- Chapter 4 - Shen Zhixi’s Tears
Chi Lengzhao lay back on her hospital bed again, her mind restless and unsettled.
She had become a cannon-fodder scumbag Alpha. Her wife wanted a divorce. That same wife would one day be the one to have her scent gland removed. Her stepmother and that spoiled younger brother would later team up to kick her out of the family. Her old friends would turn on her, and she’d end up homeless, caught in storms and despair. If things went downhill fast enough, she might even activate some tragic side story and jump off a bridge…
The more Chi Lengzhao thought about it, the more hopeless it felt.
She sighed, tossing and turning while trying to recall the events of the novel. But she’d lost too much bl00d—before long, she fell asleep.
When she woke again, the sky had darkened. The setting sun cast a soft golden hue over the hospital room, wrapping everything in a warm glow.
Chi Lengzhao sat up and stared blankly at the sunset.
“Miss, you’re awake. Would you like something to drink? Madam just sent over some bird’s nest porridge for you.”
Chi Lengzhao nodded absentmindedly. “Just give me a glass of juice.”
Housekeeper Zhou poured her a glass of orange juice.
The slightly sour liquid slid down her throat and into her chest. It left her mouth dry—and her heart even drier.
Why was Housekeeper Zhou still here? Why was she still in this hospital room? Why was she still the cannon-fodder Alpha?
If only all of this were just a dream…
“Take the porridge to the young madam instead.”
“What about you, Miss?” Housekeeper Zhou hesitated. The young miss had been surprisingly kind—she’d gone to visit the young madam right after waking up, and now she was giving up her nourishing bird’s nest porridge too. As far as she could remember, the miss had never been this thoughtful to anyone. But she was still injured, had lost so much bl00d—she needed nourishment more than anyone.
“Go on. Give it to her,” Chi Lengzhao said.
What she was really thinking was: Even if my stepmother can’t stand me—always treating me like I’m a threat to her son’s inheritance—she never slips up in public. This porridge was her way of sucking up in front of Dad. It’s safe.
Housekeeper Zhou nodded. “Then what would you like to eat? I’ll ask Uncle Nian to cook something.”
“No need to go through the trouble. I’ll just order delivery.” Chi Lengzhao held up her phone and, after saying that, actually started placing an order.
The original version of her had ordered takeout before, so there was a history to scroll through—Chinese, Western, Japanese, Korean; spicy and non-spicy, everything was there.
Chi Lengzhao went ahead and ordered herself a feast, and even threw in three cups of milk tea—for herself, Housekeeper Zhou, and her soon-to-be-ex-wife. One for each of them.
As Housekeeper Zhou headed out with the porridge, she paused and said, “Miss, just now, Madam Shen came to see you.”
Madam Shen? That would be Shen Zhixi’s mother—her mother-in-law.
“What did she say?” Chi Lengzhao asked quickly.
“Not much. She saw you were asleep, asked about your condition, then left. She’s probably in the young madam’s room now.”
Chi Lengzhao didn’t waste a second. Seeing an opportunity to earn Shen Zhixi’s favor, she snatched the thermos flask from Housekeeper Zhou’s hands.
“I’ll take it to her.”
Be good to Shen Zhixi now, and maybe—just maybe—she’ll spare me later. Maybe she won’t cut out my scent gland. And if I get kicked out by the Chi family someday, maybe I can still rely on her and not end up on the streets.
After all, she’s the main character—the destined CEO who’ll rebuild Meixi into a powerhouse.
Getting on her good side? That’s always a smart move.
In the hospital room, Madam Shen was holding her daughter’s hand.
“Xixi, what on earth happened last night? It was your wedding night, and yet Xiao Zhao ended up with a bloody gash on the back of her head? They even had to call an ambulance?”
Shen Zhixi kept her head down, silent.
“You child… I went to check on her earlier. She was still asleep, bandages wrapped around her head. The wound looked serious.”
Shen Zhixi gave a cold hum of acknowledgment but still didn’t speak.
Madam Shen grew more worried. Something felt off. “What happened between you two? I thought things were going well before. Did she… did she try to—?”
Shen Zhixi’s face froze. Her cheeks flushed red with shame and anger. A rush of humiliation surged through her, and she nearly blurted it out—Chi Lengzhao is a monster! She tried to forcibly mark me!
Just then, the door burst open with a bang. Chi Lengzhao entered with the thermos in her arms, smiling warmly.
“Mom, you’re here! Visiting Xixi?”
She even gave Shen Zhixi a new nickname—Xixi.
It sounded affectionate, the kind of pet name shared between lovers.
Madam Shen looked up and smiled when she saw her “daughter-in-law.”
“We just came to check on both of you. Xiao Zhao, how’s your head? It was your wedding day, did Xixi lose her temper with you?”
“No, it was just a small accident,” Chi Lengzhao said with a calm, natural smile as she began to portion out the bird’s nest porridge.
In her original world, she’d handled all kinds of social events and negotiations. Right now, she simply treated Madam Shen like a high-priority VIP client she needed to win over.
“Mom, don’t worry. I just bumped the back of my head. It’s nothing serious.”
“How did that happen?” Madam Shen asked with concern.
“I drank too much. Being able to marry Xixi—it’s the biggest blessing I’ve had in several lifetimes. I was too happy and had a bit too much to drink. When I was taking off my wedding dress, I tripped and hit the table.”
Shen Zhixi’s lips twitched, but she didn’t call her out on the lie.
Madam Shen nodded, paused, then added in a knowing tone, “Newlyweds or not, and no matter how young you two are, you still need to take things slow. There’s a whole life ahead of you. You can think about having a little Alpha or Omega later.”
