- Chapter 12 - Daddy, we're going Home
Chi Lengzhao continued studying documents—she was determined to fully understand the current financial situations of both the Shen and Chi families.
She had promised Shen Zhixi she would help the Shen family, but she knew better than to count on Chi Jintang.
Aside from showing up on the first day, her so-called father hadn’t even made a phone call in the days since.
After an entire day of research, Chi Lengzhao rubbed her tired eyes. The notebook beside her was filled with scribbles—symbols, formulas, Chinese and English notes all jumbled together.
She had sent her driver, Xiao Song, out to buy the notebook. When he heard she needed it for taking work notes, both he and Housekeeper Zhou were stunned.
In all these years, it was the first time Housekeeper Zhou had ever seen the young lady take anything seriously.
Before, her nights were always booked—either heading to the bar or bringing someone back from one. She never woke before noon.
Could marriage really change someone this much?
“Miss, you’re still injured. You should rest,” Housekeeper Zhou advised gently.
Chi Lengzhao nodded, went to shower, and was just about to turn off the lights when her phone buzzed.
A voice message from Xue Pantao.
“Zhao, Hanzai and I came to visit you and Sanjin. Isn’t the hospital open 24/7? Why won’t the inpatient wing let us in?”
Chi Lengzhao glanced at the time—11:50 PM.
She was both annoyed and amused. She recorded a reply: “You’re visiting a hospital patient at this hour? Do you not care if I sleep or not? Do you even know what time it is?”
Xue Pantao quickly responded: “It’s not even midnight yet! Still early!”
Chi Lengzhao: “Early? What do you think this is, a bar?!”
A long pause, then another message: “Sorry, Zhao. Hanzai and I have never visited someone in the hospital before. We didn’t know. Rookie mistake.”
Rolling her eyes at Pantao’s profile picture, Chi Lengzhao sighed. How do these two even survive with their IQ?
“Go home. Don’t disturb the peace—and don’t disturb my sleep.”
Xue Pantao: “Alright, alright, we’re heading to a bar instead. We’ll come see you both tomorrow.”
You Neihan added: “We’ll be there by tomorrow afternoon.”
But the next morning, Chi Lengzhao was jolted awake by loud shouting from the hallway.
“Chi Lengzhao! Where the hell are you? Get your ass out here!”
Dr. Xia Lian’s voice followed, stern and firm. “What are you doing? This is a hospital! Keep your voice down—you’re disturbing the patients.”
“She had no problem throwing punches yesterday, huh? What now? Hiding like a coward?”
Chi Lengzhao’s eyes snapped open.
Shi Xin sent people after me already?
But then, the tone outside changed—abruptly.
“Sorry! Sorry! Just blowing off steam, that’s all. Apologies to everyone!”
“We’ll leave right away. Won’t cause any more trouble.”
A little while later, Housekeeper Zhou brought in breakfast.
“What happened out there? Was someone here to start trouble?” Chi Lengzhao asked.
“Miss Shi did bring a few people,” Zhou replied calmly. “But then someone from the room across the hall stepped out, said just one thing to the leader—and they all bolted.”
That caught Chi Lengzhao off guard. Seems the inpatient wing has more hidden talents than I expected.
When Dr. Xia came in for rounds, Chi Lengzhao brought up discharge. “Dr. Xia, how is my wife doing? If it’s possible, I’d like us both to be discharged today.”
Dr. Xia raised an eyebrow. “Afraid Shi Xin might send more people?”
Chi Lengzhao smiled. “Not afraid—I just don’t want to cause trouble for the hospital. Besides, my wife will be more comfortable at home.”
Truthfully, the hospital was decent, but Chi Lengzhao had had enough of it.
Dr. Xia nodded. “But your head bandage isn’t scheduled to come off until tomorrow.”
“It’s fine. I’ll have Housekeeper Zhou remove it for me.”
“Alright. I’ll give him the instructions later,” Dr. Xia agreed. She knew very well that home would be much more comfortable for Shen Zhixi than any hospital room.
“Thank you, Dr. Xia.”
When Chi Lengzhao went to find Shen Zhixi, she was still eating breakfast. Hua Zi was saying something that made Shen Zhixi smile.
That elegant curve of her lips, the gentle arch at the corners of her eyes, the relaxed expression on her brows—Shen Zhixi, already breathtaking with her delicate features and porcelain skin, looked like a goddess in that morning light.
