- Chapter 17 - “Your Wife Treats You Pretty Well”
Chi Lengzhao called Xiao Song and headed out to shop for clothes.
Meanwhile, Shen Zhixi received a call from her mother.
“You and Xiaozhao are out of the hospital?”
“Yeah, we’re both fine now. We left together.”
Mother Shen gently reminded her, “Don’t act spoiled like you do at home. Try to get along with Xiaozhao.”
Shen Zhixi ran her fingers through her hair, trying not to sound dismissive.
“I know, Mom.”
“You two haven’t officially visited her parents yet, have you? Find some time and go see your in-laws soon.”
“I will. I’ll talk to her—see what she thinks.”
Around noon, Chi Lengzhao sent her a message:
[Zhixi, I won’t be home for lunch today. Sorry for leaving you to eat alone.]
Shen Zhixi stared at the word “sorry” for a while. No matter how she looked at it, it felt off.
This Chi Lengzhao was acting way too well-behaved—almost too good to be true. It left her feeling uneasy.
In their past life, it wasn’t uncommon for Chi Lengzhao to stay out all night, not coming home at all.
Let alone sending a heads-up, even when Shen Zhixi asked her afterward, the response would either be a glare of annoyance or a slap across the face.
“Mind your damn business!”
Absentmindedly, Shen Zhixi touched the side of her face. She could almost still feel the sting that had once burned there.
It took her a while before she finally replied:
[Got it. Take care of what you need to do.]
Soon, another message came in:
[What do you like to eat? I’ll bring something back for you this afternoon.]
Shen Zhixi laughed coldly to herself. Here we go again.
This was the same routine she used before the wedding—playing the gentle, thoughtful partner.
She replied quickly:
[Thanks, but no need.]
Outside, the sky was bright, autumn air crisp and fragrant with osmanthus blossoms.
Shen Zhixi sat on a plush, elegant European-style sofa in the lounge. The sunlight streamed in through the window, falling softly over her knees. Her eyes were lowered, and her long lashes cast delicate shadows across her cheeks.
Old memories surged up once again.
Back when Chi Lengzhao was pursuing her, she once flew across the world just to have dinner with her during a magazine shoot.
When Shen Zhixi saw her arrive at the shoot holding a huge bouquet of roses, pretending not to be surprised was impossible.
That evening, they had dinner to soft music. Chi Lengzhao listened patiently while she talked about her work on set, never once showing any disapproval.
Later, they strolled along the beach. The wind was cool, and Chi Lengzhao quietly draped her coat over Shen Zhixi’s shoulders—without crossing any lines.
Back then, Shen Zhixi had truly believed Chi Lengzhao wasn’t like the rumors described. Not a spoiled flirt, not a reckless womanizer.
When the two families arranged their engagement, Shen Zhixi had carefully asked her,
“After the wedding… could we take things slow? Don’t pressure me. I just need a bit of time.”
She had always been someone who couldn’t fake intimacy—if there was no emotional connection, she didn’t want to cross that line.
Naively, she thought that since she didn’t dislike Chi Lengzhao, maybe over time, she’d fall in love with her.
She remembered Chi Lengzhao had paused for a moment, then smiled and said,
“Sure. I won’t force you.”
But after the wedding, when Chi Lengzhao ignored her resistance and forcibly marked her…
When she lashed out, forbade her from doing magazine shoots or acting in films…
When she exploded in anger, shouting:
“Do you even understand your identity now? You’re my woman!”
“Filming? You think I don’t see through you? You just want to cozy up to some actor and flirt on set, don’t you?!”
“You’re nothing but a shameless, attention-seeking woman! You’re already a rich wife, and you’re still not satisfied?!”
“I won’t allow it! Shen Zhixi, don’t even think about leaving me—ever!”
Those disgusting, hateful words shot out of Chi Lengzhao’s mouth like bullets. Her eyes were bl00d-red, wild like a devil.
