- Chapter 19 - I Almost Fell for Your Trick Again
Dawn was breaking when Shen Zhixi finally fell asleep. By the time she woke up, it was already nine o’clock.
She glanced toward the sofa. As expected, the person was gone. The blanket had been folded and placed in the cabinet, and the sofa had been tidied up neatly.
The once-crumpled pillow had been put back beside her own.
As Shen Zhixi stepped out, she ran right into Hua Zi.
“Miss, you’re up. I’ll go let Housekeeper Zhou know,” Hua Zi said.
Shen Zhixi asked, “Where is she?”
“Miss Chi woke up at six and has already finished her workout. She’s in the study now. She said she wanted to wait for you to have breakfast together.”
“She’s waiting to eat with me?”
“Yes,” Hua Zi said with a smile. “Miss, look at how much Miss Chi cares about you. She insisted on waiting to eat with you.”
Shen Zhixi didn’t reply directly. Instead, she asked, “She’s still in the study?”
Hua Zi nodded. “Fangfang and Housekeeper Zhou both said that Miss Chi has become much more calm since getting married. She used to never be able to sit still for even fifteen minutes.”
A flicker passed through Shen Zhixi’s eyes. “You all go ahead and prepare. I’ll go get her.”
Hua Zi responded cheerfully and went downstairs with a smile.
The study door was slightly ajar. Chi Lengzhao was sitting behind the desk, focused on the computer screen. She was jotting down notes in a notebook as she worked.
Her brows were lightly furrowed, and her expression was more focused than ever.
At that moment, she didn’t look like a spoiled rich girl at all. Instead, she looked like a professional executive who had been navigating the business world for years.
Shen Zhixi knocked on the door.
“Come in.”
The calm voice carried a subtle authority, the kind that comes from someone used to holding power.
Shen Zhixi added another observation to her impression of Chi Lengzhao. She looked just like a sharp, capable CEO.
Chi Lengzhao was visibly surprised to see her. She closed the notebook, looked up, and smiled. “Morning.”
Shen Zhixi blushed slightly. At nine, it was hardly still morning.
“Let’s have breakfast. What were you looking at?” Shen Zhixi asked casually as she walked over and glanced at the computer screen.
Chi Lengzhao had been researching Meixi. If she wanted to help Meixi, she had to understand it first. In the book, however, the Chi father and daughter pretended to help Meixi while shamelessly taking it over. Worried that Shen Zhixi might misunderstand, Chi Lengzhao quickly moved the mouse and closed the browser.
As a result, the desktop displayed a large wallpaper. It was a promotional still of Shen Zhixi in her role as Rong Yin.
Mountains in the background looked like a painting. Rong Yin was dressed in flowing white robes, her sleeves fluttering, her hair gently swaying, graceful like a celestial being.
Shen Zhixi hadn’t expected to see her own drama photo on Chi Lengzhao’s computer. She was even more surprised that she had set it as her wallpaper. Her face flushed again.
“You watch dramas?”
Chi Lengzhao paused for a moment, then realized she was referring to The Sound of the World. She relaxed immediately. “Yes. I just finished it a few days ago. It was really good. Heartwarming, emotional, and funny. The main characters were smart, and I binge-watched the whole thing.”
She couldn’t help adding, “Zhixi, your performance as Rong Yin was beautiful. You looked like a real immortal. No wonder Anshi fell for you. Anyone who saw you would. If I were Anshi, I wouldn’t let you go either.”
The room suddenly fell silent. An awkward air flowed between them.
As soon as she finished speaking, Chi Lengzhao realized she had gone too far. She cursed herself in her head. Stupid. Think before you speak.
Shen Zhixi looked her up and down slowly, as if she were seeing her for the first time.
Chi Lengzhao felt uncomfortable under her gaze. Her smile began to freeze.
Why is she looking at me like that? Could she have figured something out?
“You like Rong Yin?”
“Yes. I like her character,” Chi Lengzhao replied quickly. Then she added, trying to flatter her, “Mostly because you played her. You did an amazing job.”
Shen Zhixi paused, her face reddening slightly again.
Chi Lengzhao had never acknowledged her career in the entertainment industry. She had never once praised her acting. She had never even watched The Sound of the World and used to forbid anyone in the house from mentioning it.
Shen Zhixi stared at her and thought, could it really be true that people speak kindly before they die?
“You should get proper rest and eat regularly. That’s the only way your health can improve.”
Chi Lengzhao was speechless.
Why does it sound like Zhixi thinks I’m already writing a will?
“Alright, let’s go eat.” Completely unaware that she had been categorized as a special care case, Chi Lengzhao stood up, smoothed her hair, and walked out with a cheerful smile. “I’m actually a little hungry. Zhixi, are you? Did you sleep well last night?”
At the dining table, Shen Zhixi secretly glanced at Chi Lengzhao, who sat across from her.