So beautiful, so ethereal, it made Chi Lengzhao’s heart skip a beat.
But as soon as Shen Zhixi saw her, that smile vanished. Her usual cold, distant demeanor returned in an instant.
Hua Zi stood up. “Miss Chi, you’re here.”
Chi Lengzhao smiled and nodded before turning to Shen Zhixi. “Did you sleep well last night? Did the noise in the hallway this morning bother you?”
Shen Zhixi’s expression was blank. “No. I’m fine.”
Hua Zi, standing nearby, let out a silent sigh. Miss is still acting like this… same as always. She glanced at her mistress, then quietly stepped out of the room.
As soon as the door closed, Shen Zhixi’s voice turned colder. “Why are you here?”
“To check on you, of course, Xixi.” Chi Lengzhao casually twisted open a water bottle and handed it to her. “You took care of me yesterday, so let me return the favor today.”
When Shen Zhixi didn’t reach for the bottle, Chi Lengzhao added gently, “We agreed to play the part of a loving couple for a year, remember? This attitude of yours doesn’t quite fit the role.”
“There’s no one else here. No need to put on an act.” Still, Shen Zhixi eventually took the bottle from her hand.
“Are you feeling better?” Chi Lengzhao asked. “If you are, I was thinking we could get discharged today—go home.”
The moment she said “go home,” Shen Zhixi’s face stiffened.
That villa. In her previous life, she had been trapped there for four long years. No contact with the outside world. Forbidden to speak with neighbors. It was within those walls that Chi Lengzhao had forcibly marked her, taunted her daily, slapped her whenever she was displeased.
The memory made Shen Zhixi’s fingers tighten unconsciously. The water in the bottle sloshed out, soaking the front of her nightgown.
“What’s wrong?” Chi Lengzhao quickly pulled a few tissues from the box and handed them over.
But Shen Zhixi suddenly grew agitated, swatting her hand away. “Don’t touch me! Get away!”
In the scuffle, half the bottle’s water splashed onto Chi Lengzhao’s sleeve.
“Okay, okay—I’m stepping back.” Chi Lengzhao backed off, hands raised.
Clearly, Shen Zhixi has deep-rooted fear and resentment toward the old me.
And it’s not hard to understand. After all, the original Chi Lengzhao was a complete monster—trying to drug and forcibly mark her own wife on their wedding night.
Once Shen Zhixi calmed down, the red in her face faded, and the cold pallor returned. For a brief moment, Chi Lengzhao had the urge to tell her the truth—that she wasn’t that Chi Lengzhao anymore.
To say, I’m not her. I came from another world. You don’t have to live in her shadow any longer.
But if she said that, she’d probably be diagnosed with schizophrenia and locked up in a psych ward.
So instead, she said sincerely, “Shen Zhixi, I won’t force you to do anything. I meant it when I said you’re free to live however you wish. I swear—I will never touch you.”
“When we return home, you’ll be the lady of the house. You’ll have complete freedom.”
“But,” she added gently, “so people think we’re a normal, loving couple, we’ll share the same bedroom. After all, newlyweds sleeping in separate rooms would raise eyebrows with both our parents.”
Before Shen Zhixi could respond, Chi Lengzhao continued, “You’ll take the bed, I’ll sleep on the sofa. And the rest of the time, I’ll stay in the study. We won’t disturb each other.”
Originally, Chi Lengzhao had planned to alternate sofa duty—she’d take it this month, Shen Zhixi the next. Seemed fair.
But after seeing her panic, she backed down.
Shen Zhixi let out a cold laugh. “You’ve really thought this through. The only question is—can your promises be trusted?”
Chi Lengzhao gave a faint smile, her eyes sharp and gleaming with meaning. “My entire fate is in your hands. What do you have to fear?”
Shen Zhixi turned her head to look at her, gaze probing—as if trying to understand the deeper meaning behind her words.
Fate?
Chi Lengzhao said her fate was in her hands.
What did that mean?
Suddenly, Shen Zhixi thought of the sapphire necklace. It must really mean something to her.
And at last, she gave a tiny nod.
Chi Lengzhao felt an overwhelming wave of relief. She cheered silently in her heart—
“Let’s go home, heroine.”