That was when Shen Zhixi truly saw her for who she was.
Everything she did while chasing her—it was all an act. A perfect performance to seem kind, caring, capable. To become the person Shen Zhixi would fall in love with.
How foolish she had been. Blind enough to fall straight into the devil’s trap.
Shen Zhixi felt a chill run through her. Her chest tightened, and she could hardly breathe.
Since Chi Lengzhao wasn’t home, Shen Zhixi ate lunch alone. The dishes were beautifully presented and light—nothing greasy or overly sweet.
Housekeeper Zhou said gently,
“Young Madam, Miss Chi instructed us to prepare dishes to your liking. If anything isn’t to your taste, just let us know.”
Shen Zhixi glanced over the table—there were no heavy, fried dishes. Mostly seasonal vegetables.
“This is good.”
Housekeeper Zhou then switched on the curved smart TV in the dining room.
“Would you like to watch something while you eat? Miss Chi told us not to let you eat in silence.”
Shen Zhixi: “…”
Hua Zi suggested excitedly,
“Miss, let’s watch that wives’ reality show—Sweet Go! It’s really popular right now!”
Shen Zhixi hadn’t seen it herself, but she remembered Shao Qiuqiu had mentioned it once.
“Okay, let’s watch that.”
Because she was watching while eating, the meal lasted over an hour. Hua Zi got totally into the show, peeling pomelos for her while chattering excitedly.
On screen, an Alpha was gently feeding her Omega ice cream. The Omega blushed, her tongue softly licking the spoon as their eyes met full of affection.
Hua Zi and Fangfang quietly giggled, their heads down, trying not to laugh too loudly.
But Shen Zhixi felt nothing.
In the entertainment industry, couples often had to act sweet for the cameras to boost ratings. What looked like love on screen might just be a job. Off camera, some of these “wives” could barely stand each other.
Still, everyone else seemed to enjoy the show. The mood in the room was light and cheerful.
After lunch, Shen Zhixi took a short nap and slept for about half an hour.
When she woke, Hua Zi greeted her with a smile,
“Miss, you’re awake. Just in time—Mrs. Zou from next door came by to visit.”
“Mrs. Zou?”
“She lives a few houses down, just two doors over.”
Shen Zhixi changed into a more casual outfit and went downstairs to receive the guest.
Mrs. Zou looked to be around thirty-six or thirty-seven, elegant and well-mannered. Her husband was often away on business and only came home for a couple of days each month. Most of the time, she was at home with their little girl—a sweet, well-behaved child.
After chatting for a while, Mrs. Zou asked,
“Mrs. Chi, you’re newlyweds, aren’t you?”
“Yes, we just got married a few days ago.”
“That night, when your wife showed up at my door with her head bleeding, she really gave me a fright. Luckily, my husband was home, or I wouldn’t have dared open the door.”
Shen Zhixi froze for a second. Chi Lengzhao went to ask for an inhibitor that night?
She quickly masked her shock and replied with just the right touch of apology,
“I’m really sorry for disturbing you that night.”
Mrs. Zou smiled like someone who’d been through it all before.
“No worries—we’re neighbors, and emergencies happen.”
“She was clearly in a rush that night. She asked if we had any Omega inhibitors. Thankfully, I had some on hand, so I went to get them for her.”
“She was very polite, thanking us repeatedly. I saw she had a towel wrapped around her head—completely soaked with bl00d. Her whole face was covered in it. I asked if she needed help stopping the bleeding, but she said she’d already called an ambulance. Then she ran back out right away—I figured she was in a hurry to get the inhibitor to you.”
Mrs. Zou sipped her tea and smiled gently.
“Your wife really does care about you. She was bleeding that badly and still thought of you first. I stopped by the next day, and that young girl you have—Fangfang, I think?—told me you two were in the hospital. Are you doing better now? Has your wife’s head wound healed?”
Shen Zhixi nodded, “Thank you for asking, Mrs. Zou. We’re both doing fine now. She had her bandages removed today, and the wound has healed well.”
