheen.
Lu Xian’s gaze darkened.
“I can’t finish it,” Ling Tingyu said, handing the glass back.
“Get some rest early. Goodnight.” Lu Xian took the glass and hurried out of the bedroom.
The cool air outside the room finally made her feel alive again. Even though Ling Tingyu’s room had air conditioning, she’d felt inexplicably hot.