Her daughter had been rushed to the hospital after her pheromones went out of control. With no Alpha to mark her, she’d had to use an emergency suppressant. Meanwhile, her legal Alpha wife had been knocked out cold on their wedding night—naturally, there was no chance for a proper marking.
Madam Shen gave her daughter a sidelong glance. Seeing her daughter’s flushed face and awkward expression, she finally understood why she’d been so tight-lipped earlier.
Chi Lengzhao divided the porridge into two small bowls. She handed one to Madam Shen with a respectful smile. “Mom, I’m sorry you had to come all the way here and worry about us. Please have some too.”
Madam Shen accepted it with a smile.
Chi Lengzhao placed the other bowl on the bedside table and reached out to help Shen Zhixi sit up.
But the moment Shen Zhixi saw her hand coming, she jerked away as if from a venomous snake. Her glare was full of loathing. “I can do it myself!”
Chi Lengzhao smiled awkwardly and played it off. “Mom, look at Xixi—she’s already trying to act tough.”
Once Shen Zhixi was sitting up, Chi Lengzhao offered her the bowl of porridge. “Xixi, you must be hungry.”
With her mother beside her, Shen Zhixi suppressed the revulsion rising in her chest. She forced herself to take the bowl, but the moment her fingers brushed against the back of Chi Lengzhao’s hand, she recoiled like she’d been burned. Even that brief contact left her skin crawling.
Chi Lengzhao had never been so openly hated before. Her brows tensed slightly as she lowered her voice. “I’m not a monster, you don’t have to treat me like one.”
Shen Zhixi shot her a glare, also whispering, “No, you’re worse—you’re a monster pretending to be human.”
Chi Lengzhao: “…”
Madam Shen, noticing the hushed exchange, glanced over the rim of her bowl. In her eyes, it just looked like a little lovers’ quarrel—her daughter rolling her eyes, while Chi Lengzhao remained calm and considerate, giving in to her at every turn.
She hadn’t interacted much with Chi Lengzhao before, but from what she’d heard, the girl had a terrible temper—moody, spoiled, hard to get along with.
But now, seeing her behave with grace, politeness, and willingness to accommodate her daughter, Madam Shen felt surprisingly reassured. She was starting to like her new “daughter-in-law.”
After they finished the porridge and Chi Lengzhao stepped out of the room, Madam Shen held her daughter’s hand.
“Xixi, I can see that Xiao Zhao genuinely treats you well. You should try to get along with her. Marriage is different from living at home. You can’t just shut people out over every little thing.”
Shen Zhixi’s brows furrowed. She was just about to say, Mom, Chi Lengzhao isn’t who you think she is. Everything you see is just an act. Underneath it all, she’s a disgusting, manipulative monster. I only married her because I was foolish enough to fall for her lies.
The words “I want a divorce” were already pushing up her throat.
But Madam Shen sighed. “Your father’s been so stressed lately. You know how things are with Meixi. To be honest, I didn’t even want this marriage alliance with the Chi family. I was afraid you’d be mistreated. But now that I’ve seen how Xiao Zhao treats you, I feel more at ease.”
Shen Zhixi glanced at the silver strands peeking out from her mother’s freshly dyed black hair. They pierced her heart.
She closed her eyes and answered with a silent nod.
Just yesterday, she had married Chi Lengzhao in a grand, extravagant wedding. Everyone of influence in Seaside City had been there. The media had splashed their wedding across headlines, and “The Wedding of Seaside’s #1 Omega” had topped the trending charts.
If news of a divorce broke on the very next day, both families would be the laughingstock of the entire city—maybe even the whole country. The Chi family would be furious, and she didn’t know how far they’d go to retaliate.
But what she feared most… was that her father, already frail, might not survive the shock.
This marriage wasn’t something she could just walk away from.
Her chest tightened. Her eyes burned. She bit down hard on her lower lip, doing everything she could to hold back the tears.
Madam Shen gently patted her daughter’s back. “Xiao Zhao treats you well, and the Chi family is willing to help. Meixi will recover soon, and your father will finally be able to breathe a little easier.”
This time, Shen Zhixi couldn’t hold back her tears. “Mom… don’t worry. Even if the Chi family doesn’t help, I’ll support Dad and carry Meixi forward.”
“You silly child, it’s not that simple,” Madam Shen sighed. “When times are good, everyone wants to be your friend. But when trouble comes… you’ll be lucky if they don’t kick you while you’re down. People only care about their own problems. You’re an Omega—don’t push yourself so hard. Just live peacefully as Xiao Zhao’s wife. Leave Meixi to your father.”
Madam Shen’s values were still quite traditional. In her mind, an Omega needed someone dependable to lean on—someone to build a secure life with.
“Mm…” Shen Zhixi’s eyes were red as she threw herself into her mother’s arms.
The tears she’d been holding back—tears of regret, of pain, of humiliation—finally spilled over. They streamed down her cheeks, not just for her parents, but for herself.
Outside the door, Chi Lengzhao stood silently, holding two cups of hot milk tea. She had seen it all.
Her hand, resting on the doorknob, slowly fell away. She turned around, footsteps light, and quietly walked away without a word.
Night had fallen. The last golden rays of sunset were fading. The final streak of dusk was about to vanish into the horizon.
Chi Lengzhao leaned against the rooftop railing, staring at the sky still tinged with evening light. Suddenly, she shouted toward the horizon—
“Mom! I miss you so much! Are you doing okay up there? I’m doing well, really! Don’t worry about me!”
Bathed in the glow of the setting sun, Chi Lengzhao gazed toward the heavens. Tears shimmered on her face.
And yet… within that shimmer was a smile, sweet, pure, and bright like a child’s.
No one in this world knew: her mother had died of illness when she was still a child.
At just nine years old, she had lost her mother and with her, the warmth of a mother’s embrace.
