- Chapter 21 - A Soft Punch Is Still a Punch
In the vase by the window, pink and yellow lilies stood in full bloom. They were a specially bred variety with a light, elegant fragrance. Not overwhelming, just soft and refined, perfect for a bedroom.
Back at their villa, Chi Lengzhao went to the bedroom to change clothes. She dove headfirst into her closet, her hips sticking high in the air as she rummaged through it.
Shen Zhixi leaned against the doorway of the dressing room, arms crossed. Suddenly, she asked, “What did you mean by what you said earlier?”
“Which part?” Chi Lengzhao’s voice came from inside the closet.
“‘If you want to save Meixi, then act well.’ That part.”
“Oh, that,” Chi Lengzhao replied casually. “Didn’t we agree to play the perfect couple for a year? In front of your father-in-law, the great actress has to put on a convincing show, right?”
Shen Zhixi let out a cold snort and turned to leave. But just as she took a step, her arm was grabbed.
“What are you doing? Let go of me,” she frowned. “There’s no one here to put on a show for.”
Chi Lengzhao didn’t let go. She looked her in the eye and asked, “Shen Zhixi, can you trust me just once?”
Her eyes held a seriousness that Shen Zhixi had never seen before.
She was caught off guard. “What do you mean?”
Chi Lengzhao let go of her arm, walked over, and calmly closed the bedroom door. Then she sat on the sofa.
“I have something to tell you.”
Shen Zhixi sat down on the edge of the bed, keeping a safe distance.
The large room fell silent. It was just the two of them now.
Chi Lengzhao got straight to the point. “I know you married me to save Meixi. You were waiting on the Chi family to provide money for a bailout.”
Shen Zhixi hadn’t expected her to be so direct. She lowered her head and bit her lip, feeling embarrassed and a bit uncomfortable, but she couldn’t deny it. Because it was the truth.
“What I’m about to say, I hope you won’t tell anyone else.”
Shen Zhixi stayed quiet and listened.
“My dear father, your father-in-law Chi Jintang, has no intention of helping Meixi. He’s using our marriage to gain your family’s trust, then plans to seize Meixi for himself. If we want to save it, we’ll have to do it on our own. We can’t let him suspect anything. We need to act like a loving couple in front of him.”
Shen Zhixi was shocked.
But it wasn’t just the content of what she heard. She had been reborn and already knew the Chi family’s real plan to take over Meixi.
What truly shocked her was that the mastermind was Chi Jintang. And even more surprising, Chi Lengzhao had told her the truth.
She took a deep breath and asked, “Why are you telling me this?”
Chi Lengzhao smiled, calm and relaxed. “Wife, I told you. I will save Meixi.”
Shen Zhixi tried to ignore the discomfort that came with the word “wife.” In both this life and the one before, no one had ever called her that.
She looked directly at Chi Lengzhao, as if trying to see through her. “Chi Jintang is still your father.”
Chi Lengzhao shrugged. “Then he should treat me like his daughter first.”
She wasn’t the original Chi Lengzhao and felt no deep emotional bond toward Chi Jintang. Especially not toward a father who had never treated his daughter like family.
Shen Zhixi was startled again. A strange sense of unease crept into her heart, like something was off.
“I’m not a saint,” Chi Lengzhao said. “I just know that if someone is good to me, I’ll return the favor. If someone wrongs me, I’ll pay them back.”
She stood up, grabbed the loungewear she had picked earlier, and headed toward the door.
At the doorway, she paused. “Wife, to make our one-year agreement feel natural, I suggest you try looking at me with fresh eyes. It might make things easier for you.”
With that, she opened the door and walked out without looking back.
Shen Zhixi watched her straight, confident figure disappear down the hallway. A moment later, Chi Lengzhao’s voice rang out.
“Hua Zi, you ran the bath for me again? Thank you.”
Hua Zi responded with a smile, “You’re welcome, Miss Chi.”
In the quiet bedroom, Shen Zhixi lowered her gaze.
“Fresh eyes,” she whispered.
Later that evening, Chi Lengzhao came back from the guest room after a shower. She looked in high spirits, sitting on the sofa and fluffing her hair.
“Finally got to wash my hair. It feels so soft and clean.”
So that was it. Just washing her hair.
Shen Zhixi glanced at her. Chi Lengzhao pulled out her blanket and started making the bed. Her hair floated around as she moved. The scar on the back of her head was completely hidden under her dark hair now.
Hua Zi had done a good job trimming it.
“Hey, Zhixi. We’re visiting your family tomorrow, right? Is there anything I should watch out for? Should you tell me in advance?”
Chi Lengzhao lifted the blanket and lay down comfortably, only her head showing above the covers. Her eyes shone under the light.
There was no response for a while.
Just when Chi Lengzhao thought she would be ignored, a soft voice came from the bed.
“My parents are nice people. There’s nothing specific you need to worry about.”
Chi Lengzhao turned onto her side and smiled. At least she got a reply. That was a good start.
She turned off the light by the sofa. “Alright, then I won’t worry. I’m going to sleep. Good night.”
Shen Zhixi looked at her phone. It was 11:06 p.m.
This woman really did go to bed an hour early.
She turned off her light too. Soon, she could hear Chi Lengzhao’s soft and steady breathing.
Shen Zhixi stared into the dark.
