- Chapter 7 - The Secret Compartment in the Basement
Chi Lengzhao slept straight through until morning. When she opened her eyes, the first thing she saw was the corner of a white lab coat.
Someone was adjusting the IV needle in the back of her hand. It must have been time for another drip.
“Thank you,” she said gently.
The young nurse, an Omega, blushed instantly. It wasn’t every day a beautiful Alpha spoke so softly and politely. “Y-you’re welcome,” she stammered.
Standing nearby, Dr. Xia gave her a cold glance before rudely lifting Chi Lengzhao’s eyelid for a quick check. A smirk played at the corner of his lips.
“Chi Lengzhao, so you actually know how to say thank you?”
Chi Lengzhao didn’t seem bothered. “I know how to say a lot of things. You’ve just never asked.”
She sat up and asked, “Doctor, when can I be discharged?”
Dr. Xia slid his hands into his coat pockets, keeping his face stiff. “If everything’s fine, you can leave in three days after we remove the bandages.”
“Then I’ll be counting on you to take good care of me during these three days, Doctor Xia.”
His eyebrows twitched, lips parting like he wanted to say something, but in the end, he only muttered, “Get some rest,” and walked out.
Chi Lengzhao began to eat breakfast, which had been prepared by Uncle Nian back at the house and delivered by Driver Xiao Song.
There was minced chicken porridge, warm milk, toasted baguette, bacon rolls, vegetable salad, and a fruit platter.
While sipping her milk and chewing on a piece of toast, Chi Lengzhao asked, “Has the young madam had breakfast?”
Housekeeper Zhou replied, “I just saw Hua Zi heading downstairs to buy something.”
Chi Lengzhao paused, frowning. “Take this to the young madam. From now on, whatever I eat, she eats. We must not slight her in the slightest.”
“Yes, Miss.”
Upstairs, Hua Zi was helping Shen Zhixi sit up and had just laid out the plain porridge, boiled eggs, and soup dumplings she’d bought, when Housekeeper Zhou knocked and entered the room.
“Young Madam, the Miss asked for this breakfast to be delivered to you.”
She then cleared away the simple breakfast and replaced it with the luxurious Chi family spread.
Shen Zhixi frowned. “What’s the meaning of this?”
Housekeeper Zhou replied respectfully, “Miss said that from now on, whatever she eats, you eat. You are not to be treated with any less care.”
Hua Zi beamed. “Miss Chi is really considerate. She’s so thoughtful.”
Shen Zhixi gave a faint “Hmm” in reply. Her eyes remained cold, and deep down, she scoffed. Chi Lengzhao was always good at appearances.
Back in her room, Chi Lengzhao casually picked up one of the soup dumplings Housekeeper Zhou had just retrieved and took a bite.
Honestly, it had been a long time since she’d eaten anything this “canteen-level.” But it was tasty. Surprisingly so.
After breakfast, she forced herself to finish a small IV bag, then changed out of the hospital gown into a hoodie. She pulled the hood up to cover her bandaged head. Once the nurses at the station were busy with other patients, she slipped out and took the elevator down.
Driver Xiao Song was already waiting in the parking garage. As soon as he saw her, he opened the door and drove her straight back to the villa.
Inside, Fangfang, a young Beta like Hua Zi and Housekeeper Zhou, was cleaning. When she saw the young miss walk in unexpectedly, she jumped in surprise.
“M-Miss…”
“You can carry on. Don’t mind me,” Chi Lengzhao said.
Fangfang let out a silent sigh of relief. She hadn’t worked here long—just over a month. When she arrived, Housekeeper Zhou was busy preparing for the wedding between Miss Chi and Miss Shen, so smaller tasks like serving tea were often left to her.
One night, Miss Chi came home from a bar in the middle of the night demanding alcohol. Housekeeper Zhou wasn’t around, so Fangfang had to bring it up herself. As she climbed the stairs with a tray of bottles, she heard strange sounds from the bedroom—breathy, suggestive sounds.