Congee, fried eggs, soup dumplings, fried dough sticks. She ate everything with a healthy appetite.
She didn’t look like someone with a terminal illness.
“Why aren’t you eating? Is it not to your taste? Tell me what you like. I’ll have Housekeeper Zhou make it.”
“No, this is perfect,” Shen Zhixi replied quietly, thinking to herself. Maybe it’s not a digestive disease. Could it be something else?
“Then eat more. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It’s usually the only proper meal I get. Work is too busy. Lunch is often just whatever I can grab.”
That was her, that Chi Lengzhao. Every day she went to the company and buried herself in reports and meetings, often so busy she didn’t even have time for lunch. Sometimes a piece of fruit and a slice of toast was all she ate for a meal.
But the original version of her, as described in the book, was nothing like this. It only briefly mentioned that she worked as a vice president at her father’s company. Beyond that, there were hardly any details.
The original Chi Lengzhao was idle and indulgent, spending her days partying and wasting time. She likely wasn’t nearly as busy and probably had the luxury of three well-balanced meals a day.
Shen Zhixi noticed that she had suddenly stopped talking mid-sentence and couldn’t help asking, “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” Chi Lengzhao looked up and smiled casually as she placed a fried egg in Shen Zhixi’s bowl. “Get some protein. It won’t make you gain weight.”
Shen Zhixi stared at the egg, her expression complicated, but she didn’t turn down the kind gesture from someone supposedly dealing with a serious illness.
She lowered her head and quietly ate the egg. After a pause, she asked, “We’ve been married for a few days now. I was in the hospital before, and now I’ve been discharged. Shouldn’t we visit our elders?”
Chi Lengzhao froze. She had completely forgotten. After all, she had no real experience with marriage and wasn’t familiar with these traditional customs.
She looked at Shen Zhixi with genuine appreciation. “You really think of everything. Since today’s Saturday, let’s visit my family first, then yours tomorrow. I’ll call my dad now to let him know.”
She pulled out her phone and began looking for her father’s number.
While Chi Lengzhao was on the phone, Shen Zhixi slipped back into her room and quietly called Xia Lian.
“Dr. Xia, I need a favor. Can you get access to Chi Lengzhao’s medical report?”
The car was driving along the famous coastal boulevard in Haibin City. Towering coconut trees lined the road, and the plants along the sidewalk were neatly trimmed. In the distance, the sea sparkled in the sunlight, looking like countless silver fish dancing across the waves.
In the back seat, Shen Zhixi leaned her head against the window, gazing outside.
Sea breeze flowed in through the half-open window, tossing her hair gently. A few loose strands brushed against Chi Lengzhao, who was resting with her eyes closed beside her.
Chi Lengzhao opened her eyes and happened to catch a glimpse of Shen Zhixi’s serene profile.
Her jawline was graceful and smooth, her skin fair and glowing like jade. Her eyes, deep and contemplative, seemed to hold swirling emotions, like the depths of the ocean.
Shen Zhixi was troubled.
Was she worried about Meixi, which was on the verge of collapse? Or was she regretting that she had married a dangerous, twisted person?
Chi Lengzhao closed her eyes again.
Thankfully, neither of those things would happen this time.
Because she was no longer the same Chi Lengzhao from the book.
She would save Meixi. She would protect Shen Zhixi. She would make sure she was safe and sound, and eventually hand her back to her childhood sweetheart.
Shen Zhixi’s phone vibrated. She turned her gaze away from the window and rolled it up.
Chi Lengzhao’s medical report had arrived.
The conclusion was clear. She was in perfect health. Not even nearsighted. The only issue noted was an unerupted wisdom tooth.
Shen Zhixi stared at the screen in silence.
She looked again at the name and the date. It was indeed Chi Lengzhao, and the date matched her recent hospital stay. No mistake.
She tilted her head slightly and caught a glimpse of the person beside her, still resting with her eyes closed.
The nose, the eyes, the brows—everything matched Chi Lengzhao.
She was healthy. She didn’t have a terminal illness. Then what was the misunderstanding?
Her phone vibrated again. It was another message from Xia Lian.
“Although her health is normal, considering the medication still in your system, if you’re planning to conceive, it’s best to wait at least one month.”
Shen Zhixi’s expression went blank.
Xia Lian added, “Chi Lengzhao probably understands this too. It’s the more responsible choice for both of you.”
Shen Zhixi froze for a second. Then suddenly, it all made sense.
So that’s why Chi Lengzhao went for a full physical exam.
Anger surged through her.
She wanted to have a child with her? No way.
One year agreement? Absolutely no touching? What a lie.
Chi Lengzhao, I almost fell for your trick again.
You really are a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
Shen Zhixi clenched her teeth so hard they clicked, barely holding back the urge to punch Chi Lengzhao right in the face.