She’s asleep already? That’s some incredible sleep quality.
Her mind drifted back to something Chi Lengzhao said earlier.
“Then he should treat me like his daughter first.”
It had been such a casual sentence, with no emotion.
And that was when Shen Zhixi finally realized what had been bothering her.
The Chi Lengzhao she knew used to treat her father’s words like gospel. If he scolded her, she would lock herself in her room for days. If he praised her, she would throw a party and buy everyone drinks.
Her greatest dream had always been to make her father proud and become someone the Chi family would respect.
This time, she had actually gone against her father.
What exactly had happened?
In the darkness, Shen Zhixi frowned deeply. Her heart was full of questions, and her doubts only grew stronger.
At six in the morning, Chi Lengzhao woke up naturally.
As usual, she got up, changed her clothes, and neatly folded the blanket, putting it back into the cabinet.
On her way past the bed, she noticed that most of Shen Zhixi’s blanket had slipped to the floor, revealing one pale, slender arm.
As her eyes moved upward, Chi Lengzhao suddenly froze.
Shen Zhixi’s nightgown was loose. One strap had slipped from her shoulder, revealing her flawless skin, elegant collarbones, and the soft curves of her chest like polished jade.
Her long black hair spread messily across the pillow. A few strands fell across her neck in a way that looked almost intentional, seductive against her pale skin.
She lay there lazily, peacefully, captivating and alluring.
Chi Lengzhao’s heart skipped a beat. She quickly turned her head away after just one glance.
Without thinking, she bent down to pick up the blanket and gently tossed it back onto the bed.
It was already October, and the cold weather had started to creep in. Sleeping half-exposed like this would only lead to catching a cold.
Out of good intention, Chi Lengzhao carefully lifted Shen Zhixi’s arm and pulled the blanket over her.
Just as the blanket was about to cover her completely, Shen Zhixi mumbled and slowly opened her eyes.
Chi Lengzhao froze on the spot.
At first, Shen Zhixi’s gaze was hazy and unfocused. But the moment she clearly saw who was standing over her, her eyes widened like a frightened deer.
“What are you doing?” Shen Zhixi snapped as she yanked the blanket up over herself.
Chi Lengzhao flinched and gave a sheepish smile, tilting her head with a somewhat guilty look.
In the dim room, the soft morning light filtered through the curtains.
The figure looming over her had an unclear expression, and that smile, under the shadows, looked especially suspicious.
Before Chi Lengzhao could even fully smile, Shen Zhixi burst out in anger.
“Pervert!”
Then came a loud thud. Chi Lengzhao felt a sharp blow to her nose.
Stars danced in front of her eyes.
“Ow…” she cried out, covering her face. Her eyes welled up with tears from the pain. “What are you doing? You nearly broke my nose!”
Shen Zhixi jumped out of bed and quickly pulled her strap back over her shoulder.
“Chi Lengzhao! We agreed you wouldn’t touch me. What are you trying to do?”
“I wasn’t doing anything. Your blanket had fallen off, and I was just picking it up for you,” Chi Lengzhao said, clearly wronged.
“You pervert! With that creepy smile! Picking up the blanket, huh? Then how do you explain pulling on my strap?”
“I didn’t pull it. You were asleep, and it slid off on its own.”
“Shameless!”
Chi Lengzhao knew there was no way to explain herself. Thanks to her original self’s reputation, in Shen Zhixi’s mind she was already a violent, manipulative, perverted, shameless alpha-type who would force herself on her wife at any moment.
Chi Lengzhao muttered under her breath, “I should’ve recorded a video with my phone.”
Her intention had been to prove her innocence by recording herself picking up the blanket.
But Shen Zhixi trembled with rage. She grabbed a pillow and threw it at her.
“You pervert! Disgusting! You wanted to film it too?”
Chi Lengzhao caught the pillow and placed it back on the bed.
“Okay, I’m leaving. Maybe you should get more sleep.”
“Get out!”
Chi Lengzhao hurriedly opened the door and slipped out. As the door closed behind her, Shen Zhixi collapsed against the wall, all strength drained from her body.
How was she supposed to survive this?
Just thinking about having to live with such a shameless demon for a whole year made her hug her knees, bury her face, and feel tears sting her eyes.
“Miss Chi, are you alright?”
Hua Zi came up the stairs carrying cotton balls and gauze. She hadn’t expected to see Miss Chi dashing out of the bedroom with a bleeding nose.
“Miss Chi, what happened to your nose? Why are you bleeding?”
“I’m bleeding?” Chi Lengzhao was startled. She wiped under her nose and saw it was sticky with bl00d.
She really was bleeding.
“Must be the dry weather. I didn’t even notice,” she said awkwardly. “Hua Zi, please bring me some gauze and cotton. Don’t tell Housekeeper Zhou, or she’ll drag me to the hospital again.”
Thankfully, the bleeding wasn’t too bad. Shen Zhixi hadn’t hit her with full force, probably because she had just woken up and didn’t use much strength.
Chi Lengzhao stuffed cotton and gauze up her nose until the bleeding stopped.
But now she couldn’t go running on the treadmill as usual. Holding a cup of hot water, she plopped into a chair in the study.
She let out a long sigh.
The master bedroom was a dangerous place.
She had finally realized that nowhere in this house was as safe as her own study.