“That’s good to hear. You know, we’ve been neighbors for half a year now, and this is actually the first time I’ve come over.”
As they spoke, Chi Lengzhao returned, carrying a luxury jewelry gift box in one hand and a beautifully packaged cake box in the other.
Mrs. Zou stood up to say goodbye,
“Your wife is back, so I won’t stay and disturb you two. We’ll chat more next time.”
Shen Zhixi walked her to the door, just as Chi Lengzhao approached from outside.
Mrs. Zou greeted her,
“Miss Chi, do you still remember me?”
Chi Lengzhao took a moment to recognize her—it was the neighbor lady.
“Of course. Thank you again for helping us that night. Are you leaving already? I bought some cake—why don’t you stay and have some?”
Mrs. Zou smiled,
“No need to trouble you two lovebirds. I have to go pick up my daughter from school.”
“Alright then. Come by and visit anytime, Mrs. Zou.”
After she left, Housekeeper Zhou, Fangfang, and Hua Zi helped carry the clothes Chi Lengzhao had bought from the car into the bedroom.
Chi Lengzhao handed the jewelry box to Shen Zhixi with great excitement.
“Zhixi, this is for you—earrings.”
But Shen Zhixi didn’t take it. Instead, she asked,
“What made you suddenly want to give me earrings?”
“I just wanted to thank you for lending me clothes. I happened to pass by CT’s window display, and the earrings the mannequin was wearing really made me think of you—so I bought them.”
Seeing Shen Zhixi remain indifferent, she turned and called out,
“Hua Zi!”
Hua Zi popped her head out from the hallway,
“Yes, Miss Chi?”
“I need a favor.”
Hua Zi quickly came downstairs with a smile.
“What is it, Miss Chi?”
Chi Lengzhao lifted the gift box,
“These are for your Miss Shen. She won’t take them, so you’d better keep them safe for her.”
Hua Zi looked to Shen Zhixi, unsure.
“What are you looking at her for?” Chi Lengzhao said lightly. “I’m not asking her for anything—I’m giving her a gift. Go on, take it.”
Seeing that Shen Zhixi didn’t object, Hua Zi smiled and took the box upstairs.
“I also bought cake. Want to have some afternoon tea together?”
Shen Zhixi watched her cheerfully open the cake box, her expression pure and bright.
She realized she understood Chi Lengzhao less and less.
“This one’s not too sweet, and the sponge is nice and soft. Since you’re worried about gaining weight, here’s a small slice for you—this bigger one’s mine,” Chi Lengzhao said as she cut the cake, grinning. “And these three medium slices can go to Housekeeper Zhou and the others.”
She handed the small piece to Shen Zhixi. When she looked up, she met a pair of clear, soft, and eager eyes.
Shen Zhixi didn’t turn her away. She accepted the cake and began eating slowly.
The flavor was rich and smooth, sweet but not overwhelming. Shen Zhixi, who normally avoided sweets, unexpectedly found herself enjoying it—before she realized it, she’d eaten the whole slice.
Chi Lengzhao called out,
“Hua Zi, Fangfang, Housekeeper Zhou—come down for cake!”
Hua Zi was the first to dash out.
“Coming!”
Fangfang and Housekeeper Zhou followed behind.
Chi Lengzhao teased,
“Hurry up! If you don’t come now, I’ll eat it all myself!”
Hua Zi called back,
“Then eat slower and wait for us, Miss Chi!”
Shen Zhixi quietly watched Chi Lengzhao laugh and joke with them, her smile bright and full of warmth. She wasn’t throwing her weight around, and there wasn’t a trace of her past temper.
Holding her teacup, Shen Zhixi inhaled the aroma as steam curled above it. Her eyes never once left Chi Lengzhao.
Her doubts only grew deeper. Since her own rebirth, why had Chi Lengzhao changed so much in this life?
Could it be… something had happened to her too?
