- Chapter 22 - A Misunderstanding About Chi Lengzhao
The master bedroom door opened. Shen Zhixi, dressed in a flowing white dress, sat at the vanity applying her skincare. She had already gotten up and finished washing.
Hua Zi came in to tidy the bed. When she noticed red and yellow stains on the blanket, she softly said, “Miss, there’s pollen on the blanket. I’ll replace it with a fresh one.”
Shen Zhixi paused mid-motion. “Pollen?”
Hua Zi explained, “Yesterday Fangfang and I came in to air out the room and change the flowers. The florist brought lilies. I accidentally dropped two on the floor, and some pollen spilled onto the carpet.”
“Lily pollen is really hard to clean.”
“We were scrubbing the carpet for a long time, but I guess we missed a spot. The blanket must have fallen off the bed last night and picked up the pollen.”
Shen Zhixi blinked, then walked over and lifted the edge of the blanket.
Sure enough, there were yellow and pink powdery stains on it.
Her expression turned thoughtful. So, the blanket really had fallen on the floor. Chi Lengzhao had been telling the truth. She really was just helping pick it up.
“Where is she now?”
“Miss Chi?” Hua Zi had almost gotten used to her lady asking about Chi Lengzhao first thing every morning.
“She had a nosebleed. She didn’t go exercise this morning and went to the study instead.”
“She had a nosebleed?” Shen Zhixi already knew why, but still asked.
“Yes, she said it was from the dry weather. She’s used cotton and gauze to stop the bleeding. Should I ask the kitchen to make her some snow pear soup with rock sugar to help cool her down?”
Shen Zhixi nodded. “Tell Housekeeper Zhou.”
“Alright, Miss,” Hua Zi said as she started changing the bedding, humming a little tune as she worked.
The car pulled into the Shen family’s garden.
As usual, Xiao Song opened the car door for Miss Shen first, then walked around to open the door for the young madam.
After the punch that morning, Chi Lengzhao was still feeling nervous. She didn’t dare sneak another glance at her wife’s stunning face. She walked ahead properly, keeping her eyes forward.
But just then, a soft hand gently slipped into the crook of her arm.
Chi Lengzhao stiffened. Her heart skipped a beat as she turned her head, surprised.
“Relax. Act natural. Didn’t you say we need to play our roles as a loving couple?” Shen Zhixi’s cheeks were red, but she kept her tone steady.
Madam Shen saw her daughter walking in with a shy smile, her arm linked with Chi Lengzhao’s, who leaned in to speak gently beside her. The two of them looked elegant and well-matched, like a truly happy newlywed couple.
Seeing this, Madam Shen felt both comforted and joyful. It seemed her daughter was content with the marriage after all.
Shen Jichang had heard of Chi Lengzhao’s reputation. Spoiled, uneducated, constantly hanging around in nightclubs, changing girlfriends like outfits, and clueless about business. If it hadn’t been for Chi Jintang’s sincerity and Shen Zhixi’s insistence that Chi Lengzhao wasn’t as bad as the rumors, he would have rather sold Meixi than allowed this marriage.
But during the meal, he noticed that Chi Lengzhao had a sharp mind. Whether it was business strategy, investment directions, or corporate management, she spoke with clarity and precision. She didn’t sound like a troublemaker at all. She spoke more like a seasoned CEO.
After the meal, the two of them continued chatting for over an hour.
Shen Jichang couldn’t help but be impressed. If Chi Lengzhao and Zhixi truly got along, he could see himself trusting Meixi to her in the future.
Afterwards, Madam Shen gently pulled her daughter aside.
“Is Xiaozhao good to you?”
Shen Zhixi blushed and nodded. “Yes. She always gives in to me.”
That wasn’t a lie. Chi Lengzhao had given her the bedroom while staying in the study herself, given her the bed and slept on the sofa, and even after getting punched and bleeding, hadn’t raised her voice or gotten angry.
“As long as you two get along, that’s what matters. Once Meixi is stable, your father can finally relax. Then you two can have a couple of adorable babies and bring them home to visit.”
Shen Zhixi turned even redder and ducked her head. She leaned into her mother’s arms, pouting playfully.
“Mom, do I have to have kids just to come home and visit?”
