Bai Shuzhou’s gaze followed the six eyes as they turned.
Against the light, the girl’s dagger pierced the insect’s carapace with swift precision. Without hesitation, she twisted the blade vigorously, stirring the air with the metallic stench of earth.
Her cloak shifted, shielding her as the colossal creature collapsed to its knees with a heavy thud. It didn’t even have time to scream before being struck down in a single, fatal blow.
Skin pressed tightly against skin, her racing heartbeat pounded like a drum against Bai Shuzhou’s chest, followed by the tremor in the girl’s arm.
After Bai Shuzhou spoke, Zhu Yu quickly looked up, like a rabbit peeking out of its burrow, catching sight of the corpse’s gruesome state.
The insect’s crimson eyes remained wide and staring, but had grown cloudy, like cheap glass beads on the verge of rolling out. They fixed their gaze on Zhu Yu, unyielding even in death.
Zhu Yu froze, a strange unease creeping into her heart. Moments ago, the creature had worn a bizarre smile, but now its eyes seemed like inorganic cameras, as if some unseen entity were observing through them.
But it was clearly dead. Once dead, there was nothing left.
After catching her breath, Zhu Yu turned to look at the wound on Bai Shuzhou’s leg, reassuring her, “It’s okay now. I got the Inhibitor. There’s a first-aid kit on the first floor. Let’s go down.”
This place had once been an abandoned outpost, which Zhu Yu’s original self had converted into a secret base. Zhu Yu carried Bai Shuzhou to the bed in the surveillance room, then ran back upstairs alone to lock the doors and windows, confirming that the insect was completely dead.
She clasped her hands together, forcing down the nausea and revulsion. The last time she had bowed so devoutly was when praying to the God of Wealth.
“Don’t blame me. You attacked first. We acted in self-defense. Every wrong has its source, and you brought this upon yourself.”
“Rest in peace.”
With a swift strike, the insect finally stopped staring at her. Its cloudy eyes drooped shut, and Zhu Yu exhaled deeply.
By the time Zhu Yu rushed back with the medical kit, the woman had vanished from the military cot.
Startled, Zhu Yu immediately followed the lingering scent, finally spotting a corner of the woman’s skirt trapped beneath a cabinet door around the corner.
The woman had hidden in haste, leaving a few scattered drops of bl00d on the floor. Zhu Yu froze, the crisp click of her boots on the floor ceasing abruptly, like a malevolent mockery before disaster struck. The skirt trembled.
Found you.
Zhu Yu’s heart jolted.
This is it. What kind of horror movie is this turning into?
She couldn’t imagine how the proud princess had dragged herself, inch by inch, into the cramped, dark cabinet. The thin wooden door offered no barrier to her soft sobs.
She doesn’t trust me.
In the silent gap between them, Zhu Yu could feel the woman’s gaze, just as she could sense her own eyes fixed on the cabinet.
The weightless gaze pressed down, collapsing in the cramped corner, becoming heavier than a mountain.
With an ice cube in her mouth, Zhu Yu struggled to enunciate clearly, “Your Highness, I won’t hurt you.”
She slowly pulled open the cabinet door, the uneven light catching on the woman’s damp hair. If tears could turn into pearls, they would have already spilled across the floor.
Zhu Yu softened her tone. “See? The Inhibitor and medical kit are right here. You’ll feel better soon.”
“Let me carry you out first, okay? It’s too dark in there to give you the injection.”
Zhu Yu leaned down and gently lifted the curled-up Bai Shuzhou into her arms.
Bai Shuzhou’s silver hair was soaked with sweat, clinging damply to her collarbones.
Her skin was strikingly pale, the cinnabar mole on her wrist standing out sharply. She lifted her gaze, her light blue eyes reflecting a gemstone-like brilliance—cold, sharp, and piercing.
Behind her, the simple military cot and surveillance screen seemed to transform into a lush garden. Crimson roses and emerald vines entwined around her, while the warm yellow light caressed her profile, giving her skin the texture of an oil painting.
Zhu Yu sucked on an ice cube, her body temperature still rising. She wore a black mask over her mouth and nose, desperately trying to block the Omega’s allure, but her heart pounded even harder.
She lowered her head, afraid to meet Bai Shuzhou’s gaze.
“I’ll give you the Inhibitor first, then tend to your wounds.”
Bai Shuzhou continued to scrutinize Zhu Yu.
Her sleeves were rolled high, revealing a slender yet strong arm. She had already removed her outer coat and cloak, leaving only a close-fitting white shirt.
Even the specially treated fabric couldn’t withstand the venom’s close-range spray. In her peripheral vision, Zhu Yu could see that the joints of her arm were a bloody mess.
Zhu Yu’s aura seemed to have changed.
It was clearer than before, carrying a faint, minty coolness that, amidst the dizzying, cloying fragrance, inexplicably brought a sense of calm. Her breathing unconsciously slowed.
As the distance closed, the silver needle slowly approached the gland.
The image of the girl’s courageous leap flashed through Zhu Yu’s mind: the long wind swirling around her as she descended from the sky. Though she had closed her eyes in fear at the last moment, she had stubbornly clung to Zhu Yu.
