- Chapter 11 - Standing on Her Side
This time, Dr. Xia’s expression had finally softened a little while treating Chi Lengzhao’s wound.
“It’s just a surface tear. Nothing serious. I’ve already cleaned and re-dressed it.”
“Thank you, Dr. Xia.”
“Chi Lengzhao, at least you have a shred of decency—you actually protected your wife.”
Chi Lengzhao stared intently at her reflection in her phone’s camera, lifting a finger toward her head. “Could you wrap it a little higher? It looks better that way.”
Dr. Xia snorted coldly but adjusted the bandage for her.
“I should thank you,” Chi Lengzhao said sincerely. “Before I arrived, you stood up for my wife. I really appreciate that.”
There was a flicker of discomfort on Xia Lian’s face. “I just happened to step out of the elevator at the right time. That’s all.”
“I’ll treat you to a meal sometime to show my thanks.”
Dr. Xia’s face turned cold again. “No need. Just treat your wife well. That’s enough.”
Chi Lengzhao admired her newly wrapped bandage in the mirror, this time feeling satisfied.
“I will. She’s my wife—I’ll always treat her well.”
A slender, fair hand hovered hesitantly in front of the hospital room door. After a couple of seconds, it knocked softly.
The sound of a mouse scrolling and keyboard tapping came from inside.
“Come in,” Chi Lengzhao said without looking up from her laptop. She sat on the bed, fully focused. “Housekeeper Zhou, can you bring me a bottle of water? I don’t feel like getting up.”
The person who walked in hadn’t expected to be assigned a task the moment they entered. Glancing around and seeing no one else, she walked toward the coffee table where a few bottles of water were placed. The figure on the bed remained deeply absorbed in her screen, not sparing her a single glance.
The newcomer’s delicate brows twitched slightly. She picked up a bottle, walked over, and handed it to the woman on the bed.
“Thanks.” Chi Lengzhao took it, unscrewed the cap—and immediately caught a faint whiff of sweet bay laurel.
There was only one person who carried that scent.
She looked up sharply and smiled. “It’s you? What brings you here?”
It was Shen Zhixi.
“It’s nothing,” Shen Zhixi replied. As soon as Chi Lengzhao looked at her, she instinctively took two steps back, putting some safe distance between them before speaking again. “I just came to check on you.”
After that terrifying encounter earlier, Shen Zhixi had lost any interest in walking in the garden. Hua Zi had helped her back to her room, muttering as she did:
“That woman’s unbelievable! And she still calls herself Miss Chi’s friend?”
“Thank goodness Miss Chi showed up! She gave her exactly what she deserved!”
“She said she was going to sue Miss Chi? Honestly, we should be the ones pressing harassment charges and sending her to jail!”
Hua Zi had gone on and on, but seeing that her lady didn’t respond and was calmly scrolling on her phone, she eventually fell silent and kept herself busy elsewhere.
Later, when she came back in, she saw her lady still curled up on the sofa, scrolling in the exact same position. Unable to hold it in any longer, Hua Zi asked, “Miss, don’t you want to go see Miss Chi? I heard her head injury reopened, and there was a lot of bl00d. You’re the young madam of the Chi family now—wouldn’t it seem cold if you completely ignore her?”
Hua Zi found it strange. Although her lady had always been a bit distant by nature, before the wedding, she hadn’t been this indifferent. Back then, she had picked out birthday gifts for Miss Chi herself and even baked her bread and cakes from scratch.
But after they got married, especially over the past few days, her attitude toward Miss Chi had noticeably chilled. Sometimes, Hua Zi even sensed outright dislike—like her lady saw Miss Chi as an enemy rather than a spouse.
For instance, while her lady had never once visited Miss Chi in her own hospital room, it was Miss Chi who came to see her daily, sending food and drinks through the housekeeper.
Of course, none of this was mentioned to Madam.
Hua Zi had heard a little about Miss Shen’s condition. Madam already seemed constantly worried. Why add more to her burden?
Hearing Hua Zi speak, Shen Zhixi’s heart gave a small jolt. Her fingers froze on her phone screen.
If even Hua Zi had noticed… did that mean other people could see it too?