Madam Shen laughed and patted her back. “Silly girl, you’ll always be my daughter. No matter how old you are, you’ll always be welcome at home.”
Shen Zhixi didn’t speak. She stayed in her mother’s arms, her eyes slightly red.
Madam Shen turned to Chi Lengzhao. “Xiaozhao, this is probably your first time here. There’s a wetland park to the south and a shopping street to the east. Why don’t you two go have some fun? See a movie, walk around a bit, then come back for dinner.”
Shen Jichang looked at her kindly, and Chi Lengzhao couldn’t refuse. She nodded in agreement.
Shen Zhixi took her hand. “Mom, Dad, we’ll go for a walk and be back in time for dinner.”
It was a crisp autumn day, and since it was the weekend, the park was full of people.
Some were setting up tents, others were riding bikes, chatting, laughing, or chasing after children.
The park was filled with water features. Reeds and cattails swayed on the surface. Pennywort grew in patches along the shore.
Willow branches swayed in the breeze. The atmosphere was perfect for a relaxed stroll with someone you liked.
Maybe it was their aura, especially Shen Zhixi’s natural star quality, that drew attention. As they walked, many people turned to look at them.
Fortunately, Shen Zhixi wore sunglasses, hiding most of her face. Only a small part was visible, not enough to be recognized.
“About this morning… I’m sorry,” Shen Zhixi said softly, guilt in her voice. “I found out later you were just trying to pick up the blanket for me.”
Her voice faded at the end, almost too quiet to hear.
Chi Lengzhao was surprised she would bring it up and even more surprised that she would clear her name so soon. She kicked a small stone gently as they walked.
The pebble rolled forward a few feet before stopping.
“How did you figure it out?”
“I saw the pollen on the blanket. Hua Zi said they dropped some yesterday when arranging the flowers.”
So it was the physical evidence that convinced her, not trust.
Chi Lengzhao walked up to the pebble again and gave it another kick.
She sighed, her tone a little disappointed. She gave a half-hearted smile.
“I guess I should thank the pollen then.”
Shen Zhixi thought back to what Chi Lengzhao had said yesterday: “Try looking at me with a new perspective.” She clearly hadn’t followed that advice. Maybe she’d been too startled, or maybe the memories of her past life were still too painful.
“That smile you gave this morning,” Shen Zhixi muttered, “it was a little creepy.”
“What smile?” Chi Lengzhao blinked. In her original world, people described her smile as elegant, warm, radiant, or cute. At worst, they’d say it was silly.
No one had ever called her creepy before.
“That one, when you were leaning over me. I opened my eyes, and you were right there.”
Chi Lengzhao thought for a moment, then corrected seriously, “I was trying to be nice, not creepy.”
“Nice?” Shen Zhixi paused, surprised and a little confused. Why would Chi Lengzhao try to be nice to her?
Of course, Chi Lengzhao couldn’t say the real reason: because Shen Zhixi was the heroine, and she herself was just a background character—one who, in the story, had done so many terrible things that she eventually ended up with her glands removed. If she wanted any chance of surviving, she had to be on Shen Zhixi’s good side. Maybe, if she was lucky, she’d be shown some mercy.
Chi Lengzhao kicked the small pebble again. It rolled ahead, bouncing lightly, almost like a tiny guide showing them the way forward.
Just as she was about to kick it again, a small white leather boot lightly tapped it first. The pebble rolled ahead again with a cheerful spin.
Chi Lengzhao looked at Shen Zhixi. Her eyes held a playful warmth, her smile soft.
“So, does my smile still look creepy now?” Chi Lengzhao asked, teasing.
Shen Zhixi pressed her lips together to hold back a laugh. “No, now it looks cute.”
“So you mean childish,” Chi Lengzhao joked without offense. She quickened her steps, chasing after the pebble. “When I was a kid, I used to kick pebbles while walking home from school. Walking alone felt boring, but playing with a pebble made it fun. It felt like I had a little game going, and before I knew it, I’d be home.”
Shen Zhixi hadn’t expected that kind of memory from her. She blurted out, “Didn’t the driver pick you up?”
“There was no driver. My mom…” Chi Lengzhao stopped mid-sentence, suddenly realizing she had said too much.