Through the slightly ajar door, she saw Miss Chi pressing a young woman down on the bed, kissing her.
Fangfang nearly dropped the tray. Her face turned beet red as she fled back downstairs, hiding in the kitchen, heart racing.
That messy, indecent scene was burned into her memory.
She had heard the bride was someone from the powerful Shen family. Even Driver Xiao Song and Housekeeper Zhou had mentioned that Miss Chi seemed serious about the Shen family’s daughter.
Fangfang had been confused. If she truly cared, and they were about to get married, why was she still bringing other women home?
Later, Miss Chi brought back different women every few days. All of them were young and beautiful.
By then, Fangfang had completely seen through her.
Miss Chi was, without a doubt, a heartless player.
The Secret Compartment in the Basement
Chi Lengzhao remembered that the book had once mentioned a hidden compartment located in the basement.
She went straight there.
The door was locked.
She had no idea where the key might be. And she couldn’t exactly ask Housekeeper Zhou—doing so would only raise suspicion. The original owner had clearly intended this place to be a private space. If the key was hidden, she likely didn’t tell many people where it was. Even Housekeeper Zhou might not know.
Thankfully, the fingerprint scanner still worked.
With a beep, the basement door unlocked.
Chi Lengzhao stood at the entrance and pressed the switch on the wall. The lights came on, casting a dim glow over the staircase that led down.
It looked like a storage room. The space was cramped. She took a breath, crouched slightly, and headed down the stairs.
The room was indeed a storage area. One wall held a shelving unit filled with children’s items—stuffed toys, a small stool, coloring books, and photo albums.
Strangely, there was also a table and a chair. A small desk lamp sat on the tabletop.
Chi Lengzhao pressed the switch.
To her surprise, the lamp turned on. A warm yellow light spilled over the patterned white tablecloth.
She brushed her fingers across it. The soft and smooth texture told her it was a high-end fabric.
The novel had said the original Chi Lengzhao would often come to this basement and sit quietly in front of a brocade box taken from the hidden compartment—sometimes for hours.
Chi Lengzhao didn’t know why the original had done that. She wasn’t her, after all. But one thing was certain—this basement held her secrets.
She searched the room thoroughly but couldn’t find the hidden compartment. She checked up and down, front and back, without success.
Her head injury started to make her dizzy. The air down here was stuffy. After a while, she slumped into the chair, catching her breath.
Her gaze suddenly landed on a photo hanging on the wall. It was of a young girl, around ten years old, smiling brightly while holding a trophy.
Chi Lengzhao stared at it for a few seconds, then stood up and gently rubbed her fingers around the edges of the frame. It had clearly been tampered with. Even though it had been carefully redone, she could tell this wasn’t the original photo. The one that used to hang here had been slightly larger.
She tried to peel the photo off, but it had been glued down. Instead, she ran her fingers along the edges again, feeling for anything unusual.
This time, she noticed something. The wall behind the photo felt different. The texture stood out from the surrounding surface.
Leaning in closer, she examined the area carefully, hoping to find a bump, a dip, a button—something. But there was nothing. The wall was completely smooth.
She let out a frustrated sigh. Maybe she should just smash the wall open.
As she thought this, her finger accidentally pressed hard against the wall.
There was a dull click, like a spring releasing.
A small panel popped out of the wall.
Chi Lengzhao’s heart leapt. She leaned in, eyes wide with excitement.
Sure enough, a delicate brocade box slowly slid out from within the wall.
She picked it up and gently placed it on the desk.
Her heartbeat quickened. She was both thrilled and nervous.
Was this really it? Could it be the sapphire necklace Shen Zhixi had asked for by name? And what kind of necklace would make her care so much?
With her fingers resting on the clasp, she gave it a soft push.
The box opened.
Her eyes lit up at once. Under the lamp’s glow, a dazzling light reflected into her vision.
Brilliant, radiant and yet also deep and silent. It was the kind of beauty only time could create.
The sapphire necklace was really inside.