Was she being too obvious? Was her coldness toward Chi Lengzhao too hard to miss?
Thinking about her one-year agreement with Chi Lengzhao, Shen Zhixi realized that, on the surface, her current attitude was indeed a bit much.
She stood up from the sofa, trying to appear at least somewhat surprised. “Chi Lengzhao’s wound reopened? I should check on her.”
Hua Zi looked delighted. “Yes! Miss, go quickly!”
“Please, sit down—make yourself comfortable.”
Chi Lengzhao immediately closed her laptop and tossed it aside. She sat up straight, gesturing toward the chair beside her bed with a warm smile.
Shen Zhixi wasn’t quite used to seeing her so formally polite, like she was hosting a guest in her own home.
She pulled out the chair and sat down. “I heard your wound reopened. Are you alright?”
No matter what, it had happened during the fight with Shi Xin—a fight that was because of her.
Aside from maintaining the illusion of a happy marriage for their one-year agreement, there was another reason she had come. This time, Chi Lengzhao had chosen to stand by her side, without hesitation.
In her past life, Shi Xin had spread countless rumors—implying Shen Zhixi was being overly familiar with other Alphas. It didn’t matter who: a delivery guy, the building manager, even her cousin or an old director she’d worked with. The moment these rumors reached Chi Lengzhao, they twisted into something vile.
She’d accused Shen Zhixi of flirting, of complaining about their marriage, of trying to seduce other men. And then, she would explode—slapping her, calling her a shameless, promiscuous woman.
Chi Lengzhao had never believed her. Only Shi Xin.
“I’m fine,” Chi Lengzhao said. “It’s just a minor wound. Dr. Xia already rewrapped it.” She pointed at the bandage on her head. “What do you think? Looks better than the last one, right?”
Shen Zhixi paused, glancing at the bandage—and inevitably, at the face she knew all too well.
That face, with its striking features and sharp elegance, was both cold and captivating. The kind that made people fall with just one look.
Now, that face was smiling at her. A relaxed, sincere, even cheerful smile.
But in her last life, she had seen that face twisted most often in anger, contempt, or a chillingly wicked smirk.
This version of Chi Lengzhao felt… unfamiliar.
She looked away, her voice cool and reserved. “Yes. It looks better than before.”
Chi Lengzhao beamed at the praise. “If it weren’t for this big bandage drawing attention, I’d have checked out already. Hospitals are so boring. Don’t you think it’s stuffy here?”
But Shen Zhixi didn’t want to keep chatting. She stood up. “As long as you’re alright. Make sure you get enough rest.”
“Oh, okay. You too. Let me know if you need anything.”
Shen Zhixi paused at the door. “Thank you… for what you did today.”
“Thank me? We’re wives. Of course I’d protect you.”
It had been a young nurse who ran to Chi Lengzhao, saying, “Miss Chi, your wife’s being harassed by someone near the elevator!”
Chi Lengzhao’s expression changed immediately.
By the time she arrived, she heard the woman shouting about who was “qualified,” and claiming even their hospital director would “grovel before her.”
Chi Lengzhao hated those arrogant bullies who thought money gave them power—especially ones who dared lay a hand on her wife. Her fist had landed before the woman finished her sentence.
“You hit Shi Xin today. Now you can’t be friends with her anymore. Do you regret that?”
“What’s there to regret?” Chi Lengzhao said calmly. “She called herself my friend but tried to harass you. She even blocked the security camera. That says everything. She’s not a good person—and I don’t want friends like that.”
Shen Zhixi looked at her in surprise, silent.
This Chi Lengzhao seemed… more rational than the one she remembered.
Meeting Shen Zhixi’s probing gaze, Chi Lengzhao smiled sincerely. “I’m a good person. I don’t keep trash around me.”
Whether it was sarcasm or disbelief, Shen Zhixi gave a soft scoff. “A good person?” she echoed with a cold chuckle, then turned and walked out.
Chi Lengzhao watched her retreating figure, rubbing her chin thoughtfully.
Looks like my wife still holds quite the grudge against me.
I wonder if a year is really enough… to win her over and rewrite my fate.