She was supposed to be the Chi Lengzhao from the novel—born into a wealthy family, raised in luxury. Of course she would have had a driver picking her up.
She quickly looked toward the east side of the park, pretending to get distracted by the tall office buildings across the street.
“I’m going to check what movies are playing today.”
Shen Zhixi noticed the sudden change in topic and asked, “Are you really planning to watch a movie?”
“Of course. Your dad gave us an assignment, and I always complete my tasks properly.”
At the theater, a variety of films were showing: comedies, fantasy dramas, thrillers, romance films, and imported action movies.
“What do you want to watch?” Chi Lengzhao asked. “Just don’t pick a thriller. Anything but something too brainy.”
“Why? You don’t like them?” Shen Zhixi smiled.
“I already have enough on my mind. If I try to watch something that twists my brain too, I’m afraid it’ll overload and crash.”
Shen Zhixi chuckled. “Then let’s watch this one. A fantasy costume drama. Zhao Siyi is the lead. She’s really popular right now.”
So, her wife was a fan.
Chi Lengzhao looked at the poster. The actress wore elegant blue robes and had stunning features. No wonder she had so many fans.
A small crowd was already gathered around the poster, excitedly calling out “Siyi” and “Yiyi.” Clearly, Zhao Siyi had a lot of admirers.
Chi Lengzhao leaned closer and whispered, “I think you’re more beautiful. Rong Yin was even more breathtaking.”
Shen Zhixi’s face turned bright red. Her blush spread quickly, but Chi Lengzhao had already turned away and was buying tickets.
“This one. Two seats,” she said to the cashier.
Inside the cinema, most of the audience was made up of couples. Some were Beta-Beta pairs, others were Alpha-Omega couples curled up together in the dark, whispering, kissing.
Someone whispered from behind, “Don’t release your pheromones here.”
“Of course not, baby. My scent is just for you.”
Shen Zhixi frowned. She had just detected four distinct pheromones. Two were from Omegas and didn’t affect her. The other two were from Alphas, but they were low-level. As an S-rank Omega, they didn’t affect her at all.
Still, she turned to look at Chi Lengzhao. In the past, this flirtatious woman would light up with interest the moment she caught an Omega’s scent—just like a hunter catching the scent of prey. If she found the person attractive, she’d start chasing immediately.
Shen Zhixi wanted to pull her away. She didn’t want to see two Alphas fighting over one Omega in a public theater.
Even if Chi Lengzhao wouldn’t feel awkward, she would.
But to her surprise, Chi Lengzhao had no reaction. She even glanced at the couple and whispered with a grin, “They think no one can see in the dark. Don’t they know the projectionist in the back sees everything?”
They found their seats, and Chi Lengzhao sat right next to her.
“If this makes you uncomfortable, we can leave,” Shen Zhixi said, testing the waters.
“No. I’m fine. It’s not bothering me,” Chi Lengzhao replied calmly. Her expression was relaxed, and her voice was steady.
A moment later, she asked, “The air conditioning is pretty strong. Are you cold?”
Without waiting for a reply, she took off her jacket and draped it over Shen Zhixi’s shoulders.
“Don’t catch a cold,” she said gently.
“Thanks.”
Shen Zhixi really was a little cold. She was wearing a sleeveless dress that reached just past her knees. While the walk in the park had been fine, sitting in the cold theater now, the chill had set in.
The jacket was warm and clean. It still carried body heat but had no noticeable scent.
She remembered how Chi Lengzhao used to smoke. Her clothes always smelled like tobacco. Shen Zhixi didn’t smoke and had always been sensitive to that smell.
At first, she didn’t think much of the jacket, but soon she realized something was off. It was too clean. Not just no smoke, there wasn’t even a trace of pheromones.
Not even the usual faint scent of mint.
She glanced sideways. Chi Lengzhao was fully focused on the screen, her eyes fixed, completely drawn into the movie.
Shen Zhixi blinked and quietly pulled the jacket tighter around her.
Maybe she was just overthinking it. Maybe Chi Lengzhao had just become neater and cleaner after marriage.
Maybe this coat was new. Maybe she hadn’t worn it long enough for her scent to soak in.
